We identified our prime target for that position (again), who was not for sale and had two years left on his contract we demonstrated our desire to the player, and got our man.
He is to fill a position that has been a big problem to us for years and years, and comes with good reports, he is a good pro and stays out of the red-tops, which to some makes him a bore , probably the same ones that think Andy Carroll is a risk, he knows this league and has progressed at Villa.
We are not in Europe so our pulling power is weak as far as alternatives go, he actually wanted to come to us , he is not going to get homesick in two years and fuck off to Spain, Italy, Argentina etc we paid a premium, and people have looked at the logic of the situation and might have warmed to the idea..................so what?

A couple of years ago we identified Barry as the one player to sort us out. We persued him but at 15m we crumbled, and ruined it and fucked up Alonso, Villa, Barry and ourselves into the bargain. Theres certainly a steel in these owners that we havnt seen in a long time.

Still not sure about this, Henderson + Downing = Aguero?
Let's hope it works but everytime we bought players to do a job in the last 7yrs, it hasn't really moved the team onto a new level.
Yes, but then Aguero gets homesick for somewhere warm and the Maradona's , and Diego starts putting his oar in to things and stirring it up no thanks, I see the logic in what we are doing.
So based on failing in the past , we should not do it again in the future, could it not be who was involved had the wrong ideas and the wrong players and or ran short of money and had to dilute those plans.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes. Not convinced he's worth anywhere near the fee being paid, but it's obvious he's better than anything we have.

Good luck Mr Downing.

are we really ? i'm not saying they know everything going on or get everything right but the two journos i pay attention to , barrett and smith , don't seem to think we're interested . And the players were are signing now have been linked to us for months , mata hasn't bar online .
Hope we do get him though .

IF we do get mata , where would all these guys play ? already i am a bit lost at what formation we are going to play .

Reading through this thread there are a few things that really gets on my nerves. We are not buying Henderson, Adam and Downing to accomodate Andy Carroll.
What is the Kings philosophy? Pass and move. What do the three new lads have in common? They're all excellent passers of the ball.
In other words we're adding more players to the squad tht can enhance the basic philosophy. But they also bring something different on an individual level. Henderson with enthusiasm, energy, creativity, possible wingplay and being one for the future, Adam with pinpoint accuracy from set pieces and excellent passing range, creativity and the ability to change play from one side to another and Downing with proper wing play, width, crossing ability, pace and give the team more balance.

The sum of all this will parts make us a better team regarding pass and move, but will also give us more strings to play on. Teams will find it harder to play against us as we'll plenty of more options. And that is the key here. Forget about the names of the players, that doesnt matter. Its what they bring to the team collectivly and individually.

Andy Carroll will enjoy the lads crossing ability, but Suarez and Gerrard will get as much out of their ability to spot a pass or keep the ball on the ground. In other words we can score goals from all over the pitch and have signed players that will add to the total goal tally.

Try looking at the bigger picture. Its starting to look pretty fricking good.
I think it's pretty clear that we're building the team around Andy Carroll. It's a risky strategy, given that Andy Carroll has yet to prove that he's actually good enough to be here.

That said, and as dismayed as I am with the prices we've paid for either unproven, or underwhelming footballers, I'm still quite excited to see how Kenny brings them all together.

Although I'm definitely hoping we'll pull a rabbit out of a hat before the transfer window closes.

Well exactly he wouldn't at the moment, and in fairness to Rubans it was just by way of a comparison, he will command CL, and when he does go will it be for £36m (if £20m is the actual price)

We was The Club

It's clear the club has a plan and at least they are following the conviction, I don't think any of them are bad players and but guess I just wonder if money is spent elsewhere and it's a decent point about whether Aguero would come here, since he spoked glwoingly about us before he went to Athletico, it might true that he still might hold the same feelings.
I know the club has a plan, but just hope it doesn't have tunnel vision. We shall find out at the end of the season.

and this is the bigger picture that a lot of people are missing Andy.

If we try and compete with Chelsea, City and to a lesser exten United on who can sign the best stellar players we will fail, firstly because they won't come, as we don't have CL, secondly we would get outbid by the two aforementioned or the Spanish clubs.
We can't compete punch for punch for top players at the moment (thank Christ we got Suarez).
We have seen City come from zero to challengers in a very short time, and we have seen Chelsea do it and have a few hiccups. The only way to compete with teams of stars is to have a "team", players that play and fight for each other and the club, players that understand where they fit in and how each other play, we have seen that on many occasions and now we are going to try and do the same thing at a higher level. It's not about players , it's a bout a team, and as Kenny keeps saying it's not about individuals its about Liverpool FC.
Things may change as we progress, who knows, but at the moment having a plan other than buy every fucker that is a sta,r is the only way we can compete, and if we have to pay a bit of a premium to do that - so be it.
From everything I hear it was never a case of Downing first choice, Mata the fall back option. I do not believe our transfer spending is done at all.

On a separate note last year we bought Konchesky, Poulsen, Jovanovic and Cole. Perhaps Cole being the most decent signing there - and that hasn't worked out too well as yet. This year we've bought Adam, Downing and Henderson. I don't think it's a massive improvement but it's improvement nonetheless and I'm hoping we're not finished yet. If you add Suarez and Carroll (judgement still out but I think he's going to become a beast of a player). A fit Stevie Gerrard improves that further. It's a considerable improvement on the start of last season.

If you look at where we were as a club, never mind a team, this time last year there should huge optimism throughout. I feared for our very existence as a top flight club this time last year but I see many reasons for some real hope now. Yet there are still people who are out there who think it's all one big game of FIFA or Champ Manager who think's dead easy signing all the best players out there. It's not. So there's no point in getting deflated when we don't sign Sergio Eusebio or Zico Zidane. I am little perturbed about how much we're paying out for some players though.

I agree with what Vlad said - we're building a team not a who's who of footballing big names. We can beat the big teams. We proved that last year. What we need to develop is consistency, team play and technique to turn those draws against smaller clubs into 3 points. It's not a massive leap forward to do that

It feels weird to be of the same side of the argument as Ryan, Peter and Fark but the rest of you are fucking mental if you think this is a good deal.

And there's going to be nobody better than me and Ryan to remind of that down the line.

Kenny also bought one of the best set piece takers in the league, when we already had an abundance of central midfielders. And Jordan Henderson who, since 2009, has apparently created as many goal scoring opportunities as Modric and Nasri, many of which were from a wide position. And lastly, he spent a club record fee of £35m on Andy Carroll, who requires a team to play to his strengths to really get the best out of him.

It's not that much of a stretch.
