This thread has gone shite tbh. We're going round and round in circles, and we're not even celebrating signing players when we were close to being whipped of the map only a year ago.

Its a fucking shame.
Course it is, and it's the usual culprits with the 'I told you so's' before the lad has even signed on the dotted line. Worse thing is, if the lad does well I doubt many of us would stoop to the same levels of one-upmanship, because it's kids play and FUCKING SAD.

fuck off oncy he's never worth 8 mill, have you been following the transfer market at all?

and even the scum are saying its a decent signing for us, but overpriced

Ross, simple question, do you rate downing at all?
Yes. Decent crosser, tidy player who fulfills a role, technically pretty average, no real pace. But he is at the peak of his powers, and i think wingers are generally a lot better in their early twenties than late twenties, usually because their agility and speed decreases as they age.

We're buying a player who at his peak is above average, for money that can buy top level talent. In two years time we're going to be looking for a replacement and he will be worth half as much, and still owed around 8-12m on his contract. This deal will get ugly pretty soon. I've said it loads of times already, but ugly deals like this are only justified by trophies, otherwise they're the reason we didnt win. If we win the league everything I've argued is irrelevant.

The justification for the price is he's English and Premiership proven, if you have a look through the history of our signings who fall into those categpries you'll quickly find that those two things are not worth a premium (unless your in difficulty with the quota)

Never mind all that Ross, it's not particularly about trophies, it's about getting back into the top four preferably this season. If Downing contributes to getting us there , that is the only justification we need, and when we do get there we can at least attempt to compete for the type of player you have in mind.

I thought you were going, because it was too negative around here

Fair enough ross, its just so off you're overwhelmingly focusing on the negative.
As far as I'm concerned our attacking play will flourish next season. The creativity of adam, gerrard and suarez, the delivery of Henderson and downing and the finishing ability of kuyt and Carroll gives me massive confidence for this season

The goal of a transfer window is to improve the squad, and so far we've done it in spades

20 million is over the top. 15 million would be good business. Anything in between is subjective.
No it wouldnt. He's worth about 8-10m

But hey ho, not my fucking money, my club and i have to HOPE he does the bizzo.
Villa paid £12m for him and he's improved as a player. He's not worth 20 but somewhere in the middle, probably 16.

reading this thread on a 23" monitor does not improve matters.

Still I suppose this is like a lot of threads on here the vast majority get it, and three or four don't there is usually a common factor of two in that (Rosco surprises me on this occasion) , and we go round and round in circles because of a small polarised view.

Still maybe that's what we like doing
Well thats good because the deal is (apparantly) 14m rising to 20 with a number of factors in. 1m per year over the contract for champions league qualification and 1m per trophy won. Up to 20m.
S'what i hear.

As all the regulars will attest, I know better than everybody (IMHO)

Anyone who thinks only managers can judge players is a complete and utter fucking moron anyway, history shows your average manager makes more mistakes than successess in the transfer market.

Its like saying you need to be a carpenter to know a piece of wood is broken.
No it isnt. Its like saying you need to be a carpenter to spot the difference between decent quality boring wood or world class wood.
Which is probably fair.

But if you want world class wood, pop over to the sexy boys thread.

The one MASSIVE unknown in all this is where in the FUCK did Comolli hear about the lad!?

Its amazing the network of spies we have.

According to google earth its over 70 miles to Aston Villa.

I cant even wrap my head around all this.

true, but when you bring in a manager and subscribe to HIS style of play you take on all the baggage that comes with that, so whilst you may not rate a player he rates you can at least understand the manager has more of an understanding of the players he wants to fit inside HIS grand plan.

If that's right then I think it's a fucking great deal. The most consistent left winger over the last five years in this league is what we've just bought.

Which is probably what we are paying, with a couple of add ons if we win the league or something.
