C'mon boys we can get this mother to the ton before he puts pen to paper - you know it has to be that way
i have it on good sources that the deals been held up cause he's waiting for the thread pages to increase
he actually feeds off it

keane was a bad deal financial and from a footballing point of view because he didn't need him.
downing is a bad deal financial but from a footballing point of view he walks into our first 11.

I don't think we should stick with the rubbish Maxi (Ross' words not mine) and not improve the team with a decent Downing (Ross' words) because someone better might just pop up at a later date. Whether the cost to do that is excessive is neither here nor there unless we're skint. Again, we don't really know how we are financially so it has to be a case of wait and see.

If we buy another player for 15m+ then surely the money argument is moot and we wanted downing and happy to pay that

if we don't then people can argue then we wasted the money

Do you want to be miserable Rosco? The deal is done, we just have to accept that.

While I understand that you don't like this deal, I don't understand your "how can y'all be happy" standpoint. It is done...its was never in our control. What do you want to do? Stand and revolt in front of Kenny's house? I think its more productive to focus on the lads positive aspects, which he does have a few.

It feels weird to be of the same side of the argument as Ryan, Peter and Fark but the rest of you are fucking mental if you think this is a good deal.

And there's going to be nobody better than me and Ryan to remind of that down the line.
dunno why i'm saying this now, but what the hell: i always feel kind of bad for seemingly trying to give you a hard time, because i rarely totally disagree with what you say, and you always seem to take the stick it in good humour. it probably comes across much more aggressively than it's meant to.

so sorry. sort of.

christ that sounds wet.

As all the regulars will attest, I know better than everybody (IMHO)

Anyone who thinks only managers can judge players is a complete and utter fucking moron anyway, history shows your average manager makes more mistakes than successess in the transfer market.

Its like saying you need to be a carpenter to know a piece of wood is broken.

Haha and very true as well

This is what really fucks me off. Most of us have reiterated time and time again that we don't think the price is fair. Pick out the parts you want to pick out though.
No Mark.

You and many others didn't want him at any price that's the point. Stop dressing this up with non committal platitudes, you dint want him - like plenty of others - now not only have we got him, but we've royally overpaid for him too. And you're justifying it.

I don't mind that you're happy to wish him well and all that shit, I just wish you'd acknowledge you've backtracked in an almighty fashion.

Or perhaps Ryan, posters change their knee-jerk opinion of another clubs player they've seen relatively little of once they've done a little more research (stats, fans of Villa opinions, obligatory vids etc) into the player and his recent form when it becomes apparent he's a target. Hence, "Downing is shit" over a matter of weeks of consideration might become "he's actually pretty decent and will improve our shit left-side no end". The fees paid are irrelevant in an inflated market to the real pressing issue of improving weak areas in our starting 11.

I'm always less inclined to criticise posters who'll be prepared to change their opinions over time than those who bang the same old tired rhetoric about players and disregard anything contrary.

Errr.. justifying what? I've reiterated that I'm not happy with the price, so how am I justifying it? By saying he's a good player and wishing him well?

I notice aswell with regards to Ross, that he's continued to bang on about the price being too high, despite suggestions the fee is alot lower than the £20m that's being quoted by others. If it's £14m plus add ons then I think that's fair, just like the £7.5m on Adam.

You won the thread ages ago, and I don't even know if you want Downing or not.

And for the record seeing as I keep being told I "didn't want him", here is my first post in this thread, from 3 months ago:

I'd have him as a squad player, at the right price. He's better than alot of people give him credit for, but I'd hope we'd also be signing a quick attacker/wide player too.

Yes, clearly I didn't want him. Not that we're not entitled to change our mind based on more info and a closer look at the facts, as Buddha rightly pointed out earlier.

You are not alone, I have been trying to work out where Oncey stands on almost everything for the last month or so, he is so good at wind ups, I think even he is getting confused as to where he stands 😉
We're buying a player who at his peak is above average, for money that can buy top level talent.

The justification for the price is he's English and Premiership proven, if you have a look through the history of our signings who fall into those categpries you'll quickly find that those two things are not worth a premium (unless your in difficulty with the quota)
It's been said before. People keep saying 20M can buy top level talent but the likes of Aguero etc. are never going to go for that, so we are not talking top level talent. If we're talking someone elese then who are these fabled young proven players that can be had for that price ? Exactly.

As for the second paragraph: past history is no indication of future performance. Only time will tell if Downing is exactly what we need or a waste of money.

EDIT. Just seen this from Oncy :

Well thats good because the deal is (apparantly) 14m rising to 20 with a number of factors in. 1m per year over the contract for champions league qualification and 1m per trophy won. Up to 20m.
S'what i hear.

So it's actually an even better deal.
Im an old school childlike innocent Vladders, I want to sign Messi and Higuain but im happy when any player signs for us, i clap my hands with glee and blag my own head into believing that whoever we sign is Jesus' son.
So with that in mind, i cut through all the bollocks (fees, tactics etc) and just think we've cracked it. I just cant help believin.
Basically i didnt want Downing, i reckon hes shit but as soon as we were linked i was all like 'YESSSSS DOWNING WILL REVOLUTIONISE FOOTBALL' and now he's signed i reckon hes about to blossom into the cauc Barnes. The useless cunt.
