And yeah, if I could think of a few posters who seem to like pulling up old posts and old arguments, it's you guys who I'd think of first, it's a pretty sad claim to fame really and hardly an endearing quality.
I mean, it's not like any of you are ever wrong about anything. Are we still keeping things tight Ross?

Hrm, I resent that a little bit.
Jesus, this has all got a bit crazy. I'm not sure what the larger context to all of this is sometimes, in terms of all the ego involved. I thought we were talking about a player we bought, and whether or not it was a good deal. During the process we get to be big blowhards and state our cases because that is what liverpool forums do during the summer, for every player.
I've been dead wrong about many players, and right about others. I hoped they'd all come good, because I'm not an asshole, but what's the problem with balking at a transfer fee, believing its too much for a player you don't rate, and worrying about it and the general trend of purchases made so far? It seems like those on both sides of this argument think the player was overvalued, and differ on how much, and how much that matters. I'd say that reflects a range of how risk averse people are, and their rating of the player, two entirely subjective things. There isn't even a massive disagreement here.
The broader discussion seems to be between optimists and pessimists. The optimists think, look, we are showing the right intent, and this should be incredibly refreshing vs how we were a year ago. The pessimists instead think look, anything is an improvement on disaster, and what we've seen from that disaster is that owners when they come in will be willing to make significant initial outlay, but if the money isn't managed correctly, it isn't just going to magically keep coming, so it needs to be spent well.
This is a risky purchase anyway you cut it due to the outlay and the age of the player. I think that's fair to say. Some can celebrate that we feel that we are in a position where we are comfortable making a risk, and others will worry that the risk might not pay off. That seems pretty normal to me.
