'It is understood that Torres reached an informal understanding with Liverpool before the New England Sports Ventures (NESV) group, headed by John W Henry, took over that he would be permitted to leave at the end of this season if Liverpool had failed to qualify for the Champions League and a good offer came in. The same goes for Reina, with unconfirmed suggestions that a £20m release clause is in place.

Informal understanding means very little anyway, given that none of the people who made that informal understanding are at the club anymore.

And 'a good offer' is pretty subjective too.

Worst case scenario there is that a 'good offer' was actually defined in an 'informal understanding' between Torres and some people who aren't employed by the club anymore. All in all, pretty flimsy.

With Reina, at least there is a figure mentioned I guess. But at unconfirmed one, and its not exactly clear whether this is written into the contract or whether it is another informal understanding.

As has been said before, if they want to go they will go regardless of contracts anyway, but I have my doubts both that they want to or that they will

Given how reluctant Wenger is to spend big, can anyone really see him paying 20m+ for a 'keeper?

They made a massive bid for Reina 5 months ago

Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Joe Cole will both miss the trip to Wigan on Wednesday night, Roy Hodgson today confirmed.

The pair have not recovered from injuries which kept them out of Sunday's 2-0 triumph over league leaders Chelsea.

However, Glen Johnson and Fabio Aurelio could come into contention.

"Soto Kyrgiakos still hasn't recovered from his tonsillitis, Joe Cole still hasn't recovered from a hamstring injury that he's got," Hodgson told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

"Glen Johnson is much better and we'll see tomorrow if there's any reaction to the training session.

"Daniel Agger is out for the foreseeable future. Aurelio is now fit and Ryan Babel is now fit, although I'm still slightly concerned about his heavily bruised ribs and we'll protect him for as long as we can."

Meanwhile, the boss was asked about newspaper stories concerning Pepe Reina's future.

He replied: "There's always spin put on these things. We're very happy to have Pepe Reina and I hope he'll stay a lot longer than the end of the season.

"If at the end of the season he doesn't want to play for Liverpool any more, we'll have to deal with that situation when we come to it, but I don't understand why, seven or eight months from that time, I'm being constantly asked to give my opinion on it.

"My opinion is that he's an excellent goalkeeper and I hope he plays for Liverpool for years and years to come.

"For me, Pepe Reina is one of the most committed players I have at the club. He's one who I never have any doubts about his desire to get on the field, give his best and win the game for the club. That's the most important thing."

In this topic Pepe called a cunt and a bitch. Stay classy guys... :🙂 :🙂

People might just be a little fed up by our players deciding we're not good enough for them anymore. People lash out when they're hurt, when they are rejected by those they love.

So fucking deal with it, Dirk.

pepe can walk into any team in world football (with one obvious exception) so if liverpool aren't meeting his ambitions you can blame him for seeking assurances.

I'm not sure why anyone would fly off the handle because of a tabloid story.

Both Pepe and Torres both have long contracts so I'm none too fussed.

If they feel the need to leave the club and believe that their futures lie elsewhere, then we'll get top dollar.

For the record, I would rather keep the players.

No point in getting excited about what may or may not happen. For now, let's enjoy the rollercoaster ride!

Why would Arsenal be 'on alert' for a 'keeper like Reina?
If you follow the logic (that he's fed up being in a team that hasn't won a trophy for 5 years') then he's hardly like to join a team that's been unsuccessful for longer, is he?

Given how reluctant Wenger is to spend big, can anyone really see him paying 20m+ for a 'keeper?

A move to Man Utd seems unlikely, no?

He's ruled out Spain, so that leaves Man City in the Premier League or a big Italian or German club.

Seems unlikely to me.
because he is a final piece of their puzzle. He will earn them a good 5-10 points extra (maybe even more looking at how they have struggled with HUGE mistakes by the keepers they have hd over the years. Reina would be worth spending big on, because he could not only hand them the title, he could also hang around for 10 years if they are lucky. Well worth every penny of 20 mill pounds for Arsene.
Hardly the final piece, given they need a complete backbone and not just a 'keeper'. They've never replaced Campbell and Vieira and it's likely Fabregas will go soon.

This story was mentioned on Radio City this morning. Generally they only report things that have a modicum of truth.

two obvious exceptions, i think you'll find.

I don't think getting in to CL or not is the ulitmate decider here at all.

If we show ambition, sign the right players, act like a title chasing club and generally show that we mean business. Then that will be enough for Torres and Reina.

They've been promised everthing by the former owners and got nothing in the end. It's up to Henry & co to show what NESV want with this club.

And to be honest, I can understand that if we can't match there ambition, then they should consider the future. Any sane professional would do the same if they want to win something.

But I think, and hope, that it will all be irrelevant as NESV will show their ambition.

I'm happy at the club, but every footballer wants to be competing for trophies and winning things.

He's just making it clear to the powers that be that we have to get our shit together and bring in quality players.

oh, right, spain.

He may want to leave, but if the clause exists then how come a "massive" bid by Arsenal didn't trigger it ?

the bid was less than 20m?

And if a twenty million clause does exist, and even we 'know' about it then I'd assume Arsenal would too. They'd have made the bid already if they were that keen.
