So with the younglings coming through, Kelly looking far better than a bench warmer, and Johnson looking back to his best on the left or right, do we really need a new FB? I think we should strengthen elsewhere. Thoughts?

That's a nice reward for Kelly, looks boss, and he's understudy to Johnson. I'm perfectly happy for our first team to be Johnson on the left and Kelly on the right. Buy backup for the left, but not a huge splurge.
Kelly can play anywhere across the back, so will get plenty of games, provided he can stay fit himself.
I agree we shouldn't be spending a fortune though (unless we can really afford to)

It won't hurt to have two good fullbacks competing for a spot in the starting XI.

I don't want to sell him. No way. I think he's just as good on the left. GJ is about the most two footed player in our side. And I also think Kelly is as good, perhaps even better than GloJo on the right. I want both of them in our starting 11 next season.

Nah, I don't want us going for backups. That's transfer fees, signing on bonuses, pretty big wages for players that not only just warm the bench but get in the way of youth development.
If we want people coming in as backup 'to do a job' when the first choice players are out, then we already have them, particularly at left back. And they'll most likely improve too.
Robinson and Flanno are able backups, proved that against good teams too.
If we go in for a quality left back, it's going to cost an arm and a leg. If we have the money for such a player on top of the budget for CB and a LW or two, then by all means go for it, but if not, Johnson's great in that position, as is Kelly on the right.

This. The best teams improve constantly, but as you and others have said we have higher priorities elsewhere.

I think we need a senior left back as we don't have one. Should we decide to get one, he should be a good one. We have a good crop of youngsters who can play back up, and I'm tired of us buying squad fillers who end up being 'dead wood'. We have a flourishing youth system and they can be 2nd/3rd choices thus saving us millions in fees and wages.
If we're really going to sign a big name striker such as Aguero I'd assume we'd be lining up with a 4-3-3 and relying upon attacking full-backs for width.
Coentrao would fit the bill nicely for the left, Johnson for the right with Kelly understudy/challenging for both positions.

I think Kelly was way better than Johnson at right back and that Johnson was better than himself at left back ... if you follow my logic. Im happy with what weve got for two reasons, firstly i think that we are pretty good at full back now and secondly seeing the kids coming through is a really realy important factor for the club.
I dont actually see the club spunking big bucks on a left back like they did say for johnson... who would they buy anyway??? they might get a 7 or 8M pound player in etc with a bit more experience but i think that would be silly when we really need reinforcement elsewhere...

Magic and Kelly are too injury prone, and whilst the two young lads have been fantastic - and all credit to them for that, I dunno if I'd be ready to chuck them in at the deep end where they could potentially be covering for 2/3 months or something
