By the way. Can we look forward to Brendan Rodgers' team playing the style of football that Spain played last night?

When we replace Adam and Downing with Xavi and Iniesta.
We just don't have the right players to play that way. Sorry, for now.
WE'LL SEE, if he manages to get the right players in.

Thats not how I saw it Ruairi. There certainly was big backing from the Mancs and of course people from Cork. But my experience of it was there there were many non mancs who supported him for his stand as well.
There was also an element that supported Keane over McCarthy because in the two way struggle Mick was perceived as English against Roy's Irish.
These were usually the bandwagon jumpers who supported us when we made it to a finals and had fuck all interested in us otherwise

For what its worth my opinion of Keane then, (and it hasnt changed), was that he was a cunt of the highest order who walked out on his team mates, his manager, his supporters and his country.

Mine too Jack.

He intrigues the hell out me.

He seems to be always on the verge of kicking off.

At anything.

Being an outsider, I was with Keane. He had valid points. The only thing that bothered me was that he didn't return. In the end Keane was right as well.

I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager, and I don't rate you as a person. You're a fucking wanker and you can stick your World Cup up your arse. - Roy Keane

The "Genesis Report" agreed with many of Keane's criticisms, finding that the FAI structure was not conducive to good planning and making a range of recommendations. The complete report was never published for legal reasons.Brendan Menton resigned as FAI General Secretary at this time, and the media linked the two events, though Menton denied this.

He can have valid points, but the timing and behaviour is idiotic. There are forums and times to discuss the FAI setup, and it is not being Capt and walk out during a champioship. If Zlatan today left the squad and made a big scene, you wouldn't care if he had valid points or not.

Keane had been accused of faking injury by McCarthy in front of the entire squad.

That's what set it all off.

He probably did. If you look at a lot of Uniteds players they have a disproportionate lack of caps in comparison with how long their careers lasted.
There are exceptions of course (Beckham, Ronaldo) but usually players who ended up falling out with Fergie and getting bombed out. I think he perhaps pressures players to not play for their countries.
Just an opinion mind you.

I've also heard united fans saying that Beckham didn't play as well for united as what he did for England, so you could be onto something there.

That's true. It was wrong of him to leave the squad but I thought he got kicked out.

How could you possibly think he got kicked out ?

It was major news that he fucked off.

I have a Man U supporting older brother.
Seriously, at the time I thought Keane got kicked out, considering that he called him a wanker etc.
I interpreted him leaving the squad, as him being told to leave by McCarthy. But if he left on his own accord, it changes everything except that he had valid points. He shouldn't have left though.

Keane may have had valid points in Saipan, but they way he went about it stank. He acted like a spoilt teenager. He had a duty as a player to represent his country at international level, and he acted the cunt, and fucked up.

Unfortunately, he still acts the cunt. I always respected him as a player, even when he played for United, but has a person he's just a complete cretin.

As I remember it, he actually did get kicked out, but I think with the attitude he was taking, he wanted to go anyway. He just manipulated McCarthy into kicking him out.

He was going to fuck off and then was convinced to stay. Then I think he gave a newspaper an interview condemning the whole Irish camp and was then rightly fucked out. He was and still is a prick of highest order. He let the country down. We probably would have reached the semis had he stayed.
