What's Babel got to do with "signing quality talent?"
we fucked up with babel but that shouldn't put us off signing potential in the future.

I suppose he's talking about the risks involved with signing young players at comparatively higher prices.,

The main difference is that no one thought Babel was any good; I think the main interest was because Wenger had scouted and rejected him and perhaps Rafa thought he could do a Wenger.

because 18m is a fuck of a lot of money for unproven talent.

babel came with a big reputation after the under 21 world cup. it didn't work out, these things happen but saying 'no one thought babel was any good' is stretching things.

I was dead excited when we bought Babel, largely because Wenger was rumoured to be interested, but baulked at the price-tag

Yeah.

I mainly remember Wenger thinking he was wank.

Which was right.
serious revisionism. maybe whinger didn't want him but he was certainly highly rated.

Babel could still be a decent player for a half decent team

Rafa ruined him.

Whatever,Neil.

I really don't give a shit about a player who has been,is, and probably will always be shit for us.

Spin any web you like about his brilliance.

I wouldn't even make that claim.

I've always thought that the reason Babel impressed when he was younger must have been because he was quicker and stronger than everyone else at underage levels, but once that advantage was lessened at a higher level of the game he got found out for having nothing else in the locker.

If we're writing off this season though, we could do worse to throw him up front and let him bag a few goals and then offload him when someone thinks they can make a passable striker out of him and are willing to pay 10m for him.

I think that's a bit harsh Hardcastle, certainly Babel has let himself down several times.

But, yeah, I'd still give him *another* last few chances

Rosco he showed a fair bit of game intelligence, ability on the ball on top of his athletic aspect during that first 18 months.

Yeah he was a super sub but ruddy good one.

For whatever reason, be it attitude, being a shit rapper or whatever, Rafa lost faith in him.

I wouldnt be surprised if he ended up at some half decent club in Spain or wherever and went on to do quite well for himself, he'll never be a world beater obv but yeah, I think he's got potential in there . . . somewhere.

Well , if Kenny comes back and says he's good he must be then

BTW Babel is shit, but that's one of those things sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
The thing is, you can get away with at best sporadic form and questionable ability if you have the right attitude, like Dirk.
But when you have a "don't give a fuck" attitude like Ryan, you have no chance.
That does not mean that any "startlet" should never be considered again, as I say ....you win some etc etc

regards

no doubt hazard's a risk at £18m or whatever, but the one big difference from babel imo is that at least he actually looks like the sort of player we need in our attack. i know this sounds like being wise after the event, but was it only me who, right from the start - just by looking at youtube vids etc - thought he looked like a big powerful striker masquerading as a winger? all physical attributes and little of the technical ability we needed in a winger. sure, i've always kept my fingers crossed for him that he could do something, but never once has that initial judgement looked in doubt - outside of as a counter-attacking subsitute (which admittedly he's absolutely perfect for), it's always seemed impossible to fit him into the team.

basically, i think he was a bad signing not because he's never fulfilled his potential, but that he's another example of benitez never having the slightest clue how he was going to use a player. malouda, simao, alves, hell even quaresma and pennant, all players i could see the logic in, but babel looked a bad fit from the start.

I don't think Babel's ability is shit (occasionally a goal he's got for us has been a real peach) but I do think his attitude is. He's a complete and utter featherhead and we can't carry that at the best of times, let alone now. I wouldn't be averse to giving him a few games to put him in the shop window, but I definitely want rid of him.
