Cup talk - Spurs at home

Pat Nevin did some BBC analysis on why corners are shit. He blamed it on the grass near the edge no longer going far back enough, and also on it being cut off and joined to artificial grass along the edge. So the players have to bend their runs in a stupid arc and also transition from running on astroturf to grass. So the poor fools can't cope with those perturbations because their brains are not adaptable enough.

Yeah it's a bit shit innit.

You know it wouldn't take that long to knock up a bit of software, so everyone with a season ticket could enter their preferred group and preferred area in the ground, so you'd associate member numbers with each other, and then the system could generate a new seating arrangement that brought mates and families together. You'd have to do it with a disclaimer that said you'd have to be happy with what the system spun, but I'd defo be up for that. I mean maybe one in every so many groups would be pissed off being a few rows further back that they wanted or whatever but overall I think it would improve the match for loads of people. Have it open once every few years or something. Whatevers, will never happen.

I was asked to code something like that for the ex owner of wagamama. It's mathematically quite complex to solve, you need to use all sorts of heuristics and short-cuts to reduce them number of possible seating arrangements to something a computer can cope with. They didn't like how much I wanted to charge for it, so it was left unmade. Perhaps Liverpool would be more willing to pay the price.

Gerrard's set piece delivery was really good as he got older.
Yup.
Early in his career he had an awful knack of not being able to beat the first man.
It was getting so bad that he used to just lob it to the edge of the area to an oncoming Riise to blast a volley 20 feet over the bar.
He improved massively when Kenny arrived.
Kenny would have been old school in his coaching and actually got players to practice corners.
We reaped the benefits for the next 3 years after when we were a genuine threat from corners.

Unlike Portly, I've only been watching Liverpool since 1965. With the big exception of the infamous Aspas corner, last night's efforts by Moreno were the worst I've ever seen. It's bad enough when the first man heads your corner clear, but when he fucking boots it clear, you come to the conclusion that we would be better off conceding the corner and giving your opponents a goalkick. At least they're not going to score a goal on the break.

I've been going to Anfield since 1964 and can testify that shit corners are an essential part of the club's heritage.
The short corner routine developed by Steve McManaman and Jason McAteer usually resulted in the opposition getting possession and scoring from a breakaway.

During our glory years, didnt we have a fanzine called "Another Waster Corner".

How come every time we decide to play well in the league another team has to be just as good or better. While last year when Leicester won or the year after Benitez left all premier league teams except one decide to be collectively shit?

I am just over the moon that our reserves managed and even contest with a team that has so much better depth in their squad!!

Over the years, I have wondered about that. Could it be possible that a succession of managers have thought that practicing corners in training is beneath us? Teams like West Brom that struggle for points certainly make better use of them than we do.

We've not got many tall players who are good at attacking crosses, so I'd like to see us try short corners for a while, where the likes of Milner could either drill in a ball at feet or put the keeper under pressure with a shot. Or just use a corner to start up another passage of attacking play. If you tend to lose possession via corners, use corners in a different way more suited to keeping possession.

Maybe we should just do what Barca used to and just not bother trying to create a direct attack from the corner instead play it out to build an attack as you would in open play.

Regarding Pochettino, that whinging, it feels familiar. I've experienced it non stop recently in matches with an Argentine team. It was a level of outrage beyond the usual game. It goes into the bar and social media after..

Look it's noon now. Everyone stop moaning about how shit we are at corners etc and start looking forward to Maureen's manure getting royally fucked in the hoop later on today.
I wouldn't mind City United winning and us drawing them so we can be the ones doing the fucking. I feel confident we would, especially at OT.

Corners - much like referees, the captaincy, where we are in the running order on MOTD, offside decisions, not being allowed to discuss other sides on this forum, and what our new kit looks like - are one of those things that I simply don't understand people's continued frustration and fascination with.
