It really always did hinge on first xi staying mostly intact to win the title. We don't have the deepest squad, but we do have a bit of a cushion... As long as injuries don't linger too long we can weather the storm.
The same small group of guys have been playing almost every week unrelenting since last year and all there wasn't much rest during the summer ... Hard to stay so focused for so long and why so many clubs fail to defend titles... and to stay injury free at that tempo is extra hard
I can't understand why we let Sarah saunter over to Egypt only for them to say he was injured. Or did we just fulfil protocol by allowing them to check what we were saying was true, that is, that he was injured?
I doubt we had a choice, Doc. FIFA and the national associations seem to get rather exercised by any attempt to avoid making players available in such circs.
I'm fairly sure Egypt let him sit out the last two international breaks already, so it's understandable that they may have wanted him there at least.
I was pleased they decided after he's said he wanted to play tbh, it's rare you get that from a national fa (like Keita being played when clearly bloody injured).

There are huge political issues around Salah & Egypt, upon reflection I suspect that we knew he wasn't going to play & so did they, but allowing them to 'make the decision' may have eased some of that tension around him & the national side.
