Coutinho gone. 142m

I'm a bit sad and not surprised. I remember when he arrived and (if I recall correctly) pretty much took Stewart Downing's place in the team. It's hard to believe that only a few years later Coutinho is the one leaving and Downing is fighting with the Kurds in Syria. Life is funny that way.

When Coutinho came he was just a kid with bad hair. Once the trendy haircuts and tattoos started to appear it was just a matter of time. I don't wish him ill, but I do hope he never scores again and that the rest of his life is a hollow and meaningless sham.

I think this is a very fair and adult viewpoint. I concur entirely.

So we got 106 mill to spend. Bet all the players we're interested in will have a price tag of value + plus 10/20 mill.

That is one of the most galling things about the whole affair.

In all likelihood we will probably end up with inferior player + 10-20M for Coutinho.

I still can't quite believe we're selling him mid-season.

I can't be arsed trawling through the previous pages, because it's bound to be high on emotion, with the usual mix of hate towards the player and the club, countered by the Klopp/Club CDNW brigade.

Coutinho is a top class player. We saw that from the first game, and despite the inevitable inconsistencies that go hand in hand with being a developing player in a tough, foreign league, it was always pretty obvious he would progress and attract the big money clubs. I don't blame him for wanting to play for Barcelona, it's a dream for many South American players. And who wouldn't want to play alongside two of the greatest attackers in World Football? He'll only go onto the next level there, because he'll learn even more from the likes of Iniesta, Messi and Suarez (again).

Obviously the Liverpool fan in me is sad, angry etc about it all, but not nearly as much as I was a few years ago. We buy good players, get a few good years out of them, while fumbling around trying to muster up a side that can consistently compete. Our problem is we build too slowly, we undo our own good work and we more often not, take one step forward and two or three steps back. It happened with Suarez, and unless Klopp gets it right, it'll happen here. And then we'll have the same situation sooner rather than later with Salah and Mane. The rest are by the by, the only players I have genuine respect and slight indulgence for are few and far between - Milner, Robertson, TAA, Firmino, that's about it.

Anyone pretending that we have enough quality to get by with, is kidding themselves really. Coutinho was too often the catalyst for all of our good play, particularly more recently in the big games. That's a difficult thing to replace. You always need someone around the engine room who can probe. Sadly that was all too evidently missing last night and there will be more games where it becomes more and more of a problem and we won't always be able to turn games around, as we have in the last two. Mane is off the boil and Salah is now (back to one again) the only genuine consistent goal threat. When you factor in that many of Firmino, Mane and Salah's goals were a result of Coutinho's productive play, then the problem becomes two fold. We've lost Coutinho's contribution and I'll bet we take a hit in how productive our other attackers are now.

If we think we can get by until the Summer without reinforcing, after foolishly allowing Coutinho to leave mid season, then it'll be an even fucking stupider decision than the one where we thought we could get by without defensive reinforcements.

We need to buy, and I don't mean panic buy. I mean the club had better have an ace up it's sleeve, given it's actively looked to sell it's biggest asset when it's all to play for. If we don't then yes, as Skully would say. We're fucking dickheads.

Modo, you must be delighted your little bird has been set free.

Nah, he's probably even more made up than he can truly spend match threads focusing his hatred towards Lallana and Henderson.

That's assuming our game isn't clashing with Barca's.

Not a fan of the thread title. we got 142m for him - spend it well and this is an incredible opportunity.

Jürgen Klopp offered his reaction to the news Liverpool Football Club have today reached an agreement with FC Barcelona for the transfer of Philippe Coutinho, subject to the player passing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the La Liga side.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “It is with great reluctance that we – as a team and club – prepare to say farewell to a good friend, a wonderful person and a fantastic player in Philippe Coutinho.
“It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known.
“Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen.
“Despite that, we managed to keep the player here beyond the summer window, hoping that we would be able to persuade him to stay and be part of what we are looking to do.
“I can tell the Liverpool supporters that we, as a club, have done everything within our means to convince Philippe that remaining part of LFC was as attractive as moving to Spain, but he is 100 per cent certain his future – and that of his family – belongs at Barcelona. It is his dream and I am now convinced there is nothing left at our disposal to change his mind.
“Philippe has made a fantastic contribution to this club over his five years of service and as disappointed as we are he doesn’t want to extend that, the relationship we have for him means with a heavy heart we wish him well.
“The player remained dedicated and committed to helping us win matches, producing good performances and training hard each day at Melwood after the summer window had closed, despite failing to convince us to allow him to leave during that period and that level of professionalism reflects positively on him.
“Of course, it is totally understandable that supporters will be disappointed; this is always the case when you have to say goodbye to someone special. But, as hard as it is sometimes to accept, it is part of life and part of football – individuals have their own dreams and their own goals and objectives in life.
“Players will come and players will go, that is football, but as a club we are big enough and strong enough to continue with our aggressive progression on the pitch, even when we lose an important player. We have never been in a better position in recent times, as a club, to react in the right way. We will use our size and strength to absorb moments like this and still move forward.
“I have been here long enough now to know in the history of Liverpool, key players have left before – but the club always goes on. You cannot transfer the heart and soul of Liverpool Football Club, although I am sure there are many clubs who would like to buy it.
“I have so much belief in the talent we have here already and even more faith, together with our owners, that we will make continued investment into the playing squad, which will allow more growth and more improvement.
“So as we bid farewell to Philippe, we continue on our path of progress and development as we work towards our common goal of bringing trophies back to Anfield.”

Aye not liking the thread title - Stupid! Shame he's gone (I fucking knew he would actually) But spank the cash wisely and we move on. Lemar would be lovely 🙂

Great post Mark. The only part I disagree with is the sentence above. The only players in the modern game who will truly show loyalty to us are the ones who will not get a shot at Madrid/Barca/Juve. If TAA, Firmino, Robertson start performing at a high enough level to be consistently on the wishlist of Madrid and Barca they will be out of here as soon as they can. The era of Carra and Gerrard is over. Milner is an exception though. He could have made more money sitting on the bench at City and picked up a few more medals. Kudos to him to put his playing time over everything else but he is a very rare case.

That's a very cool statement. Love Klopp.

So that's 1 in, 1 out for this window and the same coming in the summer.

Treading water, feels like forward momentum has gone. Shite.

Bah humbug.. (Thread Title)

We've only 100 mill of it to spend

After first instalment for VVD probably about 75 mill left

The there is the 50 million for Keita.. Assume that's done on instalments aswell say 25 mill up front..

We are left with 50 mill.. So Mahrez it is, and maybe another Shit Goalkeeper

Y'all cunts can fuck off

Shit house skip rat who improved, but still went missing more than people like to admit

If we buy a mahrez/draxler/lemar this window then fucking bonza. If we don't then nay mind

We'll be grand as we've got Mo motherfucking Salah

It is such a great chance to rebalance the squad. We have talent across the front, we have dross at the back and are thin in the middle. We got his best 4 months out of him at the start of this season, and an increased transfer fee. Winner. There is no way he would have performed if we kept him post-Jan.

Lemar, Milinkovic-Savic and a GK - and We're fucking laughing.

Fuck the little rat cunt.
I'm a little surprised at you. You always come across as pretty sound. He's hardly a 'little rat cunt' just because he wanted to leave. He didn't do a Torres and completely down tools. We got a fuck load of doe for him - I just hope the club invest it wisely...................

Torres didn't down his tools completely until after his move. Good man.

Fuck it. Bought for 8.5 sold for 142 after four years. Why does anyone think a Brazilian would want to spend his life in NW England when he and his family could be in Spain? Imagine his wife comes back from visiting Suarez’s wife and thinks “I want some of that”. If you buy south Americans this is always going to happen.

Its the Coutinho grieving process mate, as Farky said. 😉

There has been some stuff coming out that he even paid for a small part of the transfer fee himself along with Nike, a total of 15 mill £.
If true, he really didnt want to be here.

But I think its fair to call him a rat for jumping ship mid season. We're looking good in both the League and CL, and he's cuptied for Barca.
