Next season is going to be very tight for the 2 final CL spots with City and Chelsea most likely going to take 1st and 2nd.

The next two places are between Arsenal, Liverpool and United with Spurs and Everton longer shots.

Worth looking at the different squads, holes and potential signings to see how the teams may fair next season.

----------------------Szczęsny

Debuchy---Mertesacker----Koscielny------Gibbs

------------Arteta------------Ramsey

Cazorla-------------Ozil--------Wilshere

---------------------Sanchez

I think Sanchez would be better in place of either Cazorla or Wilshere but they will need to sign a world class centre forward. Can't imagine either these two would be willing to spend most of the season on the bench but that looks very likely now.

If they strengthen defense and get a better player than Arteta in the centre I think they will be very strong next season.

Hopefully they will suffer their usual new year blues but with Wenger now willing to open the cheque book for big signings far more regularly they are getting stronger and building a strong squad with good cover around the team.

Not quite sure Wilshere would play that kind of role.. Also, Sagna has gone to City and Debuchy will be their RB.

When Walcott comes back and they have Oxlade-Chambo back too I think they will be a big contender. All they are missing is someone that isn't a complete shithouse in the middle. Arteta is one of their weakest links and they need to either buy in this position (Khederia being linked!!) or hope that Diaby's return from injury sees him fit back into that role.

It sounds like they're going to be getting rid of Arteta. But Bender nor Khedira seems like a realistic player for them to get in to replace.

It'll also be interesting to see how Walcott figures into their side once he's back.

That looks like a team that can compete with good sides that set out to score goals, but may lack the outright attacking threat to break through against defensive, lower table sides. And it's really one injury away from being Giroud leading the line again.

Interesting thread idea mate - want to thank you again for being a sane Manc who can promote discussion (Warning - just stay away from Avemnon!)

Sangna is no longer there (City) - he'll be replaced it seems by Debuchy.

Sanchez is a great pick up for them - a fighter in the Suarez mold, which will have a good influence on the many shithouses that team carries. With Giroud too, that's 2 players who can score 15-20 goals ... They may be the dark horse for the title this year ...

My worry is if they sign a world class striker then they are a real threat.

I don't think you (& sadly us) have to worry about that mate - they're a threat for the league title, and that means it's City's & Chelsea's worry, not ours!

As for a ' world class striker ' - i think that's what Sanchez is to them ..

Definitely... although they have a host of players who go missing when required to battle a bit (e.g. Cazlorla, Arteta, Ozil, Giroud etc) they have a lot of quality and if Ramsey finds the form he had last season and they don't suffer as many major injuries to the likes of Theo and The Ox then I think they are almost a definite Top 4 team.

Maybe so, but that would just leave one CL place.

But I have a sneaky suspicion that they will sign Sanchez and a new striker.

After signing Debuchy and Sanchez, I don't know if they have any money left for a striker. That's 40-50 M quid outlay there, plus big wages.

I think Arsenal have a lot more money available than previous years.. Pretty sure that their Stadium is now all paid off and so the shackles are being loosened.

It is and they have about £100m in the bank.
Does having that money entitle them to spend it all per FFP? Or is that figure unspent revenue from the previous seasons within the FFP window.

Bit like saying City have 999999999M in the bank. They just aren't allowed to spend it without repercussions.

They are already a threat. Last season they would surely have been up there with LFC/CFC/MCFC had it not been for an horrendous string of injuries. They actually had TWICE as many 'Injury Days' than any other club. They are definitely going to be a danger this season with added strength in depth.

I see something like :

-----------------------------Szczęsny

Debuchy------Mertesacker----Koscielny------Gibbs

----------Wilshere/Areteta -----------Ramsey/Wilshere

Ox/Walcott/Sanchez------------Ozil/Cazorla/Sanchez---------Sanchez/Podolski

--------------------- Remy/Giroud/Walcott

They will probably make about £30m to £50m next season with new commercial partnership and increased TV money.
If you assume that most contracts are around 5 years long they could probably spend another £80m including wages and still comfortably pass FFP.

ChastenedMUFC, you seem like a good lad so get yourself an avatar. I suggest Moyes or something like that.

Sanchez is predominantly a winger(right) not a striker btw. I presume they'll use someone else up top(they're odds on to sign Balotelli for some reason), or use a rotating front 3 where he's not on his jack upfront.
I can see them signing a DM and possibly a CB, like we need to.

Notice something in the lineup you've listed @Frogfish ? Where is the depth at the back? This is the part which I hope is Wenger's blind spot. While I think Koscileny is overrated, he did have a decent season paired with Mertesacker. The two of them missed some games each last season, but still enough for them to play 32 and 35 games respectively. Sagna played 35 games (he appeared for just 20-odd games in the two previous seasons but was available for 35 in the shop window season). The only significant longer-term injury at the back was Gibbs I think, playing only 28 games.

After that, they have Vermaelen, who was crocked for more than half of the last season, and... erm, who else? No doubt, their front six looks really deep, and they'll likely score more goals than they did last season, but they've been lucky that despite all their injuries last season, they didn't lose their key defenders for more games. Debuchy played 29 games for Newcastle last season, and missed games through an assortment of muscle injuries (hip / thigh / hamstring / groin).

But Wenger is going to add more goal makers and goal scorers. I hope he continues to stay blind to the risks at the back.

By the way, is Flamini still there? Don't see him listed so not sure if he was omitted or already left.

Arsenal will get top 4 next season like they always do and if they can steer clear of multiple injuries along with signing one of those Germans for their midfield they will go close to the title.

Unless Rodgers really is an absolute genius then its us and United fighting for 4th place with Spurs sniffing around, forget Everton for 4th, no chance, wouldn't be surprised to see them finish 8th/9th next season with Europa League football being a big burden on that small squad, imo.
