City (A) post game

Indulge if you want but I know what I saw. He needs to take a big step up this season. Even in the big games last season when he did play well it took about half an hour for him to get involved. It just isn't good enough now.

I think we have much much bigger problems in the side than Coutinho's inconsistency at the moment.

Markovic is going to be immense for us.
This lad has the same kind of approach as Sterling. Excited about seeing him getting 90 minutes against some teams very soon.

There was that 'best 11' thread recently and I think I was the only one to put Markovic in mine.

This guy is being seriously underestimated on here.

Minolet needs some competition, one through his legs and the other at his near post, is really poor for team challenging for the league

Don't deny that he wasn't at his best today, or that he needs better competition than Brad Jones.
But he really wasn't at fault for our loss today. The first was a point blank half-volley.
The second - maybe he could have got to it, but the movement from Jovetic was too good. Plus Johnson was in the fucking way (who should have cleared using his head).
The last - well 50/50 really. He was one on one with one of the best strikers in the world. He should have covered his near post a little better, but hardly something to criticize him about.
Today we fucked up in defense - pure and simple. No point blaming Mignolet.

Carra and Neville have given some (not all) blame to Lovren for every goal

He was out of position for the first. Shouldn't have pushed up so high for the second. And was out of position for the third.

They thought he could have done better but that wasn't the point.
They were basically saying that the entire defence at the moment are incapable of basic defensive positional change that you learn as a school boy.
When the passage of play moves to one direction, the entire defence should do the same, when it changes, adapt again. But as a group.
Right now when lovren moves, Skrtel doesn't. When Moreno moves wide, Lovren doesn't shift.
It's basic stuff that you'd hope all four of them shouldn't even have to think about, but alas, they're going to have to put in serious hours on the training pitch.
Unless Rodgers really believes individual errors are the cause of his woes. Hope not.

As I said yesterday (I think) that game was setup for him. Defending deep, hit them on the counter with pace, more space as a sub.

His best games for us will come away from home.

It was truly abysmal. Just awful from Lovren.

My take on Lovren for a while has been that he needs to come in and organise the defence, be the leader. Be what Carragher was for his last few seasons. If he can do that he'll be a good signing. But as for actually being a top class centre half in his own right? I don't really see that happening.

After 180 mins of Premier league football?
He was one of the best cbs in the league last season with even better stats than Kompany.
He'll be ace if given time.

I think we have much much bigger problems in the side than Coutinho's inconsistency at the moment.

Well, as has been said, if he's the brains of the team then it's hardly a minor problem if he's struggling. But I wasn't grading the problems, sorry, I wasn't aware this was expected.

If Lambert had buried that chance rather than try a crap half hearted pass to Sturridge then City woudl have panicked and we would have salvaged a point. But he didn't, and then Johnson hobbled off and that was that.

Another day .... heads up

Just to say I thought Moreno was ace ! A pity about his error, a lack of communication, surprised by that downward header or maybe just not up to the pace of the PL. He's going to be great though, very fast, good tackler, puts in excellent crosses and is confident and technically sound - I can see why Rodgers was so persistent in his efforts to secure him. I just wish he had shot when through on goal instead of trying to cut it back.

He's going to miss the Spurs match but hopefully we'll see him back soon after.

That was my feeling too. As mentioned by others, some of our players found themselves in good positions, yet for some reason made the wrong decisions.
We definitely had our chances, but City simply took theirs, and TBF they also looked at times like they could create more anytime.

I also liked what I saw from Moreno.

BTW, is it confirmed that he's out of the Spurs game?
If so, we may have a FB problem.
When are Flanagan and Enrique expected to be fit?

Its not confirmed. But I'll be surprised if he's back 6 days after twisting it that badly. He could be lucky though and not gotten any ligament damage.

Well, he did play to the end of the game. Here's hoping he's fit fot Sunday.

Indeed. Saw the Echo saying he was limping with his foot heavy strapped and Rodgers said there were some swelling. He could be lucky and make it. Hope so as he had a very good debut bar that one defensive fuck up.

I thought we outplayed them and controlled them for long periods. We looked comfortable at the back as a unit and it was dumb mistakes that cost us, I dont really understand all the critiscism of Mr Rodgers, its not the unit or the shape that made Moreno plant his feet.

Im certainly not as concerned as most, and I worry that after Tottenham this place will melt all the way down. This is a bastard tough start to the season and one that was always going to be a test with bedding new players in and shit. After Spurs we play Villa, West Ham, West Brom, QPR and Hull in our next 6 games with only Everton at home against a top 8 side. By then we will have had a 2 week international break with more time to get Lallana and Markovic match fit.

Im not brushing this result aside btw, but its away against the Champions and the strongest squad in the league after week 1. Its not a massive barometer of what we should expect going forward, and has been pointed out we are still 3 points up on the corresponding fixtures last year. We will be there or there abouts, and its looking immense squad wise here we have 2 players for every position minimum.

I thought Moreno looked great apart from that one mistake, and Skrtel has started the season well. I really cant wait to get Lallana into this team as I think the whole team will benefit from him. My biggest concern was that we start the season with just Sturridge and Lambert but bringing in Mario has really calmed me down on that front. My only real concern now is that DM role. Gerrard just isnt the one for me, hes great when we have the ball, making triangles and pinging 40 yarders but when we dont have the ball he just looks lost. I really cant see us signing one to be honest now, unless Agger and Borini go out for maybe 20m we might go in for Song, but its frustrating as we are so fucking close to the perfect model.
I guess if we dont the second best solution is to invert that midfield triangle and lose something further up the pitch.

That is all assuming Can isnt ready yet, although in pre season he looked amazing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously we have options in all those positions so its just an idea.

Ming 5 : He really was way out of position to stop that 3rd goal and looked like he had lost his bearings. Pity Chelsea would never sell Cech to us.
Moreno 7 : As above.
Lovren 4 : He needs to get on the same page as Skrtel with each directing their respective FBs into position. With the 1st it was difficult, zero pace on the ball but his header should have been better, put it out of play or even up into the air to give himself time to re-adjust. I don't blame him as much for their 3rd as some. It was a superb inch-perfect pass from Navas and Aguero beat Lovren for pace over 20m.
Skrtel 5 : He continues to remain static, both in pressing forward and in closing that gap to Lovren when Lovren moves towards an attacker. Forget what ever else he did because that alone is causing a huge headache.
Johnson 5 : It wasn't in defence that was the problem today because City targeted Moreno. It was in attack - I had to vent at the TV on numerous occasions when he ran out of ideas and lost possession or passed the ball way. I'm pleased Manquillo will be back in the team next week.
Gerrard 6 : a bit too quiet for me for the captain. Solid without being exceptional though he did amble around a little too much in the 2nd.
Coutinho 5 : He really is an inconsistent player. I actually think he needs more space in front of him, he's superb running from deep or on the break but not so creative and loses possession too frequently for my liking when camped around a strong defensive team. Sterling or Lallana may be better at #10 in matches like this.
Henderson 6 : Far far from his best game. His energy doesn't give him a pass on this one. Twice he got in behind their defence and twice fucked it up by taking too many touches when all he had to do was a one touch pass across the face of the goal. Seemed to lack attacking verve yesterday too.
Allen 8 : I thought he was excellent until running out of steam. All over the pitch, defensively aggressive and constantly available for the pass. Instigated a lot of our attacks. He was superb in midfield and gave YaYa a real run for his money.
Sterling 6 : The bar is set rather higher for young Raheem this season ..and he didn't reach it. Seemed to lack creativity for once and wasn't aggressive enough in his attacking.
Sturridge 7 : Typical Studge. Very quiet and then exploded into action. He did look to take them on and was a little unlucky not to get something for his troubles apart from an assist (if given).

Rodgers 8 : I didn't see anything wrong in the way he set us up. His subs came early and were aggressive. The fact we had the better of the match up until the 1st goal was promising. In the 2nd we had to press and City are a team with world class players who can exploit that. The 1st goal decided the pattern of the match, had we got it the whole game could have been turned on it's head.

When are Flanagan and Enrique expected to be fit?

Both are training so I'd expect both to be ready by next week. Luckily we are well stocked with FBs this season !

I thought we did ok, it was frustrating that it was mistakes that cost us again.

I'd be all for ditching the current set up at the back. Drop Johnson, who has been awful, for that Mani kid. Bring Sakho in for Skrtel, not that Skrtel has done anything wrong. Drop Gerrard, it's time. Keep him on the bench and bring him on further up the pitch later in games. I'd be tempted to put Henderson in that place, he has the energy and brain for it.

Considering we were away up against one of the top 5 clubs in the world I thought we played pretty well and who knows if Studges' marginal offside goal had been allowed ( on another day it may have been ) we may have got a point. Ming is seriously starting to worry me though - his positioning was diabolical for the third goal, and his kicking hasn't improved at all from last season.

I'm in agreement with most of what you say but Johnson = Skrtel. No way.

I expected us to hit them on the counter anyway but I was genuinely worried they would score every time they attacked. The had a lot of the ball playing in front of our back four. Now if we had our two banks of four keeping them out I would have been a lot more confident but we didn't. City remained patient and little runs off the ball caused us trouble. Their two wide players especially, Silva and Nasri came inside exposed us time and time again.

Not sure on your scores for Lovren and Allen, but apart from that I agree. I thought Lovren was ok, or decent, worthy of maybe a 6 or so. Granted he should of pushed towards Silva for the goal, but it looks like they've been told to 'not leave your wing man' at CB and as Skrtel wasn't moving....
As for Allen, I think he's worthy of a 6, he didn't really do much wrong, but he doesn't do fuck all. He moves about and is available for a pass, but his passes go nowhere and create nothing, and he offers nothing going forward. And seeing as Gerrard is the DM I'd have thought he and Henderson should be offering more going forward, instead of buzzing around like wasps, causing the opponents headaches when they're on the ball, but not exactly helping us when we're on the ball.

Heh, I actually didn't find that at all, although my stream was fairly abysmal.

My impression was that we were generally fairly comfortable, but 3 or 4 really bad errors just gifted them opportunities from relatively little pressure. Now whether the errors were individual or systematic I'll leave to better judges, but I certainly never felt we were besieged.

I think the defence could do with a DM helping and protecting them, and picking up runners. We don't currently have a DM that's capable in the team. A proper DM would have been a big help in games like this.

But he's probably going to Arsenal.

😢

Ha. Maybe I was just being a bag of nerves but once they got the first goal I feared a beating.
