City (A) post game

Couple of random thoughts:

-Moreno is quicker than I thought, he looked jet heeled at times last night. Also loved him getting to the byline and whipping in the low cross a couple of times. That is a tactic that City's fullbacks have used quite effectively in seasons past and our fullbacks NEVER try it.

-Ever since Mr. Rodgers played Raheem centrally in the diamond at the tail end of last season he hasn't really played that well on the right. I'm not sure if that's because he would prefer to play centrally now or if it's just because he looked so much better in the number 10 role.

-I thought Allen played really well in the first half, I love the way he closes down in tight spaces. However, he just doesn't have the qualities to change the game in the final third.

-Emre Can must be struggling with a knock still because he looks to be playing at half speed compared to everyone else.

-I thought Hendo, Coutinho, and Sterling were all a notch or two below what we needed in performance to challenge City last night. Overall our passing game just isn't clicking yet, it will take a minute for us to really hit stride.

-Liverpool need to play a shit team to get the confidence going again, perfect timing to face Spurs.

Think big bucks is being quoted for him. 20-30mill?

Tbh I only have heard any transfer talk about him from my Arsenal mates so not sure on the money. I have always been impressed by Big Billy Carvalho whenever I have seen him play though. About as much of a proper DM as you could ask for.

We played well for most parts of the game until the schoolboy defending errors put paid to our chances then we fell flat on our faces. Lovren has made 3 errors in the last 2 games and we conceded 3 goals directly from them. So much for the 2nd coming of Carra. Johnson, well he should just fuck off really. He offers us absolutely nothing in defence and attack. Coutinho needs to find his rtyhm and quickly too or he'll be doing bench duty.

Moreno despite his error that caused a goal looks promising. Markovic's touches when he cane on was awesome. I like this lad. Sakho deserves a game.

I hope BR knows his strongest XI and put them out at Spurs. We need a big win there.

Out of morbid curiosity I kind of want to re watch the match and log exactly what happened on each of Glen Johnson's touches in the final third. Seems like it ended in disaster every time.

Yes it did evwrytime he went into final third nothing happened. I am one of those that actually rate him too.

One other thing about last night: the mancs shouldn't be allowed to co-opt Hey Jude as some kind of anthem. They should stick with Freddie and the Dreamers or some other local act.

What do you mean nothing happened? He gave the fucking ball away and set up a counter attack. Coutinho was guilty of something similar.

I think he means nothing happened for us.

Obviously lots happened for the mancs when Johnson was on the ball

I wondered if that was a dig at us or do City regularly use Hey Jude?

I've noticed it for a while, certainly since the sheikhs have been there. They replace "Hey Jude" with a typically grating and monotone "Cit-ehhhh"

Did a quick google search. They've been singing it for over 40 years apparently. Something to do with the song being released at the same time they won the league in '68.

That I don't believe. I've heard it since the Sheiks but it was never common before that. That's a bit of myth-making.

A few things came out of the game for me:

Skrtel does about 98% of things in matches at a tremendously high level and looks the best CB on the planet. Unfortunately he has a 2% very average (and costly) seemingly every game.

I thought Ming should have done better on the first goal; powerful as the shot was it went straight through him

Moreno looked promising - particularly after Markovic came on. On his heels for the goal - time will tell if that's a pattern or a one off.

Clearly Rodgers hasn't been on here reading the opinion of self appointed experts else there's no way Johnson would have been close to the starting line-up. But I digress. Glen Jo was pretty solid; didn't set up a goal but didn't cost one either - linked up pretty well without providing the cutting edge to get in behind though he was keen to do it multiple times.

Henderson - solid but looked level or two below his opponents in this match. Tireless work ethic will get you so far; he needs to be able to step up the quality another level to compete with teams like city. The little free-kick move was a case in point; beautifully executed by Gerrard gave Henderson plenty of space right at their 6 yard box. His first touch is atrocious and the moment is gone. Again, great run into the area, good ball by Sterling but Henderson can't get himself in the right position to make it happen immediately and the moment is gone.

Thought Gerrard was great. Worked much harder than last week; some beautiful passing; harassed them a lot more and tackled hard. He's not 23 anymore so people looking for that best get over it.

Sturridge looked a pale imitation of himself - like he needed Suarez to be nearby giving him confidence. Not convinced he can play on his own up front and didn't look as determined as I'd like to see him.

Sterling started very brightly and some of his efforts in the first 20 minutes really did confirm that he's a scary talent at only 19. World at his feet. Drifted off a little after that but still looking to make something happen.

Allen - utterly anonymous. When he got the ball about 3 minutes into the second half near their area I actually commented I'd forgotten he was on the field. Yes he got the ball a fair amount; he ran a lot but he didn't influence the game for us and, against city, we need everyone helping us.

Lambert; feel for him. Living a dream which could become a nightmare. Should have had two goals but, instead, we had one - an own goal at that. A striker for the big teams takes that chance in the second half and buries it - he doesn't try to square it across the six yard line. He needs to step up mentally.

Coutinho; genius at times but didn't create the space for himself that he needs to wen playing these bigger teams. Maybe it's going to come but there is an element of the flat track bully in there. I don't mind it - you need to win the other games as well and he absolutely helps us do that but maybe he's not up it in the biggest games. That's something he and the coaching staff need to work on.

Thanks Fabio - it is exactly what I meant - he does not even try to go past them in a clever way - he either just stands there and pass it to the side OR tries to walk through them and nearly always fails to do that because somebody some day will need to tell him that he is not a member of the X-Men with powers to go through other players.

Allen 8 : I thought he was excellent until running out of steam. All over the pitch, defensively aggressive and constantly available for the pass. Instigated a lot of our attacks. He was superb in midfield and gave YaYa a real run for his money.

That score has got to be a type, right.

YaYa looked annoyed with Allen in the same way as the postman is annoyed with a terrier that just won't go away. It's never going to hurt him or do anything to cause him a problem but the constant yapping is irritating.

I genuinely forgot he was on the pitch; he went after YaYa every time he got the chance, didn't get the ball off him on a single occasion and simply didn't influence the game.

He can be good - in fact, he can be great. That said I wonder if we're a bit small at times; Coutinho, Allen and Sterling (though he plays bigger) looked like kids at times against the City players.

Not at all. The work he does can easily be overlooked but he was buzzing around that midfield all evening until tiring (not surprising after the amount of work he got through). Continually pressuring in midfield and pushing us forward, not back or sideways, I though the was excellent. So did Pearce writing for the Echo it seems :

Allen carried on where he had left off as the Welshman worked tirelessly alongside Jordan Henderson to win back possession and used the ball wisely.

Agree with the comment on being a bit small - maybe Emre will help with that.

Has anyone yet mentioned what a massive fucking pussy Dzeko is?
He went off because of a scraped leg.

GAAAAAAAAaaaaayyyyyyyyyy!

I haven't forgotten the blatant time wasting he did at the end of last season when City were struggling. He's one of the worst play actors in the league.

Yep.
For a man of 6 ft 4 he's a fucking nonce.
Even his sly little raised elbow on Dejan went pretty much unnoticed.
Hope someone decks the twat shortly.

Yep, laying on his hole for 8 minutes at Goodison in the last week of the season.

I fucking hate that cunt.

Agree with all of that apart from Johnson who I thought was very poor again and Allen who I think had a typically very sound game.

I'm past the tipping point with Johnson now...he can't win me back no matter what he does.

Good post though Wiz.

Johnson has finally fucked me off.

I don't know whether it's age, injuries, malaise, or what, but something is wrong.

I rewatched the city game. Dunno why, I've plenty of better things to do, but I did. Skrtel spent half his time covering for the fucker, who was just strolling back. It meant we were completely misshapen at the back.

That alone isn't reason for the defeat, but it hardly fucking helped. If it continues throughout the season it will cost us points.

.......

Wiz - I totally agree with you regarding the size of our players when they are up against City. I think specifically against City we need to play Can in the middle because that trio of Coutinho, Sterling and Allen just find it a little difficult. I also think it is one of the reasons why it appears that City sometimes glide along in games without actually looking like they are trying - the guys in the middle of their team are just all fucking tall and can play football, and none of our lot have the fight of Suarez to push those big bastards a little harder. For that short period before Johnson went off when we had Lambert, Can, and Markovic on - who are bigger stronger players physically - it looked like we were going to make something of the game and started penetrating a little better - it is a pity Johnson got injured at that moment and we were down to 9 men.

Also having said all the above - I do actually think City don't have this higher gear of play that everyone thinks they have. You know for instance you can tell when the likes of Chelsea/Arsenal go from playing bad/average/good - but with City I have come to the belief that the way they played against us is them at being at their best - they sort of glide through games and I reckon if you push them hard enough they won't know how to react any better than what they play normally.
