City (A) post game

It's far too early to tell. Let's see how he fares once we have a more settled back four that has at least played more than a handful of games together.

Totally agree, but was never convinced by the signing when it happened. As I say hopefully proved wrong.

He scored important goals against City and Spurs, and orchestrated the wins against Everton and Arsenal of I remember correctly.

I think he also scored against either City or Chelsea in the first half of the season, and scored a key goal late on in a match we were struggling in (Sunderland?)

Indulge if you want but I know what I saw. He needs to take a big step up this season. Even in the big games last season when he did play well it took about half an hour for him to get involved. It just isn't good enough now.

For those that didn't see Carra and Neville, apparently over 50% of City's attack came down our left hand side. Allen and Coutinho were not protecting Moreno enough.

It was a pity Rickie didn't bury that chance that bounced to him. A 3 2 defeat would have been a fairer reflection of the match.

The Skrtel/Lovren partnership has a long way to go. Every time Lovren was drawn to the left (to protect Moreno), Skrtel held his position in the central right position leaving a gaping hole through the centre. I wonder how long it will be until Sahko is given a go.

We looked so much better when we had that urgency. If he managed to put that away, a third was on the cards.

After managing to collect my thoughts, here's my 2p worth...

- We lack creativity up front, City had 2 banks of four and we created little in front of it, we had no imagination at all, with Lallana and Balotelli to come in this will change.

- Defensively we looked ok, not as bad as last season, if it wasn't for the sloppy first goal which came from a mistake from Moreno, who I believed actually had a decent game, I don't think City would have broken us down.

- Really bad day at the office for us, but only 3 points lost, we need to pick our heads up for Tottenham.

It's time for Brendan to give carra the call as defensive coach, his breakdown and analysis of how to mould our back four as a unit would be great!

Looking good up until the opposition score isn't particularly useful. What'd be nice if the opposition didn't score at all or at the very least didn't look like scoring in every attack.

It was just so sloppy and unnecessary. City are a really good team and some of their attacking play was very slick but the manner in which we conceded on all three occasions was very disappointing.

The most disappointing thing of all though was that once again we appeared to lose our heads and were all over the place for a period in the second half. That seems to happen far too regularly and one day we're going to come up against the wrong team on the wrong day and get properly punished for it.

At this point there is probably little point in saying "Rodgers needs to do something". It's tired. It feels like no matter how good Lovren or whoever else is meant to be, we're still going to suffer at the back.

Onto the positives...

We didn't seem to catch a break in the final third today but generally speaking I thought some of our attacking play was good. Markovic's cameo looked very encouraging. And I actually thought Moreno looked pretty decent bar that stupid air kick (which could've been any one of them).

Glad there's some balance to the Moreno blaming that went on in the match thread. He does seem a bit one footed though, and I think if he went for that clearance with his right he could have stopped the goal. Overall, a promising debut and the link up between him and Markovic looks to have some potential.

I've got a new nickname for Glen Johnson, "The Black Hole" (no racist) because as soon as the ball enters his possession it is going to disappear and be gone forever.

What a pathetic player at this point in his career.

Well my 2-1 prediction was a goal out but I wasn't at all too dismayed with that at all. It showed that City, playing the same team from last season, have a settled side that works extremely well. It was really too early for us to be playing them with the changes we've made. Our defence cost us two goals but when you have two players not only new to the team but one of them just off the plane then it was no surprise they came unstuck.

Can't blame Lovren for the 3rd, a sensational pass from Navas and not many CBs could outpace Aguero over 20m, I do blame Ming for leaving a gap at his near post that a double decker could have squeezed through though.
The first showed the lack of playing time (both together and for Moreno). The 2nd was just brilliant and impossible to stop. However there are no surprises when you look at that City attack.

In midfield we did very well and we didn't lose out to a powerful City midfield. Our passing all over the pitch was slick and accurate. Allen was superb but ran himself into the ground. Henderson had an off day for sure, as did Coutinho & Sterling. Sturridge was Studge, quiet most of the time and then explodes into action. We maybe saw some nervousness from new players (Moreno & Lambert) who both laid the ball off when they had great chances 1 on 1 and should have buried it themselves ! Henderson wasted two golden opportunities when behind the City defence, both times when it should have been first time across goal he took 2-3 touches and the opportunities were gone.
Markovic made his debut and shows great promise (as does Moreno once he gets that defensive side sorted). Manquillo should have started - Johnson was abysmal in the final ¼ of the pitch. We have pace to burn all over.

Here are the stats pretty much underlining that we played very well most of the game, just a couple of defensive slips by a new defence against the best attack in the league and a lack of sharpness on our behalf in front of goal. The team will get much better when you consider that half of them haven't settled into the team yet (Moreno, Lambert, Lovren, Can, Markovic) and 3 were making their PL debuts. Confident we'll beat Spurs next week !

They're great going forward, but we helped them look awesome with some shit play at the back.
A decent defensive coach would be a great summer signing.
Moreno did well until the goal.
Johnson is still shit.
Lallana will prove to be a much better attacking option than Coutinho this season, who seems to be becoming a bit of a luxury in my eyes.
Like hell did we pummelled. The game and the stats show otherwise.

We've got lots to do whereas this was away to one of the most widely talented squads in football football.

We were in fantastic form going into the match at the Etihad last season and still got beat.

We're still finding our way without Suarez now but we had more corners and more shots than them.

Our defence needs drilling. Shit that Johnson is out and Moreno unlikely to train for a bit so they're not going to get the chance.

Hopefully Rodgers will recognise the gaps that Carra and Neville have highlighted and concentrate on addressing it.

The thing is there is no point in overanalyzing the game.
We played away to the best attacking team and home team in the league.
They've got a settled and experirnced team with quality everywhere.

With 2 new defenders it was uninvietable that we would see some hick ups.
Sadly they scored on 3 of their 4 shots, which is unlikely clinical.
We desperatly need to sort out the individual errors.

Loads of positives imho but the result was shite. Onto next week.
Spurs will be tough but I expect better from both a defensive perspective and individually.

We lost against Southampton early last season and Suarez was suspended. No one went mad whining about 'the post Suarez era'. They looked at the team and saw the positives that were going to develop.

Yes, we were beaten by City away this season, as we were last season. It was hardly a surprise. Like us, they will murder teams on their day if the circumstances encourage it.

And we've got several top players to come into this team, and several who will grow in confidence and effectiveness.

There are undeniable problems to deal with. There are some urgent lessons to be learnt. But forget Suarez and concentrate on who is there. There's no need for fatalism or panic. The manager and the team has earnt quite a bit of faith and patience.

I agree with all that, but the name Suarez came up 5 times in this thread (before my post) and three of those were in your post!

Coutinho isn't a wide man. Play him centrally or not at all.

I'm also not convinced about Sturridge by himself. I'd probably start Balotelli with the diamond on Sunday.

I'm surprised how cautious Rodgers has been so far this season. Our strength has been, and probably always will be, going forward, and once again I felt we had one too few attackers on the pitch. I'd have exchanged one of the midfielders for Coutinho and played Markovic in the front 3. We'd have had less possession but been much more dangerous in their final third.

Watched the game - and my conclusion is that BR has some of his own issues to sort out more than the team do. It was never going to be simple by introducing some newbee into the back 4. I thought Moreno had a great game except for that 2 seconds of not paying attention which led to the first goal. He showed he is more than capable of getting past the last man, and into dangerous areas, and has pace to burn - there are not going to be many in opposition teams who can beat him on pace.

Coutinho - well if he is the 'brains' of our team then we have a problem because that brain seems half a sleep; sometimes like tonight's game you can see why Inter sold him for £7/8M. I think we don't actually need to start with him in the team - we are better starting with Lambert to support Sturridge, because in last weeks game it was not until he came on to support Sturridge that we had something going up front.

Sturridge was good when he started putting it on against them towards the last 15 minutes - but was getting 'bullied' out of the game. Markovic had a few good touches but from what I saw - he is not going to do much tracking back with any intensity.

Now Mr. BR - I know you want us to win and attack every game, but really a good result would have been draw today and yes even 0-0. We went there knowing we were going to struggle with all the new players, and this was not the game to be brave. It is something BR should have picked up from Jose - don't pick fights you cannot win, sometimes you just need to set the team up to defend and not concede and take opportunities as they arise in game situations.

City have an established team , who win by effortless play at times - quick/slick call it what you want, but they are the most mature winning team I have seen in this PL for a long time. Even if you compare the likes of Chelsea/Arsenal/Others - they look like a team of seasoned pros against teams with kids in them.

Thought we played well bar the defensive errors. City with 7 shots all game. But 4 on target and 3 goals is just a pisstake.

The night was marred by injuries. Skrtel looked okay, Johnson will be out for weeks (maybe a good thing) and Moreno could miss the Spurs game.

You could see we had 2 new defenders in our back 4. Shame this game comes so early in terms of getting our players bedded in.
Moreno was good, Lovren was good and Markovic looked really promising. Will take a while before everyone gels mind.

Shite result but after Johnson went off injured it was just ridiculous.

Third goal?

I couldn't give anyone praise after that. It was pathetic.

At this early stage in the season, im more concerned about the weaklinks in the starting eleven in terms of players.

After the first game we improved on Lucas. Now we need to look at Johnson's position. The good thing is we have some options there, but they are largely untested. Here is hoping that it all works out.

The next obvious position in terms of improvement scope is the one our Captain plays. Im not sure how Rodgers will force change there....

Lambert needs to get his head together fast and stop acting like he's a starstruck fan.

If he's going to get 15 mins at the end of a game regularly to make a difference he needs to put himself about and do what he's good - leathering the fucking ball into the net.

That lay-off when we were 3-1 and tails up was embarrassing.

Dunno where to put this but the defending for the third goal was pathetic. City scored from three passes. Aguero didn't have to do much bar run off our CB. Nice touch and an easy finish but Mingolet showed him the whole front post. 23 seconds he was on the pitch. 23 Fucking seconds.

It was truly abysmal. Just awful from Lovren.

My take on Lovren for a while has been that he needs to come in and organise the defence, be the leader. Be what Carragher was for his last few seasons. If he can do that he'll be a good signing. But as for actually being a top class centre half in his own right? I don't really see that happening.
