Alright SCMer's - My lack of knowledge regarding any footballer not related to LFC is pretty well known. A good case can be made for any player who actually plays for us as well. Still I heard this rumour on the grapevine (Twitter, BBC) that this dude is nailed on to come over on loan in January. He has a suitably cool name. Anyone fancy giving me the lowdown on whether he is any good or not.

Cheers all.

"Seven of Cristian Tello's ten career league goals have been scored away from the Nou Camp." - Opta

I've watched him a fair bit, and I'm not overly impressed. He's a tricky, fairly nippy winger come forward (normally plays on the left). He on occasion looks wonderfully gifted, but those times are pretty rare, most of time he looks like a poor man's sterling. His final ball is woeful and his finishing is very poor usually. He spends a lot of his time getting screamed at by messi and sanchez for not making the easy pass for a tap in.
For me, he'd sit somewhere between moses and sterling. But there's no way I'd have him in the team over sterling, and maybe even Ibe. And he's not as highly thought of at Barca as deulofeu.

*must resist urge to start quoting lyrics with the word "hello" replaced with "Tello"*

No I do....

"Tello.... Is it me you're looking for..."

Tello I love you, won't you tell me your name...

Tello Tello, ola
I'm in a place called vertigo

Echo:

[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/mohamed-salah-transfer-latest-liverpool-6458058]Meanwhile, Liverpool have dismissed reports in Spain that Barcelona winger Cristian Tello will be heading to Anfield on loan for the rest of the season.

Tello, who rejected the chance to join the Reds on a season-long loan in the summer of 2012, has found his opportunities limited under Gerardo Martino this term.

That has led to speculation that the 22-year-old could move on in January.

Liverpool did enquire about his availability but they are now looking at other options.[/article]

That's quite an odd summary in parts.

Firstly, what is a poor mans Sterling? I'm not quite sure any of us know what a good Sterling is seeing as it's quite early doors for him.

Secondly, I think your description is some way off the mark. When I've watched him play (a fair amount) he is usually quite deferential. He's got lightning pace (haven't seen a whole lot of evidence of trickery) and his finishing has at times been brilliant. Very Henry-esque coming in off that left hand side.

Not that it matters seeing as the Echo have dismissed the rumour but he would've been a much better loan signing than Moses and given us a lot more goal threat on the counter attack.

I will agree that he is inconsistent. It's too early to tell whether he can take his game to the next level or will simply end up as another Babel type player. He hasn't helped his cause much by ending up rooted to the Nou Camp bench though and if you had to gamble based on the current trajectory of his career you'd have to say Babel (unless his situation changes very soon and he makes the most of that change).

Thanks Keni - Good to get a bit of perspective. Happy New year to you by the way. 🙂

I saw him play live vs Real Zaragoza, ok a poor side and Barca had half a team out, but he looked really good. Great movement off the ball, scored two. I came away thinking he and Xavi were the stand-outs on the day (I didn't know we had an interest in him at the time).
La Romereda is quite small and I had a good ticket so saw he from from very close quarters in the first half.

Nice one thanks.

Tello, my friend, Tello
Just called to let you know
I think about you ev'ry night
And I know it's late
But I couldn't wait

[article=http://www.marca.com/2014/01/04/en/football/barcelona/1388829891.html]Cristian Tello will not be leaving Barcelona in this winter market window. Despite the interest of various clubs to sign the player - be it buying him outright or having him on loan - Barça has answered with a categorical "no". The higher-ups at the Camp Nou are deaf to all offers for the winger, as they will be counting on his services at least until the end of the season.

Tata Martino doesn't want to run the risk of being left high and dry through having players out injured. He already suffered such a situation last December, when he had so many men out for the count that he was forced to take on forwards Adama and Dongou from the B team.

With this precarious experience still fresh in their minds, they have told the player that there is no possibility of him leaving this January in spite of the interest of such clubs as Liverpool and Valencia. Tello had made it known a few weeks ago that he was not happy with the precious few minutes of play that he was getting this season.

In the Barça team there are two untouchable positions up front – Messi's and Neymar's. The third one is fought for by Alexis, Pedro, Cesc and Tello. And it's quite clear that of the four, Tello is the least valued. A situation that he is fed up with, leading him to look for a way out. Unfortunately, he has now found that the door is locked shut.[/article]

Speaking about young Barcelona players… Just watched Real Madrid-Celta. Thiago Alcantara's 20-year old brother Rafinha, who is on loan at Celta from Barca, looked great. A very intelligent left-footed AM. The team from Vigo outplayed sleepy-looking Real for most of the match – they just couldn't finish. Real's class told in the end and they won 3:0.
