Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

Yeah this lady was kinda freaked out about how easy it was to get to the forbidden shit. She's both an global expert in virology and had a son with MRSA that took ages to sort, so she wrote this really happy book about the history of and the future of pandemics, and ended up in these wet markets.

Dear Chinese people, stop eating stir-fried snake, bat soup and chop suey rats.

Thanks.

I mean, how hard is it? Every time one of these outbreaks happens it's because someone is eating a monkey, or fucking it or something equally bizarre and repulsive.

Only a small fraction of the Chinese eat ‘exotic’ food. It’s not even popular or mainstream.

I don't know much at all about this stuff but I hear these exotic dinners are normally laid on when someone is showing off, and they've grown in popularity with the wealth boom over the past ten years, in line with China selling the most Louis Vuitton bags etc.

That may apply in a few cases but I'd say that's it's mainly regional traditions. Guangdong province is where the "eat anything that walks, swims or flies" originated. A few of my wife's best friends are extremely rich (as in £ billionaires and I didn't mistake b for m) yet I have never seen them eat anything I wouldn't (don't say a word) ! If anything they are now more Westernised in their tastes.

The demand may also linked to nonsense claims about the health benefits of eating live rat heads, even the chinese herbal medicine market is unreasonably huge. They need to be set straight with more US administered clinical trials on the population, so that the truth reveals itself to them.

Ok a serious post with a bit of humour thrown in

There is no-one who is infected coming to Merseyside
Anyone who shows any symptoms whatsoever will not be allowed on the plane
These are British Citizens being brought home
Liverpool has been at the forefront of tropical medicine and infectious diseases for over 100 years
Merseyside has the best quarantine facilities in the country
This is not a conspiracy
This is not a plot by the Government to kill us all off
This is not a plot by the FA to stop Liverpool winning the league
It is the best and only scenario to bring people home and to keep anything untoward contained
Now share this instead of all the doom and gloom posts

And if you want to know where the quarantine facility is.........

It's Evertons Trophy Room.........Nothing ever gets in there

Wouldn't it be a bit small?

Seems to be ramping up now, upto about 25 thousand that they're disclosing now, up 5k in just one day. Think our government is suspecting that they're going to close their airspace sometime soon hence them telling people to get back now if they can. That would be massive for their economy if they have to do that.

Do you think Israel has anything to do with it?

Coronavirus isn't new, we've had International and local SOP's for a Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus for at least 2 years, and been treating people in quarantine ever since in the Infectious Disease units across the UK.
This is probably a 'shift' rather than 'drift' in that virus, which is no more dangerous but more infectious.
Highly transmissable plus dense population = panic. It's no more virulent or lethal than 'normal' flu.

Where was that clipped from mate ? Some of those figures seem well off according to other sources I've seen (not the Wuhan one which I've seen mostly around 2.4%). I'm also a bit distrustful of someone misspelling The Lancet. 😀

OK found it. The Star, an online magazine in Malaysia.

Ok China may have under reported on cases and death. Surely 20 countries outside China did not mask their data? International conspiracy? Popcorn.

If something like the Ebola virus mutates so that it's as contagious as the flu then we really are fucked.

Then even I will be worried.

Here's stage one of the conspiracy:

This coronovirus is most likely man made.

As I pointed out earlier at the same time as this a Harvard professor working for a Lab investigating viruses like coronovirus is up on charges in the USA at present.

I can't imagine there's much of a leap between Harvard and Israel.

Highly highly unlikely.

“One of the biggest takeaway messages [from the viral sequences] is that there was a single introduction into humans and then human-to-human spread,” says Trevor Bedford, a bioinformatics specialist at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The role of Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China, in spreading 2019-nCoV remains murky, though such sequencing, combined with sampling the market’s environment for the presence of the virus, is clarifying that it indeed had an important early role in amplifying the outbreak. The viral sequences, most researchers say, also knock down the idea the pathogen came from a virology institute in Wuhan.

The rapidly spreading virus has closed schools in Knoxville, Tenn., cut blood donations to dangerous levels in Cleveland and prompted limits on hospital visitors in Wilson, N.C. More ominously, it has infected as many as 26 million people in the United States in just four months, killing up to 25,000 so far.
In other words, a difficult but not extraordinary flu season in the United States,
the kind most people shrug off each winter or handle with rest, fluids and pain relievers if they contract the illness.
But this year, a new coronavirus from China has focused attention on diseases that can sweep through an entire population, rattling the public despite the current magnitude of the threat. Clearly, the flu poses the bigger and more pressing peril; a handful of cases of the new respiratory illness have been reported in the United States, none of them fatal or apparently even life-threatening.

And all the international conspiricists are focusing on are the China and the new virus as mild as the US annual flu. They are all racists, so into China and Chinese bashing.

Later the article states they have no idea where the virus came from.

So you're just being one the sheeple. Well done.

Strong evidence suggests the marketplace played an early role in spreading 2019-nCoV, but whether it was the origin of the outbreak remains uncertain. Many of the initially confirmed 2019-nCoV cases—27 of the first 41 in one report, 26 of 47 in another—were connected to the Wuhan market, but up to 45%, including the earliest handful, were not. This raises the possibility that the initial jump into people happened elsewhere.

And also contains the following :

Earlier this week, Ebright questioned the accuracy of Bedford’s calculation that there are at least 25 years of evolutionary distance between RaTG13—the virus held in the Wuhan virology institute—and 2019-nCoV, arguing that the mutation rate may have been different as it passed through different hosts before humans. Ebright tells ScienceInsider that the 2019-nCoV data are “consistent with entry into the human population as either a natural accident or a laboratory accident.”

Not knowing where it came from doesn't mean it's man-made. Did I say it must have originated in the seafood market ? No I didn't. I said based on all current evidence it is HIGHLY unlikely to be man-made and your extra quotes do nothing to support your ridiculous assertion.

But hey there are people like you all over the internet - trolls being selective in picking out a sentence or phrase and jumping to inane conclusions without any evidence whatsoever, conclusive or otherwise, to back them up. You find one conspiracy theory, declare the coronovirus is most likely man made and jump all over it. Pathetic. Go back to FES where they will appreciate your 'humour'.

You selectively picked one quote and without a shred of knowledge declared it highly unlikely that it was man made, despite later parts of your article casting serious doubt on that.

Anything is possible you small minded cretin

Anything is possible ... but as stated it is "highly highly unlikely", what is there in that statement that you can't comprehend you thick twat ? That isn't a zero value. Do you need a conjectural percentage so you can get you can get your brain around it and actually put a value on the meaning of 'unlikely' ?

And no they didn't make any suggestions that it was man-made. Only it's origin.

Though on the subject of being man-made:

.... disease ecologist Peter Daszak of the EcoHealth Alliance, dismissed Ebright’s conjecture. “Every time there’s an emerging disease, a new virus, the same story comes out: This is a spillover or the release of an agent or a bioengineered virus,” Daszak says. “It’s just a shame. It seems humans can’t resist controversy and these myths, yet it’s staring us right in the face. There’s this incredible diversity of viruses in wildlife and we’ve just scratched the surface. Within that diversity, there will be some that can infect people and within that group will be some that cause illness.”

No doubt then that it was deliberately released in the wet market. Or maybe not ... someone could have just dropped a lab-made vial of this new virus into someone's soup by accident.

Of the 585 samples tested, 33 were positive for 2019-nCoV and all were in the huge market’s western portion, which is where wildlife were sold. “The positive tests from the wet market are hugely important,” says Edward Holmes, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Sydney who collaborated with the first group to publicly release a 2019-nCoV sequence. “Such a high rate of positive tests would strongly imply that animals in the market played a key role in the emergence of the virus.”
