Meanwhile, another evil cunt...
I think this is a very good example of people encouraged to be outraged without context.
This is a Labour Government - so the same as Victoria, but different from NSW or Federal Government.
From what I can see the people asking for restrictions are Nurses, Doctors and Aboriginal Leaders - which might be important, because the virus seems to impact the Aboriginal community more and it won’t take much for NT Heath service to get overwhelmed.
Again... some context - I think NT is at about 85% vax rate for those eligible - which is a little bit behind other states, with vax rated lower in remote areas and the Aboriginal community.
So this is partly seen as a tool to help Aboriginal leaders get their community more protected - like I said, Aboriginal leaders have been asking for these restrictions for a few weeks now.
NT also had seen very few cases andctheyre spiking.
Also and I think this is worth noting - the NT is an area roughly SIX TIMES the size of the UK... yes.. 6 times... but with a population size of 250k, half of which live in Darwin - so it’s not necessarily the same as introducing restrictions in a urban setting.
Many NT areas are dry areas as well and their are already loads of restrictions around booze in place.
So, you’ve got to factor in who’s at risk, how best to protect them, what medical resources are available and how accessible they are - you get sick out there, calling 000 for an ambulance isn’t going to help.
I’m not saying lockdowns are great - but these Twitter releases are designed to elicit rage from people this doesn’t bother in any way - I’d imagine there are threads full of people asking god to save the poor Australians and urging people to get outraged about something that’s probably not that significant.
I don’t know what the split is, but I’d not be surprised to see this as something that impacts people in remote Aboriginal communities more, and it really does sound like it’s being used as a blunt tool to speed up the vaccinations and protect the most vulnerable.
I don’t think this is even as bad as inept politicians trying to make a bit of political capital either, to be honest.
I also don’t think the passports are set up the same here - you could literally take a screen shot of someone else’s and hold it up on your phone if you really wanted.
I think context and nuance get missed a lot in these days because everyone’s so desperate to be outraged by something.
I also don’t think I’m immune from that too - but I’m trying to take a balanced viewpoint.
