Crete is lovely but I'm not sure I would pick it for a holiday home, it's a bit too far from Athens to go by ferry (think it's about 9 hours) and I wouldn't be annoyed flying. Think if I had to pick an island for a holiday home it would be Naxos. Although I reckon I would go for somewhere on the mainland or Evvoia. Evvoia is an island but it has a bridge as it's very close.
are the islands cheap vacation wise?

You can find decent prices as long as you avoid August, especially the weeks either side of the 15th. Those days you'll be competing with Greeks on holidays as well as tourists.

They sold the apartments? Wha?? I still haven't made it to Rhodes, I really want to go and see the old town and Castle.
Yah - the family owned quite a few apartments in La Juderia (great grandfather was a merchant in Turkey).
Sometime in the 80s, they just decided to sell 'em all for peanuts without telling the kids (and the kids would have bought 'em or taken 'em over).
Understood why they let go of it - but still ... sucks.
My wife's grandfather worked like a dog and bought land with whatever money he had. People told him that the land on the islands was dirt cheap and he should buy some land there and he would reply with "why would I do that?". Then the whole package tourism industry took off...
