Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

Not seen series 3 yet, its ok, it’s pretty well acted but series 2 has a scene where the bloke cuts of his own knob so not been back since. Not yet...
I think I'll have to wait for this pandemic to finish before I'll have the mental fortitude to watch it.

WFH is the norm for the company I work for - I have to book to go into the office - I’m sure they’re saving a fortune in electricity costs.

I don’t get the feeling that entertainment is booming over here - in certain areas. The feeling is that suburban places are doing well, but CBD is still struggling.

Also - people tightening their belts and not going out as much.

The company I work for has actually seen a dip in sales compared to when we were in lockdown this time last year. We expected it.

I’m not hearing of overly crowded pubs and restaurants - but I’m sure some are.

I guess I’ve gone through that many changes in the last few years with regards to work, socialising, living arrangements, etc - I don’t actually know what people are doing these days.
The 'office world' was undergoing modernisation anyway, CV-19 has just accelerated it. Zoom etc., WFH (to lower rents once companies can relocate and rent smaller spaces), flexible 'hot-seating', all of these were already part of the process now however no-one can argue against the bean counters.

People will just find other ways to socialise and spend their free-time. No doubt there will be innovation, in this regard, that will soon become the 'next big thing'. Same way as Tinder has replaced office liasons due to the (in some cases ridiculous) restrictions placed on male-female interactions !

I too think we're fucked and that climate change is going to wreck everything sooner, rather than later.

However, I follow news on climate change quite closely and the rate at which money is being divested from fossil fuels and the development of new green tech has made me a tiny wee bit optimistic. If these developments had happened in the early 90s we maybe would have spared the worst of it.

99% convinced we're doomed.
Another forecast that really surprised me was that although the world population is going to peak around 2050 that is in direct contrast to national population forecasts by the end of the century, where, in many countries, the populations will have halved (Spain 's halved - ditto most of Europe, China below 1B, ditto India, Saudi Arabian & Japanese populations halved) ! The world is going to need automating because there won't be the labour force to maintain current industry.

I haven't seen that. I was reading a bit about it recently for work.

I had a quick google (well, I use Ecosia for general searches these days as they plant a tree with the profits they make) and I don't think I could handle that show just now...
Oh nice. Just changed mine to Ecosia now. Didn't even know Chrome has it listed in their drop down of Search Engine choices.

Yeah, that happened not that long ago.

If I'm being totally honest, it's not as good as google search but for 90% of what you want it's fine. It also is improving gradually. You can always head to another search engine if you're after something more specific.

Fucking hippies!!!!

We should get Dantes on on it - particularly if it doesn’t work properly.

Seeing an absolutely virulent wave in India at the moment. Health system on the verge of collapse. Crematoriums over burdened. Practically every 3rd person I know has it at the moment. Have been sitting locked up at home for a week now. What a fucking time.

Sad to hear mate, stay safe.
Is there any sign of improvement in the future?
What’s the reason for the recent wave? Seemed to be under control back in Jan in kost states.

You know what to do mate. Stay safe.

I'm not sure how India (& sub-continent) could ever have it 'under control' because the lack of strict measures, and vaccinating at a rate to ensure a very high percentage are inoculated very quickly, in never adhered to, especially by the uneducated and very poor who have no option to do whatever it takes to survive. That's where the vaccine shoul dbe going ... but I bet you it's not (Dmishra) ?

It does look like this new Indian variant might be more transmitable, although no proper studies yet.

Nothing to suggest it might evade the vaccines though.

Fuck sake, that sounds horrible.

I'm sick of the entire thing. We're opening up here but I don't know what the point is as infection rates are still high. At least the weather is decent so we can go out where chances of catching it are lower.

The new variant seems to be insanely transmissible. Just to give you an idea, Delhi was reporting about a 100 cases a day in March, about a month ago. Today, we're reporting a whopping 25k a day in Delhi alone, with more than a 100 deaths a day. It's insane. The sheer number of people I know personally who've got it is staggering. 2020 was almost a pleasant year in comparison.

I can't give you a reason as to why this has happened (may be it's the variant), but Modi and his incompetent cronies have fucked up so massively they should be booted out of power into permanent oblivion. Except it's not going to happen. Modi is busy, even today, electioneering in the state of West Bengal, holding massive rallies every day where tens of thousands of unmasked people show up.

Meanwhile, Modi & Co. have also funded and organised the Kumbh Mela, which is a Hindu religious gathering where more than 3.5 million unmasked devotees have turned up. Utter mayhem there of course - thousands of them found positive, and several have died.

Meanwhile, our inoculation program has been a complete disaster. So far, we've vaccinated only about 10% of the population, and only 1% have got the second dose.

Vaccine shortage is a major major issue - one of the big issues being we have only 2 vaccines available in India - AZ and the locally conceived Covaxin. There's been some hesitancy about both - what with AZ's blood clot issues and Covaxin cutting corners (no phase 3 data even yet.). At present manufacturing scale, there's no chance we vaccinate the entire country before the end of 2022 - even that's optimistic. Lot of noise about other vaccines entering the market - we've approved Sputnik V for use, which is likely to be available some time in June. But none of that is going to help us get over the present wave.

As things stand, large parts of the country are struggling with shortage of beds and oxygen, including places like Delhi and Bombay. It's an absolute shambles.

India look good on number of 1st doses, but with a population of 1.4 billion, that's 7.8% of the population. Grim times ahead.

So what Rosco posted last about ‘you’ll be fine’ is absolutely bollocks when there’s 100 deaths a day.

No surprise.

Not sure about strict measures but can’t speak for the whole of sub continent but know a few did follow strict procedures with masks previously etc even if not full on China like standard. Kerala state for e.g. last year was managing itself well throughout last year.
You can only judge whether something is under control ever really between each logical waves as we don’t know of the current numbers in Certain countries will remain so with staged unlocking but hopefully do so with mass vaccination...

Is Modi Indian Trump?
Political suicide not to have the Mela?

Only today has Boris cancelled his visit to India, another joke really when other countries (notably Pakistan) were on the red list and no go while the numbers in India are rampant and allowing people to travel to the UK with another ultra transmissible variant is ridiculous.

Resdemivir and Oxygen were trending on twitter last week as Indians took to Twitter to try and help others out, but again likely those who can afford it should be ok the rest who can't and like you have have to work to survive will struggle hugely.

both my eldest tested + ... eldest got it from some kid in his class, and gave it to the sister ... and now waiting for tests for the youngest two, and us (we got vaccination but need to see).

@dmishra - we found a few people with teh Indian strain here too ...

and now I'm positive ... let's see how this go - Pfizer (and my extra nipple) vs COVID ... Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rumble!

12 (+, no symptoms), 10 (+ on and off again fever, cough, good since Sunday), 6 (+, no symptoms and scored some nice goals today) & 3 (-, NO CLUE HOW - must be the minnie mouse club or something she watches).

I don't even know what that shit is - I'm vaccinated, and I feel ok.
