Chinese "Devil Virus" - anyone worried?

Because they're shit, Chinese, cheap and Xiaomi released a device that had spyware pre-installed that was illegally sending data back to Chinese click-farm databases.

Why the fuck would anyone buy anything electronic from China? Unless they're a fucking idiot.
You do know, many components for the iPhone come from China and South Korea

Samsung too actually

*Rolls eyes*

Have a look round your house.

The majority of your electronics will have components that come from China

Components can be hardwired with spyware, a few mobile phone companies discovered that a couple of years ago. But it is less common. If you install any app or software or buy any finished electronic good from china, you're an idiot. I can't advise strongly enough that you type in the company name of the product you are about to install, and if they were founded in China or have a Chinese CEO, reconsider. Pay more if you have to for the competitor's version, it will be worth it.

I don't know, I'm pretty certain most people would take my advice over yours about almost anything, because you're an idiot.

But despite the fact that the Chinese government has a well-known, widely accepted and long history of lying and espionage, here's a few easily searchable articles about the shitphones that Xiaomi make and the spyware apps they install:

Chinese app on Xi’s ideology allows data access to users’ phones - Washington Post
An app released by the Chinese Communist Party earlier this year has been found to have virtually unlimited access to the data on a user’s Android smartphone—and the consequences are horrifying, reports the Washington Post. The app, called “Study the Great Nation,” was released by the Chinese Communist Party back in January, and by April Chinese state media said it had become the most downloaded app in China, with over 100 million downloads.
The app is essentially a study guide about Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ideology and allows users to read and comment on videos and news articles about his activities, as well as take quizzes based on the information the user has learned and have their results posted to leaderboards.
However, the app has been found to be much more than a simple propaganda tool. The U.S. government-funded Open Technology Fund contracted Germany cybersecurity firm Cure53 to dig into the app’s code to see what was hidden beneath. What Cure53 found is about as Owellian as it gets.
The “Study the Great Nation” app has what’s known as “superuser” access on Android devices. As the Washington Post explains, such status is essentially a free-for-all backdoor for the app’s developers, in this case the Chinese Communist Party, to do and see anything they want to on the user’s phone.

The Redmi 1S was selling like hot cakes in 2014, but Xiaomi was hit by a big controversy at this point. The smartphone in question was found sending users’ personal information to Chinese data centres without their consent.

As for build quality, well, if you want a cheap, slightly shit clone of something better made elsewhere, then yeah, buy Chinese.

To be fair I don't essentially blame companies finding loopholes for 'tax avoidance', I blame governments for having them in, in place in the first place..

You should start by blaming the tax rate itself, and then blame the lack of import tariffs.

Samsung are a South Korean company. What's that got to do with anything?

Unless.....you're mixing up South and North Korea and lumping them in with lying Communist dictatorships like China?

Do you think everyone who voted for Trump is stupid? And everyone who didn't is a very smart person?

Do you think that there's a subset of people who watch trump and then inject themself with with bleach, that aren't 1) trump supporters or 2) stupid? If so, explain.

Don't know where even to start with all that nonsense apart from it's all wrong.
Presume brendan is rocking his british built and designed smartphone.

He said Trump will "kill off his voting base". Which implies they are all stupid enough to inject themselves with bleach.

I don't buy shoddy Chinese cloned products in any category, especially ones that can be installed with spyware.

I don't see how this is controversial. I don't have a Chinese branded watch, TV, or car either.

Yeah, get some components made or assembled there - I don't care where the sweat-shop is - but I want some governance and quality control.

Tim Cook, Apple CEO appeared on TV last night on the Big Night in, saying he will waive royalties on a charity single & will be making a donation to the night.

Let's never forget, that Apple's aggressive tax avoidance has put lives at risk, if not actually contributed to deaths.

His company, by starving this country of the right tax contributions, money that could go directly to the NHS, has arguably made the Covid disaster worse.

How dare this fucking hypocrite speak these twisted words to the British public.

Just pay your fucking taxes.

Apple paid £3.8 million taxes after UK sales of £1.2 billion last year..

You know companies don't pay taxes on sales, right?

The App became the "most downloaded in China". Nothing in the article about it being pre-installed on any of their phones. Piss poor really.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has been called out for spying on personal user data using their smartphones. According to a new report online, the Xiaomi Redmi Note has been found to be sending photos and texts to a server in Beijing. This has further fueled speculations about the Chinese government spying on users overseas through phones made by Chinese manufacturers - digit.in

In 2016 the mobile security firm Krytpowire uncovered Chinese malware on as many as 700 million budget Android devices. Hidden in a benign support app, the pre-installed, third-party software would secretly send full text messages, contact lists, call history, location data, and other sensitive information to a server in Shanghai every 72 hours. The offending company, Shanghai Adups Technology Co., was reportedly using the data to tailor advertising to users; it claimed the app was only intended for the Chinese market and that a small number of America-bound phones were loaded with it due to a glitch. - TheWeek

One of China's largest phone makers had a glaring security flaw pre-installed that hackers could pounce on, researchers said.
On Thursday, Check Point security researchers disclosed a vulnerability with Xiaomi phones, stemming from its preinstalled Guard Provider app - cnet.com

Now, why would such process be hard-coded in such a way if not to spy or steal your private data? Using port 80, the recipients were traced to Forest Eternal Communication of which the owner is CNNIC – the administrative agency responsible for Internet affairs under the Ministry of Information Industry of the People’s Republic of China. It’s a public knowledge that the Chinese government monitors every single bit of information flowing in and out of the country.

Yeah. No thanks

Big D should commence testing upon these scientists who have happily been lapping up his juicy government funding.
They should commence testing on the Big C himself since he is the idiot who keeps standing up there promoting this that and anything else he can think of. Stinks of desperation and trying to cover his ass.

Jesus years ago mate.. and well exaggerated..

Things have moved on considerably since then with security being its main focus

You can now turn off adverts on the device with stock apps, always carry the latest Google security patches, and flash Xiaomi eu rom that does all that 'out of the box'

Let have a look at other markets..

Oh Apple as little as a day ago

But he'd come through the testing unscathed, the clinical researchers would obviously fail to factor in that Big D is different, duly roll out the bleach injections to the rest of the physically inferior population, and kill them all.

What do you think apple do anyway to target is customers with habit advertising, yes you guessed it, collect personal data and trigger advertisements based on your habits..

Something Google have been doing for years

You want a secure device in the android market.. Xiaomi are the way to go..

Nothing touches then in terms of support

You can have a 4-5 year old phone that still getting the latest updates and security patches. Isn't another phone on Android market that compares to this level of support

(1) absolutely go out of your way to avoid chinese software and hardware at all and any cost. I can barely believe this even needs saying.
(2) if you are compromised by poorly designed western software, well fuck you have these things called laws in the west, that you can use to litigate the shit out of the company, good luck trying to do that to michaelsoft bindows. It's that simple.

.......
But despite the fact that the Chinese government has a well-known, widely accepted and long history of lying and espionage ........
And from that statement one can deduce that you believe that none of the USA, UK and, whilst we are at it, virtually every other country in the world, don't have the same long (actually much longer) highly 'distinguished' history of lying and espionage? If you actually believed that then you would belong at a Trump rally.

Oh my god. Thoughts and prayers are all I can offer you.

It's ok when they do it.

Unfortunately that is The Truth.

I have no issues with Xiaomi. They are an excellent brand..

With support from Xiaomi.eu my mi9 is the best phone I've ever had, not just software wise but functionality

Tremendous bit of kit.. And for half the price of its equivalent shoveled out by Samsung
