The game was lost with Johnson (forced) and Balotelli (should have been Lallana) coming on the pitch, our defense went to shit, and our forward play was hindered, I hate to say it, but Henderson really let us down missing that header, he'd be one of the best if he had some composure.

- Emre Can is a player. I love the slick bastard. More machismo dripping off him than Razor Roman. I love his now customary foray up the pitch. He relieves pressure with his big fuck off marauding gallop up the field. You'd need a brick wall to try stop him when he picks up the pace. The wall would be left shaking with a giant Emre Can shaped hole in the middle of it. I love him. His inexperience and naivety in a new position will obviously mean that he makes the odd mistake but I can forgive him for that.

- Fair play to Simon Mingolet for turning a corner. I thought he was dead and buried. Not sure how he picked himself up from rock bottom but he seems a new man. He is confident and dare I say it, commanding.

Can is an absolute monster. I'd love to see him play as DM, He's more mobile and faster than Lucas (who was superb over the 2 legs so I'm not knocking him), better in the air, can really pick a pass and is incredibly powerful when he charges forward (just wish he'd lay it off earlier rather than inevitably losing it in or around their box). Would love to see him go head to head with the likes of Toure, Matic, Wanyama etc.

Ming has been amazing of late - he had credited his improvement to his time on the bench so well down BR for having the guts to drop him.

Lovren should have come on for Sakho. Terrible decision to bring on Johnson.

I was proud of us over the 2 legs, we could, should and deserved to beat them.

Mourinho have a few rather direct digs at Rodgers, could this please be the end of their fucking bromance.

Costa 'stamps' accidental - Mourinho

28 January 2015 Updated 00:16

Diego Costa has been booked nine times in 28 matches but has not been sent off for the club

Diego Costa's alleged stamps during Chelsea's Capital One Cup semi-final win over Liverpool were "absolutely accidental", says boss Jose Mourinho.

Costa trod on Emre Can and Martin Skrtel in a second-leg tie that saw the Londoners progress after extra time.

Mourinho insisted the Blues striker was blameless, claiming he was only "looking to the ball".

But Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said: "He has this edge to him. With Emre Can, that was poor, I felt."

The first-half incident involving Can took place close to the technical area and prompted an angry response from the Liverpool player.

Rodgers felt Costa could have avoided treading on his player.

"He could easily hurdle over the young player and he directs his studs right on to his ankle, which could've been nasty," said the Reds boss.

"Again the one with Martin Skrtel. There's no need to do it. That's the sad thing. He's a top-class player and he's clever enough that the officials don't see it."

If he is banned, the Brazilian-born Spain international would miss Saturday's Premier League clash with second-placed Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

Costa was involved in three of the game's main talking points - he also had a penalty appeal turned down when tripped by Skrtel.

After the match, Mourinho accused an unnamed television pundit of having a "campaign" against his player.

"I think maybe you are already influenced by... I'm going to use a word which put me in trouble but I think this time I cannot be punished to say that there is a campaign on the television with a certain pundit that is saying Diego Costa 'crimes'," said Mourinho. "This guy must be nuts.

"Great campaign. We know how much that pundit loves Chelsea and particularly loves me.

"These guys, they have a very good seat, very good money, no pressure. They are always right. They never lose, they always win, but they have to be fair and they have to be honest.

"Forget it. Let's go to Wembley. Come on. I don't know his name, because when I see him I switch off the television."

Mourinho, who admitted to missing the goal due to a discussion with fourth official Phil Dowd, appeared to be involved in a row on the touchline with Liverpool counterpart Rodgers during a fiery second half.

Mourinho described himself and Rodgers as "very different people".

He added: "He worked in Chelsea in my time for a few years. I don't know if he learned something with me or not. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't.

"I could speak about Skrtel, I don't. He goes to the television, he speaks about [Chelsea keeper Thibaut] Courtois. He forgets [Liverpool keeper Simon] Mignolet. I speak about Courtois and Mignolet.

"He forgets his goalkeeper. I don't forget my goalkeeper, because my goalkeeper helped me to be in the final.

"He is what he is. He is a fantastic manager, but we are different people."

But the Liverpool boss said: "There is no problem. It's a competitive game between two top sides and the chimp comes out every now and then."

Any idea what Mourinho is talking about regard Rodgers not talking about Mignolet?

I haven't seen Rodgers mention Courtois, but I think Mourinho is basically suggesting Brendan claimed Courtois kept them in the game whereas Mignolet was equally busy.

You can shuffle your cards & play as many jokers as you want (lord knows Rodgers has a few jokers to play) but at the end of the day if the cards you're dealt aren't good enough....

The gulf in quality between our attacking midfielders and our strikers is now quite large. And that's even with the relative lack of experience the attacking midfielders have.

Rodgers pointed out the Costa stamps and Mourinho was miffed that he was criticizing his player. So he went at Rodgers by saying that both Courtois and Mignolet did well, suggesting that when he mentioned opponents, he was complimentary while Rodgers was just being bitter / sour.

Mourinho accusing anyone of being bitter, ahahaha.

When Sturridge comes back he's our best player, unfortunately there's only one of him.

Yep. Balotelli has the ability but not the brain, and Origi is still going to be raw. I hope we sell Mario and Fabio in the summer and bring someone of genuine class in.

It sounded like a dig at Rodgers treatment of Mignolet, as if to say that Jose backed his keeper and pointed out what good work he did, Rodgers chose to talk about the Chelsea keeper rather than recognising the good work his own keeper did.

Yeah, Can is quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the team. What Lucas has over him at this point, however, is work-rate. When played at DM Can sometimes let the game pass him by, whereas Lucas is always busy. But he is improving and hopefully will improve further and become one of the great DM/CMs in this league.

It's good to see the ref's abysmal performance is being slated today. I really don't think the standard of refereeing has ever been as bad as this. Oliver completely lost it last night. He always looks like a kid who's suddenly been told to stand in for the proper ref, but yesterday he was painfully bad. The standard approach for a British ref in big games seems to be 'treat any serious foul as not a foul until about 70 minutes, then treat any foul as a serious foul'. But even that seemed to confuse Oliver. And now the hopeless poltroon is going to be given the power to decide whether or not his judgment should be overruled retrospectively!

Sky Sports understands Oliver will be asked by the Football Association on Wednesday whether he or any of his colleagues saw the incident: if the answer is 'no' that will open up the possibility of retrospective punishment.

Under Premier League rules an independent three-man panel assesses video replays before deciding on any action, but League Cup regulations are different and the final decision is the referee's.

That means Oliver would be asked to assess the incident retrospectively. If in his judgement Costa was guilty of a straight red-card offence the Spain forward would be charged with violent conduct.

Costa would have until 6pm the following day to contest the decision, and a hearing would then be fast-tracked. If found guilty he would receive an automatic three-game ban missing the fixtures against City, Aston Villa and Everton. Whatever the outcome, there would be a resolution before the visit of Manuel Pellegrini's men.

I thought the ref did rather well all things considered. He didn't give away a soft penalty. He didn't overreact at any time and started throwing red cards around. He didn't give Hendo a red. He handled the Skertel / Diego incident nicely. The Gerrard/Diego as well.

No stupid offside rulings.

As for the stepping on Can that's on the linesman. He should be the one the see it. Impossible for a ref to catch all details.

It certainly wasn't an easy match to referee. I don't think the lino had a clear view of the stamp on Can. Fatty the fourth official may have but I'm not sure he has the right to intervene.

The more I think about I think the kid did excellent. If he hands Diego the ban he will have done really really well.

I thought the Ref done ok myself.

But we didn't win, so people have to find some sort of reason for that dont they?

Not that I think he did it last night, but have you ever thought the ref done us out of a game?

Or do you think they always get it right?

I think we got our fair share of decisions. No penalty was given for Skrtel's tackle on Costa and Henderson remained on the pitch after a suspect hand ball.

You often post this line of thinking Pete and I don't think it's fair. I think it's okay to comment on the ref's performance without using it as an excuse for losing.

Yes of course we have had bad decisions given against us in the past.

It was a really tough game to Ref last night, there was agro all over the pitch, it was played at breakneck speed. I wouldnt have liked to have done it.

I just didn't think he was too bad. Too many Refs spoil games with Red cards. People pay good money to go and see a game of football and its ruined too often with players getting sent off. He could have easily sent Lucas, Henderson and Costa off. The first Stamp on Can, only Costa knows if he meant that, the second one on Skrtel, I dont think was intentional.

They should have also had a penalty so he actually did us a favour last night.

I just like to wind people up. Just call me Diego.

Has anyone got decent highlights? Trying to track them down for a friend living abroad. Where is good to get them?
Can we unban Modo for ten mins? He was good for something. 😉
