If you already had several million in the bank though?

Not to mention an off shore bank account in the name of a beloved family pet.

He had his right to leave.

But more importantly English FA would have preferred for him to do this anyway. Having signed a reputed coach for a lot of money, they were left with a hard decision to make as he didn't do anything for England. Yes, England managed to qualify to the knock out stages in all the competitions under him....but they have lost direction. The future looks bleak. There have been coaches who have taken on the national coach job and made far more impact than Capello has, and i'm not speaking only in terms of result. You need to only look at Germany and Spain for examples. It's a good thing Capello took that decision out of their hands, because they weren't going to make it.

Capello treated this job as a paid holiday. England were a joke for the better part of the time he has managed and he has not addressed one issue well. He hasn't managed to replace Terry and Ferdinand well. He hasn't managed to replace Gerrard and Lampard well. He hasn't found a striking partner to Rooney yet. England still don't have any threat on the wings. The later two were problems when he took over, and it hasn't been addressed. The former two were obviously going to be problems as those players were 30+ when he took over, he didn't address them either. I don't know what he has done....

England would have been better off (financially at least) if they had employed Mclaren for the job.

Whoever takes over the job will have to do things from the scratch.

I doubt it'll be that much. If it's Harry, it would cost the FA 6 million in wages, plus the 6 million to get him out of the contract. 12m spent to get an inferior manager... Sounds like something we'd do.

HE WON'T BE PAID SIX MILION POUNDS !

I take Richey's point, but still.

Capello had/has a far more impressive CV.

The FA did not need to compensate anyone for his services, which they will do if Redknapp accepts the job.

Levy will want a fair bit of cash for losing the best Spurs manager in decades.

I just don't see the FA going to that level of salary for Harry.

basically the FA need to kick the euros in to touch (with regards to expectations) and build for the future.
pick players who think will be ready for the world cup and blood them in right now.
get rid of the old guard and invest in youth.

I think England(mainly the media) make way too much of a deal about the captain. I couldn't name the captain of most international teams. The fact that the role of captain for the England team has been elevated so high has led to the this. They need the perfect role model as captain. The role of captain is no longer about football, it's about merchandising and promotion. If it was just about football, I don't see how the FA could step in.

Agreed, but in that case they might as well just appoint David Beckham as captain until he dies but not actually have the inconvenience of having to play him. A bit like a club level when there is an aging club captain who is always injured and someone else actually captains the side on the pitch.

Is the England team that old?

A couple of 30+ players there but not that many

Careful. You could be talking Psycho into the job.

I don't know about being in their right minds but it's a big job with big money to manage the team with players that are always in the news around the world for all sorts of reasons. It's a bandwagon.

There is also the massive expectation to cope with, it needs a man of experience. Pearce is just a stop gap, doubt the players will be anymore than polite to him whilst they wait for the real chief to arrive.

Should the incumbent get it right they'll be famous forever.

I imagine most English coaches that are ambitious would love the chance to become a legend.

do you guys think that modern english footballers who ply their trade at top clubs are more interested in the league than their country?

I'd say the vast majority would prefer to win a World Cup with England than anything else.

But at the same time, I think most of them hate the set up and the media involvement.
