You just know Klopp will turn this kid into something special. Was very impressed with his performance against WBA.

From the U-21s tour in the US:

Great news that he's getting a new contract aswell. Have very high hopes for this lad.

PS Is that a good enough source and link Ross? Or are you gonna ban me from this one aswell like you've done twice in the Summer silly season thread?
I can probably get Neil Jones of the Echo to call you and verify. Just let me know.
Xx

Young enough not to be shoe-horned into one or t'other, I'd wager.

Exactly. Carra was still being moved around across the defence to midfield and back when he was Brannagan's age. He's impressively versatile at this stage, but he'll find his best position soon enough.

He is not a Gerrard that's for sure.

Without European football he will have even less chances to impress or play. Ojo and him should go out on loan, to a BPL club or a championship team trying for promotion. He has no chance otherwise.

Well, he has SOME chance. His versatility would make him an invaluable utility player during a season which, given the high intensity style of play, is going to require a fair bit of reshuffling in spite of the one fewer competition. Brannagan has played well enough at right back, left back, defensive midfielder, right attacking midfielder, left attacking midfielder, and also (in a position I think he loves) behind the front two. I think he'll probably settle into a Ray Houghton-style role, but at the moment don't be surprised if he gets to play quite a bit next season in two or three different positions. I'd rather that, for one season at least, than for him to go down to the Championship and be messed around by yet another manager who seems unsure of why he even asked for him on loan.

He hardly played even with our mass rotation at the end of the season. They need more playing time and that's the main problem facing these promising youngsters, especially in the bigger clubs.

We will be 100% on for a league challenge so he wouldn't see much playing time unless we trim the squad or if he improve tremendously. A few cup games here and there is all he can hope for.

Besides Ibe/Sterling we haven't had a youngster breaking through for more than 10 years? The odds are definitely against him.

Klopp rates him, I don't think he's going on loan. I think his best position is in CM, he's got good playmaking ability actually.

Obviously I don't agree. I don't see where you expect this to go as a discussion. All I can say is wait and see.

How many of our youth/reserves are playing for the England U21s or U19s etc.?

Gomez possibly.
Ojo? Ibe?

Says a lot about the state of our reserves/youth teams.

Well, it's curious, but not just for us but also for most of the bigger clubs. The current England under 19 squad only has one player for us (Ojo - Gomez would also have been in the squad if fit), one for Arsenal, two for Chelski and one for Manchester Utd. So hardly specific to us. The under 21s had two from Chelski, one from Arsenal, one from Man City, none from us or the other mancs.

Like most big clubs, our youth set ups tend to be top heavy with foreign imports, but also it has to do with England managers preferring kids from smaller, often Championship clubs (e.g. Wolves, Fulham, Walsall, Reading, etc), rather than the best of the bigger clubs' kids, simply because those players have gone straight into the first team and are playing proper games, rather than the disgraceful powder-puff nonsense that passes for reserve leagues at the top. I doubt, in term of sheer talent and technique, the under 21s and 19s would overlook so many of our and other bigger clubs' kids, but at the moment they don't have the experience. The greatest indictment is of the league system at this level.

Perhaps those stupid FA proposals to create an extra league division would be a good time to introduce B-teams. Maybe not call them B-teams, something fancy like they do in the Indian IPL would be good. As well as the reserves, it will give English managers a chance to get experience too.

I agree, but what I also meant was that the players we have there are bought. Ibe from Wycombe and Gomez from Charlton.
Dunno if Ojo is a local talent but it does seem that we're lacking in that department.

Yes, it's frustrating. Maybe now Heighway is back with some input that will change a bit, but it's not good enough.

Liverpool sensation Cameron Brannagan wanted by Real Madrid and Barcelona in shock transfer swoop

The 20-year-old wonderkid has been impressing Spanish scouts and could be subject of a shock bidding war between La Liga's juggernauts this summer

Real Madrid and Barcelona are on the trail of Liverpool youngster Cameron Brannagan and could try to lure the midfielder to Spain this summer.

Mirror Football understands that the 20-year-old playmaker first caught the eye of Emilio Butragueño when the two sides met in the UEFA Youth League back in November 2014, with the Madrid executive ordering scouts to follow the playmaker's progress.
The Bernabeu club have been impressed and are thought to be preparing a bid worth a structured £5.5millon plus clauses.
And while it is no certainty that Liverpool would sell, they may be forced to offer Brannagan more first-team football.
Barcelona have been tracking Brannagan for longer than their arch rivals but find themselves financially more restricted.

The Nou Camp club have scouted the Liverpool starlet on at least four occasions in this season's Under-21 Premier League.
Brannagan was brought up in Salford, Manchester, but the Reds spotted him ahead of local club United and signed him to youth terms aged seven.
The midfielder boasts sublime balance, is two-footed and his technique means he is considered one of the best set-piece takers at Liverpool's Melwood training ground.

Brannagan is understood to be both aware of and flattered by the interest of two giants of world football, but has previously turned down attempts from Manchester United to lure him away from Anfield and is happy on Merseyside.
Much is expected to hinge on discussions with the club when a bid arrives.

I'm not sure how genuine this is, but if it's true, it should just highlight how big a talent this kid is.

Had he been playing in Europe, I think he his rep would've been similar to the likes of Tielemans and Neves. England just doesn't rate that style of midfielder highly enough.

I hope he figures majorly in the first team next season.

What type of midfielder is he that isn't rated in England?

Only those that are actually English. And some of our best aren't so I don't think it says an awful lot actually.
