Caice-d'oh!

So to recap:

  • We came late to the Caicedo ‘party’ but ascertained we could bid
  • We spoke to the players “entourage” and got encouragement
  • We proposed terms for the player and were told they were acceptable
  • We bidded the highest in a sealed bids style auction
So we ‘won’ and the player’s club accepted our offer and allowed us to speak directly to the player and to sort out a medical and prep the paperwork

As this point the wheels came off as it seems the player’s “entourage” had simply expected our interest to increase the salary Chelsea were willing to pay, not for us to win.

Separately Chelsea seem to have got themselves into a position they assumed they were getting the player whatever and couldn’t accept they’d lost the auction, after all we are stupid tight wads.

So now it seems the player’s entourage are feeling stupid because they promised their player to Chelsea, Chelsea are pissed because they can’t believe they’ve been financially out muscled by a poorer rival. So now both parties are working together to try to find a solution but the player’s owners don’t give a shit. We have the high ground in that we have an accepted bid and we are pointing to FFP rules to curb Chelsea.

However, plot twist, we are now in a situation in that the player we are promising to pay an English Record fee for doesn’t seem to want to play for us. Further, Chelsea are tying up an over the asking price deal for, what appears to be our backup option.

So we have leverage and Chelsea seem hell bent on spending more money than they are allowed to on two players for the same position.

Can’t wait for tomorrow!

I've been listening to some of the twitter shite today. It is possible that the Chavs are a busted flush and they they don't have the cash to outbid us on Caicedo and or Lavia.

So Chelsea are going to dream up a deal that is over a longer term with a higher proportion of add ones and a bigger sell on % and hope Brighton think it’s worth selling their integrity

What is the end game here though? If he wants to live in London and play for Chelsea is there anything that can be done? The only glimmer of hope surely is that his representatives are pushing Chelsea for the wrong reasons, he comes to his senses and bins them then signs for us.

He wouldn’t be the first player we’ve lost to London, the only difference is Brighton held an auction with a deadline which has created the situation where we ‘won’.

Imo the player and his camp were getting frustrated with the move to Chelsea taking so long and said sure he’d play for Liverpool knowing that whichever club wins an untenable situation will be created at Brighton and they can later declare him to want Chelsea only.

That would require his camp to have more smarts than they are showing but possible I guess

At the end of the day it means there’s money there to go out and sign any players we need.

Failure to do that between now and the end of the window puts the blame squarely at whoever is responsible for identifying targets and then finalising deals.

There is a question around whether the money was available sooner - although I suspect that’s down to the Fabs & Hendo deals.

yea maybe not fully considered but they just wanted to move things forward and get to the magic £100m asap and assumed they’d have their choice of club at that number

So who is to blame for this situation?

Was anyone at LFC responsible for checking whether the player was even interested in joining the club, before they steamed in with such a high offer? Were Brighton aware of the player's wish to go to Chelsea, before agreeing to the deal? Did the player express a wish to join LFC before having his head apparently turned by a suddenly improved wage offer? Have CFC, after weeks of failing to tie up a deal for a player whose 'dream' is to play for them, now panicked at the idea of missing out on him? Who decided to make this offer public, as though the deal was imminent, when clearly it was anything but? Why does this all feel like such a massive letdown?

It seems very likely that Caceido will not be joining LFC, who have now shown their hand to all and sundry following weeks of quibbling over a few million for another of their targets, Lavia. Whoever they pursue now is going to have an (even more) inflated price as selling clubs sense the desperation. Even if they do sign Lavia, how impressed would he now be, knowing that the deal could've been finalised earlier, for a few £m more?

So who is to blame for this situation?

Who’s to blame? Easy.

The player. For being a braindead cunt picking Chelsea over Liverpool.
The agent. For being a greedy cunt who couldn’t give a shit in the best interest of his client.
Chelsea FC. For being plastic cunts and ruining football in this country.
Liverpool FC. For actively and willingly taking part in this fucking scandalous nonsense.
The Media. For giving this shit any air time at all despite not having a fucking clue of the ins and outs.
So called ITK’s like Ornstein Romano Pearce and Joyce for using the LFC name to get fans to turn on one another, turn on owners, turn on the club whilst playing the innocent party.
The internet. For giving everybody else not listed above the platform to show their true colours for what we’re all known to be. A bunch of cunts.

Yeah, let's wait for justice from the footballing bodies. That will address our immediate need for a person to stop someone else from kicking a ball.

Can they seriously allow a club already under active investigation for not adhering to FFP to break the British transfer record? While also overpaying for our back-up option out of spite. Their spending since the takeover has been obscene - and stupid too. Even if they buy Caicedo, they will have exactly zero experienced midfielders in the squad.

Miguel Delaney at The Independent:
[article]Chelsea were still negotiating with Brighton for Moises Caicedo into the early hours of Saturday morning, but the ongoing delay could yet work in Liverpool’s favour in a multi-layered saga that has also seen both clubs also compete for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.

Liverpool went higher than Chelsea in Thursday’s effective auction for Caicedo, bidding £110m, which then saw the Stamford Bridge club go to £55m for Lavia.

Chelsea are trying to do both deals, but there is some skepticism whether they can make the two work under Financial Fair Play without significant sales.

This led to a late offer of players on top of a fee for Caicedo, but Brighton were not interested in any part exchange as of early Saturday morning.

The fluid nature of the situation was illustrated in how Chelsea dropped interest in Leeds United’s Tyler Adams despite the player travelling to London in what was supposed to be a £20m deal.

[…]
Such moves are being made as Brighton prepare to sell Caicedo, and manager Roberto De Zerbi has already confirmed he is now working on his team without the Ecuadorian in his plans.

While the preference from the player’s camp has been to go to Stamford Bridge, and Liverpool do not have a concrete agreement, Caicedo’s main intention is just to play for a top club.

The Anfield club have not pulled out of the deal despite reports. It forms another subplot to Sunday’s meeting between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Can’t see us getting neither, can imagine Boehly hiring a chariot to parade Caicedo around Stamford Bridge pre game. Game is going to be spicey…
