Bye Bye to Away Goals

Another shit decision by suits trying to justify their bloated salaries. More removal of drama. Part of the fabric of European football. Wankers.

Yep. I actually enjoy the away goal rule. It’s part of the European competitions and adds to the thrill. Yay, more shit penalty shootouts to decide big games.

More advantage to the team at home in the second leg, less incentive for the away team to play positive football in the first leg - be like cricket where whoever wins the toss tends to win the game. More penalty shoot-outs. Bad move. It wasn't broken, it didn't need fixing.

But on the plus side, I won't have to explain the permutations to my Dad every time either team scores. He's a bright enough bloke, but has a massive mental block on the away goals rule.

It was introduced in the 60s to compensate for the away travel offset and differences in pitch quality I assume, not sure those issues really exist in CL with millionaire footballers travelling on private jets so guess makes sense.

Would be interesting to know just how many ties we have won on away goals in the last 20 yrs. Can’t think of too many interms of big games immediately, only the Barca one back in 2007 comes to the mind straight away

The added layer of tension and drama it adds to the game is gone. When Gudjohnsen shot across the goal in the 95th minute (you know which one), the reason all of us had a collective heart attack was the away goal rule. Now it is gone.

Why fix something which works so well. Maybe they could have eliminated away goal advantage in the second leg extra time.

Didn’t spuds knock out shitty on away goals?

It makes complete sense. It incentivizes each team to attack. The home team has to capitalize on being at home and the away team needs to score in order to bring the other team back to their stadium for the next segment of play and double the lead before going away again where the pressure and drama are constantly cumulative.

I thought it was introduced to stop teams going away from home and parking the bus for 90 mins playing cynical anti football so they could then take the tie back to their home ground for what would effectively be a 1 off game at home with extra time and penalties if required.

The team who plays the 2nd leg at home has an advantage but it was far more pronounced when their was no away goals rule.

Yes, that’s true in some cases but originally as per wiki:

Originally, the away goal rule was introduced in football as an expedited way of doing away with playoffs or tie breakers on neutral grounds to resolve a logistical, physical and calendar problem when two teams were so closely matched the final score over the two legs remained in absolute parity, which could remain even after a third game tie breaker. The away goals rule is intended to encourage the away team to be more aggressive. In football, at least, it can lead to a nervous first leg: the home team is unwilling to commit large numbers of players to attack less to avoid conceding an away goal, whilst the away team attempts to snatch an away goal to aid them in the second leg. Such tactics arguably make the second leg

Loved away goals. Encourages away teams to attack which is great in knockout football. The last 4-5 years have had some epic CL knockout games, why is anything changing?!

Would you like the back pass rule back?

wtf has that got to do with? Seriously. The back pass is probably the only thing that shower have ever got right...but this away goals shite is exactly that, shite. Just watch football change, again, for the worse.
