Curtis Jones

My view is relatively simplistic but i think they’re quite different and this is useful

Szobo is the best presser in the team. I also think his pace and directness on the ball is lethal on counter attacks. Often fucks up passes though on these.

Jones is much better on the ball (even with his desire to never release the ball by passing or shooting) and is currently showing better end product scoring in tight games.

If we face a low block I’d currently have Jones. If we expect the opposition to attack us or play a high line I’d go Szobo.

I feel he had years of klopp telling him to hold the ball, he's struggling to revert to the carefree attacker he was when he broke through
Then he would be the only midfielder at Liverpool to ever be told by Klopp to do so. And it was evident as years went by under Klopp that he was holding onto the ball less and was becoming a better midfielder. He used to be care-free, sure, but more in the fact that he didn’t care one bit about our quick transition or what runs our other players were making. He’s been improving on that for many years. Under Klopp and Slot.

It's good that there's an argument. Two of the best young midfielders currently playing the game, as shown by our results and position. Not that they both can't improve, they will. I think the work Jones did winning the ball and finding his man just before he scored in such a tight space was more impressive than his finish two seconds later on boxing day, and it's a good job he exists because Szob often looks knackered and is suspended today.

Jones is a funny player to me. Has the ball control and shielding skills of Gini, has that ability to ghost into the box and score like a proper 8 a la Bellingham, and can pass through the eye of the needle. However, he can also ghost through games and not offer much at all. Somehow he seems to have a knack for the big games and makes more of a difference in the bigger games than some. If Slot could make him consistent I'm pretty sure he could be world class, but he equally could be a Grealish type player capable of magic but under delivering too often.

Feels like a big season for him to prove he belongs in the first team as one of the first names in midfield
