Bye bye Sadio

Personality I just think it's something fans and clubs get used to. Fans will always have a bias to power remaining with their clubs, but we have to accept that simply honouring the contract and playing with everything until the end is worthy of some respect.

I just can't really see a shift happening back to the was considered normal. Erikksen died on a football pitch and is now attracting interest from all over, players are extending their careers due to the advancement of medical care, nutrition, and that combined with he reduced physicality of the game and better pitches and the risk of that career ending injury just isn't what it used to be.

It feels like a new landscape era in many ways.
I get that, but I think they'll be looking at the Mbappe deal and thinking they'll have some of that please and it comes with a huge risk. Emre Can was lucky the injury he got in the last 6 months with us wasn't serious. He's not been anything like the same player since, but I think a significant portion of that is the impact Klopp has on getting players to raise their game.
It'll be interesting if FIFA's proposed changes to agent fees come in (cap of 6% of player's wages or 10% of transfer fee), because the caps will mean it's more beneficial for agents to move their players on for decent fees (acting for the selling club) whilst they're in contract, but the players will want to go on a free and get the bigger wages (with agents "only" getting a 6% cut).
And when we talk about "player power", we're really talking about agent power.

However - I didn’t say we’d been done over - I said if our breakpoint was what you suggested, then we had - we don’t know what our breakpoint was. (Given that we announced £42m as our limit, then we probably haven’t gone below our break point).

We did have leverage though - we absolutely did.

I mean, I am only talking about £7m here, but still.

Like I said, if we’ve developed some sort of mutual understanding with BM that we’ll have “soft” negotiations in future, then maybe it was worth it.

It just irks my “Gap” sensibilities a little.

I think our break point was lowered quite a bit when Mane made the comments about wanting a new challenge and then that he only wanted to join Bayern. After that it was probably around 30 mill I reckon.
If that doesnt happen we were probably expecting at least 40.

Just watched the 120 goals compilation and it got me thinking I never really appreciated how good his finishing and goal instincts were from early. Some proper striker goals in there, playing him in a central role after 30 does make a lot of sense

I agree.

I still think we could have squeezed another £5m without scuppering the deal.

I honestly don't get this. He's been a total legend for us. One of THE best ever never mind just our best ever. And he's just playing out his labour contract with us, the same as you or me would do on a fixed term contract (yeah OK he's a footballer but you get the gist). He's entitled to do that and the last thing he's done is down tools, he still puts heart and soul into every game. We have had an absolutely amazing return on investment even if we don't get a penny when he leaves.

He hope he has a fucking amazing season with Diaz, Nunez and Jota and that we smash all goalscoring records ever made.

Unless I'm being whooshed !

Fernando Torres happened, that's all.

I have a huge amount of respect and love for what he achieved here. Will defend his LFC legacy. But at the same time, once a player leaves us, they leave us. In general, my wish for players of other clubs is the same - maximum failure possible.

To me, now that he has left us I am more interested in the narrative of leaving a Klopp team at your own risk. After Coutinho's failure, if Mane's form falls off the cliff at Bayern, that would be ideal for future contract negotiations. Madrid will think twice about the sign-on bonus they will offer Salah. It will help us in our contract extension negotiations for Diaz, Jota, etc as Juve, and Barca wouldn't be queuing up to offer 400k salaries.

Again lot of respect for his commitment during his stay here. But let us be honest, he was here because this was the best gig in Europe for him. Covid meant Madrid, Barca did not have the finances. If Suarez was playing for 2019-2022 LFC, do you think he would be running around biting people to force a move to play under Arteta or lead the line at Barca alongside Memphis Depay? Again love Mane for what he did at LFC. But if he wants to leave, I am not going to get all teary-eyed and hope that he does well at Bayern.

He’s one of the strangest strikers of a football in the modern game isn’t he?

Anyway, what about the goal against Arsenal early in his career for us? Throw in from the right side and he just drives towards goal and slams it in the top corner.

Let’s not forget Bayern are the masters of squeezing juice out of aging wingers, seems Sadio only wanted to go there. That’s a pretty difficult set of circumstances to go milking cash from the buying club in.

Ive mellowed and dont begrudge him his move. His 'exciting news' was cos he knew his replacement was Darwin, who does genuinely excite me!

Think as soon as we signed a replacement and had to sell then it was Bayern who could play hardball. We've pretty much broken even, which is amazing given his big role in our transformation.

£360k a week is hard to turn down at his age. One last, big payoff to build more schools with. I'll miss his song, not that we heard it enough.

Hes never been a clinical striker, he tends to be a hit it as hard as possible kind of finisher.

Mane’s placement tends to be decent for someone who tends to hit as hard as he does.

I mean there’s much much more subtlety compared to, say, Cisse, who tended to hit it hard as well but straight at the keeper usually.

I was talking about Mo mate 😀

It's a tricky one. But I'd rather buy, and be forced to sell, than sell, and be forced to buy.

The last time we did that we made a "physically gifted" striker with no ball control or link up play our record signing.

So why are clubs willing to let players go on a free at the end or in the last year of their contract? It used to be you'd sell them with 2.5 years left.

I'm thinking it's because for these top players, 400K a week over a 4 year contract is what, something like 83M, and they can save a bundle by avoiding those contracts.

So for the economics of Salah, we got Diaz in for what 56K a week, that's savings of 67M approx .for now. Diaz cost 45M plus 15M add ons. Plus his resale value...

Then we get 42M from Bayern for Salah to support this?

Looks like good economics all around.

Buy Diaz -60M (with add ons)
Release Mane +42M
Sell on Diaz (unknown x, but likely positive)
Save Future Mane Salary - 67M (paper savings)

But again, surprised they let it dwindle.

Wonder how long it will take fans to moan that we let him go when we shouldn’t have if we struggle for goals. Even tho half the fans wrote him off not long ago.

As if clubs and agents won't find a way around any 'cap'.

I agree with this. We're increasingly seeing players running down their contracts to move on a free and get big wages. Sooner or later one of them will get a career-ending injury in their last 6 months and end up losing everything, which may give some of the others pause for thought.
But the Mbappe situation this year was a game-changer in that PSG ended up giving him what he would have got from a club signing him for a free, and for the very top-drawer players that looks like being an option now, whereas in the past they either went on a Bosman for that kind of money or they re-signed with their existing club for a bit less money. It needs someone to have their career ended while running down their contract to restore some sense.
I wonder if a bit of manual intervention isn't in order here.

The African Lion - always will be - I mean - to be honest I know we lost the two big prizes this season, but Sadio is the first player that leaves this club completing the full set of club honours that one can achieve having won the League Cup, and FA Cup. There is nothing that needs to be said, but you can't be an LFC fan if you don't have some sadness in your heart that this great player has left us now. However you may feel about it - in my mind he has left playing that central striker position as well as anyone who is a top striker, and also there was a directness to his departure in that we got some payment out of it - being our full transfer+ that we paid for him. You cannot ask more from a player.
