Boxing please

I backed Bellew at 4/1 after listening to Mike Costello's commentary of first round on Radio 5. He seemed taken aback by Bellew's tactics but at the same time, very approving of them. Costello knows boxing!

Winner!

David Lemieux did this to Curtis Stevens a couple of days ago:

Stevens didn't get up for a few minutes - ended up in the hospital.

Don't think there's a more violent pound for pound puncher on the planet than Lemieux today.

He's good, but he got wrecked by Golovkin, I remember that fight and his stupid fucking floppy hair kept getting in his eyes.

Golovkin did indeed wreck him, but that was an atypical fight from him. Fought it technically, using his jab and stayed outside looking for openings, rather than walking through his opponent as he generally does. He said later that it was out of respect for Lemieux's power.

GGG's technique is actually really underrated. His jab is textbook perfect, and his offensive footwork is outstanding.

I think we'll see more of that this weekend when he fights Jacobs, who also has really good power.

Seems another dangerous fight for me this one vs Jacobs. Can't accuse Golovkin of ducking any fights unlike a lot of great fighters of recent years (read mayweather), he just wants to fight the best of whats out there every time. If they can manage to sort this Canelo fight out it will be a massive massive fight, possibly the biggest of the last couple of decades. I know mayweather pacquiao did crazy numbers, but both were well past their prime. Golovkin and Canelo are in theirs and are both devastating punchers.

Canelo's fighting Chavez Jr. at a catch-weight of 165 pounds in May.

No excuses for not fighting Golovkin at 160 after this.

That is of course assuming Golovkin beats Jacobs. Might actually be his toughest fight so far.

Jacobs isn't quite the puncher Lemieux is, but he still has good power (12 consecutive knockouts streak). Plus he has a longer reach, and is quicker than Golovkin.

That said, Golovkin is technically much better. If he plays it patiently, I think he should get a knockout by about round 8.

Golovkin wins narrowly on points. That was very very close. I had that as a draw or a narrow Jacobs victory.

Having said that, just checked the Compubox numbers, and they show Golovkin landed more punches with a better percentage. Also had the 4th round knockdown going for him.

As an aside, Jacobs looked absolutely massive during the fight. In fact, refused to comply with the IBF fight-day weigh-in (which allows a maximum of 10 pounds over the weight class). Golovkin came in at 169 pounds. Rumours are that Jacobs was 190. He easily looked like a light heavyweight out there.

Not surprising then that Golovkin didn't get a knockout, and was a fair bit frustrated at the physicality of the fight.

I just watched this with Bex & she was saying that, I pointed out that Golovkin for me was much more accurate & landed his shots so thought that with the knockdown he'd scrape it.

Yep. I'd love to see a fight between Golovkin and DeGale, if the Canelo fight doesn't pan out.
Golovkin would KO Degale, I'm pretty confident about that. I think Jacobs is similar but technically better than Degale.

That was a great performance from Golovkin imo, the weight difference seemed pretty bloody big to me.

I also agree with the women fighting on the undercard. I find no entertainment in it.
I not only dislike it, I actually hate it simply cos the pundits & commentators talk it up so much.

Watching US based fights you don't see any female boxers on the same cards, so it's clearly not a global viewing demand.

Being the cynical twat that I am, I think it's simply Eddie Hearn (being the slimy cunt that he is) saving cash. Female fighters are paid way less than male & he still gets a full undercard.

I also don't rate the Gallagher gym. He seems to train a lot of nearly men.
I take the opposite view actually. I think they do well to take the fighters they have as far as they do.

They have a good reputation but considering geography & size/stature they have had a decent record.

I'm annoyed there isn't a definitive iconic Scouse boxing gym churning out fighters on a regular basis. We have all the socioeconomic factors that usually mean a conveyor belt of quality boxers come out.

I suspect the 'gang' gym ownership factor plays a part in that though.

I agree that there should be a world class gym in Liverpool.

Gallaghers boxers never seem to make that extra step up. He's had a couple of world champions but they have rarely kept their titles.

It could also be down to Hearn and the cards he puts on. Most of those he promotes get hand picked opponents. Once they can't handpick them they get found out.
