It is easy to see why people might think Trump is lying. He lies a lot. In a sense it is also useful to him that Biden won’t be able to attack him too much while he is ill. I think Biden has now pulled a lot of his attack ads.
Personally I don’t think he is lying about this though. His campaign doesn’t really want to male the election about Covid. He has already embarrassed himself a lot in that regard over the past few months, and what could be more likely to make an election about Covid than one of the candidates actually having it? It also rather undermines his constant claims that it is nothing really worth worrying about and he is on top of it.
Beyond that, the stock exchange tanked after his announcement. He has ALWAYS used the stock exchange as his own personal opinion poll. He needs it to be doing well. If it tanks literally because of him, that is not good.
He also always has an obsession with making himself out to be fit and healthy, while saying his opponents are not. And with good reason actually. Voters don’t tend to like candidates who are sickly. And this close to the election they will remember.
There is also a practical consideration. Trump relies on his big rallies and his debates. Even if he is lying about this, he would still need to avoid the rallies. He hasn't got long in the campaign now and needs all the chances he can get to slag off Biden.
Finally, why would he go to hospital if it was all a lie? That just exposes the situation to more people who could reveal it is a lie, surely? The job would be done by just staying at home. Not going to hospital would also allow him to say that he's so strong he can fight it without medical assistance.
As I say, I can obviously understand why people might think he is making it up but on balance, it doesn't seem likely to me.
