I guess it would take a long time, but it doesn't seem hugely time pressured does it? The election is a good few months before the new President is sworn in.
As I said, I am sure there must be good reasons why it is done how it is done, but you really do have to wonder when (at a casual glance) even the UK seems to do something more efficiently.
