I've always thought part of the reason Rafa received the status he got was down to the state of things when Houllier left - a lot of fans were ready to commit footballing suicide from the despair. Rafa brought with him hope and new dreams of success.

Things are different now because of the mess we're in financially and with the owners. We don't have those same hopes and dreams to look forward to now so it makes Rafa's last year all the worse. I wonder how fondly Houllier would be remembered if he was managing in this sort of situation.

It's interesting that you should put it that way. My view is that fans had a ready made target for their frustration with the owners and that's the main reason why people have been blinded to Rafa's shortcomings. If Ged had been able to blame it all on the owners he probably would have got away with more credit than he has.

In some ways, it's a good time for Rafa to get out. If we had another season with him in charge and it turned out to be like the one just gone, then I'm sure a lot more fans would look upon him less favourably.

Ged stayed too long and two seasons of underachievement meant he doesn't always get the credit he deserved for the good things he did here.
