Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

Jeepers, they really rate him, don't they?

They do. Some of them really hates our guts aswell.

Most fans of other clubs have got one thing right though, we've been living on past memories and victories for to long. That hasnt helped us moving forward.

Strange how so many Liverpool fans dont rate him and wants star names we cant get.
Its a case of always thinking your club is bigger than what it currently is.
Sure, we're a massive club. But a title challenge every 5-6 years doesnt impress most peole these days.

I don't think it is a question of Liverpool fans not rating him as a striker.
They seem to be doubting his suitability to our current playing style or the managers ability/desire to change tactics to suit his qualities as a player

Not true Count. Too many here comparing him to Carroll/Crouch regardless of any perceived lack of suitability.

There may be some like that but there are plenty to counterbalance that by positively adjusting their opinion of him and his suitability to Liverpool the more and more likely he is to sign for us.

Haha! Thats probably true. I also think some have their judgements clouded a bit by watching Villa play under Lambert. Benteke has more to his game than being a target man.

That said, thats my biggest worry aswell. How he'll fit in.
But I dont doubt his quality.

The ECHO understands that Benteke will undergo his medical on Monday after Liverpool triggered the release clause in his contract.

A decision will then be taken about whether the Belgium international flies out to join up with Brendan Rodgers’ squad for the final leg of the tour.

There is a school of thought out there that Benteke has rejected us and wants to join Man Utd and will wait for them to bid. For my sins I have read this on a couple of forums now.

Yeah, saw that. I doubt it though. I think he'll sign for us. According to the Belgian journos, its us and Chelsea who are/were interested. Utd havent spoken to his agent.

lol... I don't think it's a case of that. Like I've said, it's a bit hypocritical that people are accusing Rodgers of a lack of flexibility in his system and approach, but then they are criticising this signing because he doesn't fit our system.

I don't think he's anything like the players he has been brainlessly compared to, and we have enough players around him who have the attributes that it's perceived we need.

Since we're signing him, I'll try to be constructive. Doomsdaying is too depressive.

We need to revert to the diamond to have success with this:

--------Benteke------Firmino
--------------Coutinho
-------Milner--------Henderson
-------------Lucas/Allen

Need to establish very early the roles each one is going to play. Coutinho needs to continue to be a playmaker. If we try to get him to be a pacy wing-forward, he's going to fail miserably. Let him make that no. 10 position his own. Let Firmino be an out and out striker. Let him know that he doesn't have playmaking duties - he's much more important to us off-the-ball.

Benteke also needs to be told that he needs to be a face-the-goal striker for the most part. I don't want him to try and be the pivot he was at Villa. That will get ugly here very quickly - he's not good enough technically for that, and none of our AMs are runners. He needs to try and be like Hasselbaink - use his pace and power to be a single minded goal machine. Make sure he doesn't try and be anything he's not.

And most importantly, Skrtel needs to be told that Benteke isn't a signpost which says 'launch it here'.

Oh, and if we signed a proper holding mid that would go a long way in alleviating the disruption in the style of play that Benteke might cause.

I'll reiterate what I've said since the start. Good player, don't think he's right for us, and we've overpaid

He'll no doubt be amazing now

In all this, you have to feel a bit for Rodgers though.

The owners have potentially hung him out to dry (which is a weird fucking strategy - make up your minds you morons) by giving him exclusive control over the signings.

In all objectivity, Rodgers is a fairly talented young manager. He has two very obvious problems:

1) he's never won anything, and that pressure has increased every year
2) he has an idiotic personality - which obviously doesn't translate into great man-management

His confidence over the last year has gone from sky high to rock bottom, and there's now obvious self-doubt. He's trying to fix things by incorporating conventional English football 'wisdom' into his philosophy. Mix it up. Be more physical and direct. Have a plan B. All pointless cliches.

When what he needs to do is speak less, and continue to have belief in his philosophy. Oh, and incorporate the only bit of footballing wisdom that matters - you win nothing without a DM.

He has HUGE pressure on him to make Benteke work. It's going to be fucking difficult.

The pressure will be huge, no doubt.
Our away fixtures at the start could easily add to that.

We need a good start. As does Benteke.
A Goal and a win against Stoke would help a lot....

He's a bloody idiot though. Full control over transfers, and he decides to make Christian Benteke our no. 1 target *bangs head against wall*.

Dortmund are not in the CL, and have just lost their manager. We should have made Aubameyang our no. 1 target two months ago. 30 million, and he'd have been ours in no time. There's no concrete interest from anyone else either.

He'd have been a guaranteed success here.

That's where I'm at..

The comparisons to Carroll, Lambert & Ballotelli in some instances strengthen that feeling of uncertainty in respect of being able to fit Benteke into a Rodgers type playing style system..

Only time will tell.. We are signing him now, so I will get behind the lad..

Thought the article as rather too defensive-- could almost have been written by one of a legion of Liverpool fans who rave about this lad. Villa fans also rated Downing over Young, by the way, and look what impact each player has gone on to have. I have no doubt that Benteke is a good player for Villa-- that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be a good player for us. He hasn't been particularly outstanding for Belgium who have a reasonably similar style to ours. But is he willing and able to adapt?

By the way, Torres was an outstanding player for us but rather ordinary for pretty much everyone else. And very recently, didn't the skanks pay a king's ransom in a loan fee for Falcao and over £50 million for di Maria. It's whether players fit.

As regards constant references to Andy Carroll, people do him a disservice, just as his detractors are doing to Benteke, when they dismiss his footballing abilities. He wasn't just suited to our style of play and it wasn't his fault we were mad to pay £35 mullion.

Every silly season I read comments about how the players we go after aren't good enough for us, while the superstars (that we also chase) who are good enough simply choose to play elsewhere for a variety of reasons, I see our manager / owner / club get slaughtered for it (often for things beyond their control, like the fact that Liverpool isn't London and that South Americans dream of playing in Spain, not Lancashire) and I thank jeebus that the internet didn't exist when we signed unproven, lesser players from shitty teams in the past... Like Ian Rush. And Alan Hansen. And John Aldridge. And Ronnie Whelan. And Jan Molby. And Steve Nicol. Etc...

Lately, for every Ian Rush there have been five Stewart Downings.
