Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

I can exactly predict how the first half of this season is going to go.

- Rodgers will start with a Coutinho-Benteke-Firmino front three for the most part. Ings and Origi, who fit our style perfectly, will be reduced to frustrating appearances off the bench.

- Half the team (Sakho, Can, Coutinho, Allen, Milner) will try and play the way Rodgers has been telling them to play for the last 2-3 years. Keep the ball on the ground, use speed of thought, skill and movement to break the opposition down. The other half (mostly Skrtel, Henderson and Moreno) will see Benteke as an excuse to frequently lump the ball forward. The attack as a whole will suffer from lack of cohesion. This will in turn put pressure on the midfield (which will continue without a DM) and defence, and we'll continue to leak goals like last season.

- Coutinho will have no runners for his forward passes while Benteke will throw his hands up when he sees no runners picking up his flick-ons. Half this forum (I'm looking especially at @Fabio here) will say this is because Coutinho's game isn't complete enough. He's too much style, too little substance. Doesn't make any runs into the box. Sterling really was a better player. He's good but not good enough for Barca or Brazil yet.

- Firmino will spend all this time wondering whether he should be a runner or whether he should be getting on the ball to try and make the team play. He'll show flashes of brilliance but will ultimately not show the return that we expected. Half the forum will say he's our Lamela.

- Come September, we'll have Sturridge come back. Rodgers will bring in him for a game against Villa (benching Benteke after a 5 game goalless streak). Coutinho, Firmino and Sturridge will produce the best performance of the season. We'll score 4-5. People will hail Firmino as a brilliant attacking talent and berate those who made the Lamela comparisons. Sturridge will get injured the next week putting an end to all the new found optimism.

- Benteke will come back, and continue to produce sporadically. He'll get about 1 in 3/4 - his combination of physical attributes is too good for him to be a complete dud like Mario. Rodgers will continue to persist with him, and by December, he'll have scored about 7 goals. Not a terrible return, which will prompt half the forum to defend him. He works his socks off. It's not his fault we paid 32.5 million for him. It's really the likes of Coutinho and Firmino who've struggled to raise their games.

- Rodgers will sit around why we aren't dicking teams while we'll be sitting in 6th or 7th place. He'll then have to figure out whether to bench Benteke for the more suited Ings or Origi to help scramble a 4th place finish in the second half of the season. Or ask the owners for more funds, or continue to persist with Benteke.

Good times.

We'll play several games with two strikers though.

Lets hope Rodgers knows what he's doing and dmishra is well off.
Cant stand seeing that happen for yet another year.

I reckon we might start with Benteke - Origi up front in August.

Sturridge might just have to wait his chance when he's fit again (here's hoping)...

I hope so.

But I'm afraid that two strikers would just result in a slight variation of what I predicted.

A two striker partnership works when both of them are above-average technically (like Suarez-Sturridge or van Persie-Rooney), or if it's a little and large combination, then the little one should be exceptional technically. Who's going to be Benteke's partner? His technique in build-up play is decidedly average. He has good 'selfish technique' i.e. he's very good at setting himself up for a shot, but in the build-up, he frequently shows heavy touches and poor passes. Ings or Origi wouldn't be the best partners either. They're both better than him technically, but not good enough to carry the ball on their own. They're best suited to be the 'runner' in a two-man attack rather than the creator.

If that's the way things do go, the only funds he'll get from the owners will be those which pay up his contract. I don't think he'll last beyond Christmas if this is how we spend the first half of the season.

No question, but my bet is they'll prefer taking that route to sticking with one which seems not be leading us to where we want to be. There aren't any risk-free options for us in any of this.

Not questioning that. He'd be deservedly sacked if that's the case.

It's just so avoidable that's all. I genuinely think we have a better chance of top 4 with our present squad, than the one we'd have by adding Benteke to it.

And infinitely more so if we signed someone like Pedro instead of Benteke.

Ill accept Bentekkers if we also sign Pedro

Bentekkers

Pedro
Firmino
Coutinho

Henderson
Milner

Thats a delight that is.

If we sign Benteke for 32.5 million, that's the entire Sterling money gone (we only received 35.2 million). Not a chance we sign Pedro.

We WILL also sell
Ballotelli
Borini
Lambert
Enrique
Probably pick 20m up for that lot

We earn fuck loads of TV money and loads if prem league money
We can still afford another Pedro.
X

A 4-2-3-1 with Ibe and Pedro as wingers could potentially work well with Benteke. It would be completely at odds with the way Rodgers has operated throughout his career though. So much so that there's not a chance he'd be able to make it work.

I'm not so sure mate. The fact we're only considered matching the Benteke clause the moment Sterling was sold suggests we're reaching the end of our coppers. We'll do well to sell that lot on to lesser clubs, but fingers crossed. It's essential that we do.

@LFCZA: #LFC have now officially triggered the £32.5 million buyout clause in Christian Benteke’s Aston Villa contract (Tony Barrett, The Times)

FML are we seriously this fucking dumb. He's Balotelli minus the technique and touch. Fuck off. Rodgers should be made to bleed through his eyes for this.

If we're just going to activate his release clause, we might as well get rid of the likes of Balotelli and Lambert first. We'll just be in an even worse position in trying to offload them once clubs see we've already replaced them.

To suggest Benteke is worse than Balotelli is the argument of a fucking scoper.

Balotelli at least was able to hold off defenders and give it to better players with accurate passes. His unsuitability to our team was mitigated by his ability on the ball.

Benteke will be a total disaster. He will take possession away from our best players, and squander it with shots off target.

Hes not fucking awful.
Hes just OK.

Thats what we are signing. An ok player. For 32m

Clyne
Firmino
Milner
Origi
Ings
Benteke
Gomez
Bogdan
For about 35m net.
Not including any more sales.
Its not a BAAAAAAD summer. A lot relies on Firmino not turning out to be shite.

Hahahaha. Fuck off headwand.
