Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

No it'll be Rodgers fault for spunking 32.5 million on a player that doesn't take the team to the next level.

It's a rare opportunity for you to have so much cash to spend on one player. If you can't do it right, just don't do it at all. Delay your spending by another transfer window - you might get better value then.

Getting such a big signing wrong has the potential to set the squad back by at least 2-3 transfer windows.

Wishful thinking.

He could be sacked by the next window.

Lots of sites are running with "Liverpool to activate 32.5 million release clause" within the next few hours.

I'm really not sure about this.

He's not spunking though is he. We needed goals, he's swapped Sterling for Benteke.

Well he's sort of swapping Sterling and all our dross backup strikers, for Firmino and Benteke - which offer much much more goal threat. Hopefully break even off it too.

almost direct swap with sterling. awful.

2 genuine questions:

1) Do you think his combined goals/assist will be more than Sterling's (either last season with us or this season with City?)?

2) Do you think we'll win more games with Benteke in the side than last year with Raheem?

I don't think he's as crap as Caroll, but I'm unsure whether we have the delivery to utilse Benteke in the way that he'd want.

Is it time to start supporting the signing? Is this happening yeah? Not much we can do now but support him and get behind him so. I hope the lads on here backing this signing get to gloat all season long as Benteke bangs them in. Jury is definitely out for me as I didn't want him but he'll get my full support.

This is me. I think he's an excellent player who isn't suited to our style of play. But who knows, maybe he can adapt and we just haven't seen it yet.

I hope the lads backing the signing get to gloat. But we should all back him if signing.

I think its pretty safe to say that if nothing happens at the medical than he'll be our new striker.

We paid to much. At least 7-8 mill.
But some of the comments from our fans are laughable when it comes to his ability.
As for changing the system to accomodate him, it will be interesting to see what Rodgers does.
We've just signed the full back who delivered the most crosses in the league in Clyne.
And we might be playing a lot of games with 2 strikers again.

If he signs he should get our support, even though we've paid to much.

If this comes off then I'll welcome a bit more physicality and directness in our play. We need some presence instead of being dwarf city.

Also, look at it this way, IF we can shift out Lambert, Borini, Mario for say 20mill, he'll have only cost us 12.5mill and the squad is much better off! Winner!

Big if, I can see us possibly getting rid of Lambert, no one wants Mario and Borini, well it seems his Mrs is making all the choices of where his next move should be.

The way people carry on about his pace, you'd think he was slower than Peter Crouch and that we don't have any other quick players to play around him.

People seriously need to get over the failure of Carroll (perma injured and too slow), Lambert (too old and slow) and Mario (too fucking bone idle). They're completely different players to Benteke. Benteke can play the target man role, he can also pick the ball up and run at people, he can score all manner of goals, and in the right team with the right service he'll score a bucket load and link up well with a technically gifted attack. And that doesn't mean cross after cross, cf all the lazy stereotyping that's being bandied around.

We have Coutinho, Firmino, Sturridge, Ibe, Origi, Clyne and to lesser degrees Markovic and Ings who are all quick and skillful players.

It amazes me that the same people who've moaned about a lack of flexibility on Rodgers part re the players he buys and the system he plays, are now crucifying him for buying someone different who might give us something that Sturridge, Origi and Ings won't.

Talk about contradicting yourselves, but like we don't already know that he's on a hiding to nothing.

This. We needed that through all of last season.
Loads of scrappy wins needed in the PL and he'll help us on set pieces and in general with a bit of presence.

He's actually fairly quick ain't he? Not Sturridge quick, but Villa built themselves around rapid counter-attacks in previous seasons, and he was integral to that.

He's got pace aswell yeah.

If he continues his goal return from Villa we cant complain.
Fingers crossed.

We also have two fantastic crossers of the ball in Henderson and Milner.

I think it's great we have a striker who can finally score goals. We didn't have one last season. He'll grind out goals, in games we struggled in.

But I don't think he does the "runs" that our midfielders needs, from what I can see.

I'm concerned about the wads of money we are spending on meh players. I feel like it rarely works out. We need an up and come-er like a Torres, or a Suarez to make this sizzle. And we've got HUGE integration issues on top of last season's integration issues. You just can't put 12 new players in a team over two seasons and win the league

The manager is on borrowed time. The fans and the media are ready to pounce.

There's just no way this ends well. And I'm usually an optimist.

most likely scenario - sadly. We spent a ton of money, and will have a new manager by Christmas. Who may not like all these signings.

Rodgers only hope is a flying start in the league. Otherwise, we've got another season in crisis.

Let me, as someone who's been somewhere between the two schools of thought all along on this, try and be more specific about what my queries are.

I agree that a lot of comments on Benteke here (and to some extent in the media) have really been no more than superficial kneejerks and that there's quite a lot more to his game than some have said. My concerns aren't about his individual skill set but about his ability to fit in with our overall style of play. Rodgers himself has described the approach he wants from his teams as "death by football", involving both the midfield and the front line buzzing around like angry wasps, using possession as quickly as poss.and closing it down equally quickly when the opposition has the ball. My hesitation over buying Benteke - whom I'll support if we sign him - centres on whether he will fit successfully into that pattern of play, with its huge demands on mobility. Perhaps he can, but (a) I'm not sure about that and (b) I'm not aware he's done so previously.

A point here - I think part of the reason we went for Firmino is that he's excellent at those runs in behind the defence. One thing Benteke may be able to do well is create space by occupying defenders, and those spaces may well be exploited by Firmino. So really, he'd be making the runs Coutinho needs, not Benteke.
