Goal 3 gerrard the forward tackling in his own box why?

Brilliant. It's a wonder it took so long.

It's not about mistakes and individual performances its about selection ....again.
Riera should have been playing and we should not have Masher and Lucas playing beside each other in the middle, not at home at least.

of course it is.

goal one;
unforced free kick, header (under no pressure) - own goal

goal two;
unforced corner, unchallenged header - goal

goal three;
rash challenge that was TOTALLY covered by the defender - pen - goal

three goals all avoidable, we scored one goal which would have been enough if we'd defended better.

You need to look at the bigger picture sometimes Neil

I am looking at the big picture. I agree with personally you said should come in but for whatever reason I doubt that is going to happen so the next best thing is to cut out all the unforced errors.

Write that on the blackboard Rafa.

I'm with Spider..

We played very poorly but it was the costly mistakes which turned it from a frustrating draw into an agonising loss.

OK, I've had a look on the forums, and now I'm sure of the right ideas. We must cut out the unforced errors. Remember when I said 'You can afford plenty of unforced errors'? Well, I now realise that I was wrong. We can't afford ANY unforced errors. OK? And the other thing is, if we must defend badly at set pieces, we should do so by man-marking badly rather than zonal marking badly. You see? Those goals don't count. Right, now bring on Bolton!

very funny macca but I think you know full well what I mean by unforced.
for instance if the opposition are cuing up at the back post waiting for a cross and our defender heads into his own net, that can't be helped he had a decision to make and he made it but in the case of lucas' headed own goal, did he need to even head it? did we need to give away half of the free kicks we did?

No, sure, but i just feel this ex post facto advice doesn't help. It's like telling a boxer, 'Remember when you lowered your guard and let that punch get through to your jaw? THAT'S where you went wrong'. I'm not sure why we were so clumsy, but I guess urging them not to be clumsy next time is a gesture.

Lol they certainly know where all their money is going. And all the money they should have been invested in the team this year.
So "they know where the Alonso money has gone" but its still all Rafa's fault. You fucking clown. Oh and for the record, we paid £5m for Aquilani in this window with the rest to come in future instalments based on appearances and performances. I take it you can do the maths and work out that £30m minus £5m is not zero.

As for last night and Spurs, I'm struggling. We are one player worse off and suddenly we've turned shite. Alonso was important but we were not a one man team last year by any stretch.

obviously it's wisdom after the event but it has to be said our defending of set pieces has been all over the place this season, look at the spurs game for instance.

Yes, but the Spurs game saw a good attacking team and a defence that was disrupted by injuries. The Villa game saw one deflected goal, one idiotic penalty and one hopeless bit of defending at a corner. I don't think that's enough to declare that all is rotten in the state of the defence. I look to the next match with curiosity and some anxiety, but I just don't see it's the right time to make generalisations.

I think it's the perfect time to make generalisations Macca, just not about the defence.

It's the team overall that are worrying the hell out of me, we're not even remotely up to speed yet. Probably (hopefully!) Bolton will be Stoke mk2, because they're shite, but everyone needs to pull their fucking finger out quicksharp

There's clearly a bit of transition going on, which is always going to have 'some' effect on the defence.

Johnson and Insua are both being encouraged to attack more, with neither inclined to tuck inside much to shore up the backfour when needed. While we've lost the calming influence of Alonso who would pick up the ball from the back four and keep possession moving forward.

It'll take time but the early signs are a bit worrying.

Well, that's not so much of a generalisation. It's not like saying the defence no longer knows how to mark zonally, or the midfield no longer know how to move the ball about. It's when three very different games are used to make claims about how the team will or won't perform throughout the season that things get absurd.

what pisses me off is the whole "next match" attitude. the players failed, they should be punished dropped and replaced. but he just wipes the slate clean. talks some bullshit about analysing and improving for the next game. and yet here we are five years later still unable to create clear cut chances. how much more analysing does he need to do?
How do you know what he says behind closed doors? How do you know he 'wipes the slate clean'? If analysing a game is 'bullshit,' what would you prefer? Time travel? Prayer? Go-cart bonding sessions? Were you saying at the end of last season 'Here we are after almost five years still unable to create clear cut chances'?
i know that when babel signed, one of the first things he commented on was that there wasnt any coaching on attacking play. so i know behind closed doors benitez talks about tactics and defending and organization. he doesn't talk about ways to score goals. he obviously wipes the slate clean because dossena, lucas, babel, riera, ngog, voronin, plessis all continued to get games while they contributed nothing.

my point was he talks about analysing, but there's no evidence at all that he actually learns from it. we still leave substitutions too late. we still play with one striker when we are 2-0 down. we still pick proven liabilities in important positions. we still concede from set plays. and come on this is me, of course i've been saying that most of last season too when we were drawing game after game for exactly the reasons given above.

We scored more goals than any other team last season.

You're talking fuckin shite.

I am delighted to say that this effort has won monsieurdantes the annual Toblerone Award for Dogged Repetition of Unfounded Claims of ESP. And here to present the award is international recording artiste Sultana!

Well done, monsieurdantes. I know that, behind closed doors, you have many uses for our favourite severely-ridged chocolate bar, so I hope this will give you many joyous moments.
