Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was forced to admit that his side many too many errors in their 3-1 defeat by Aston Villa.

The Reds slumped to their second defeat of the season at Anfield on Monday, with individual mistakes blighting a disappointing contest for the hosts.

The Merseysiders had gone 31 games unbeaten on home soil until they ran into a resolute Villa outfit.

The result leaves Liverpool's title dreams in tatters, with the club having already lost as many games term as they did in the whole of the 2008/09 campaign.

An own goal from Lucas Leiva started a miserable night for them on Monday, before Curtis Davies grabbed a second for Villa seconds before half-time.

Fernando Torres pulled one back for Benitez's men after the break, but an Ashley Young penalty put paid to any hopes the Reds had of staging a dramatic comeback.

Benitez said: "In the first 20 minutes we created plenty of chances and played well. Then we conceded the own goal and started to make more mistakes.

"We have lost and we know we have to improve. I felt we had a chance when Fernando Torres scored, but the penalty finished it. It was a clear penalty.

"We now know that we have to go to Bolton on Saturday and win. Everything could change if we do that, our confidence will improve."

Benitez added: "We were not playing well, and we were up against a team who are excellent on the counter-attack.

"Their keeper (Brad Friedel) made some great saves, but when that happens we just have to make more chances.

"This squad is virtually the same as last season, so I believe it is good enough to mount a title challenge. But we must do more, we must win at Bolton.

"We will have to sit down and analyse every player now, and make sure we do the right things in our next match. But our senior players must take more responsibility."

those senior players have dug us out of the shit more times than anyone. how about some of your asslicking junior players take some responsibility for a change? how does that sound

Well, he isn't making oblique references to not being supported, he isn't deflecting blame. I mean, what can he say. These interviews are rarely worth discussing.

BTW, I virtually have had sex with hundreds of women.

I thought that interview was fair enough. At least he didn't try make excuses.

I agree.

what pisses me off is the whole "next match" attitude. the players failed, they should be punished dropped and replaced. but he just wipes the slate clean. talks some bullshit about analysing and improving for the next game. and yet here we are five years later still unable to create clear cut chances. how much more analysing does he need to do?

Drop the players and replace them with who?
[/quote]

Bring back Le Talec!

Who could Rafa bring on to win a game last night really? Voronin? Ha. Babel? Ha.
Rafa's more to blame than our senior players, we are a match winner / key player down out of our starting 11, and our bench is bollocks.

How do you know what he says behind closed doors? How do you know he 'wipes the slate clean'? If analysing a game is 'bullshit,' what would you prefer? Time travel? Prayer? Go-cart bonding sessions? Were you saying at the end of last season 'Here we are after almost five years still unable to create clear cut chances'?

Yes, Tom and George were probably saying the same thing. Must be very frustrating for them.

I think maybe G&H might be wondering why Rafa spent the Alonso money on a sicknote Italian and maybe he should have spent it on someone that could have contributed in the Spurs/Villa games.

Yes, that's right. They know all about Aquilani. And they certainly know where the 'Alonso money' has gone.

Lol they certainly know where all their money is going. And all the money they should have been invested in the team this year.

Well bringing on Voronin and playing him in midfield didn't help matters either.

I have it on fairly good authority that Voronin 'coped' with the anguish of defeat last night by drinking champagne and puffing his way through a box of ciggies in china town, the fecking idiot.

well if he must persist with gerrard playing off torres for the next game against a team that will again park the bus i would rather see him play jay spearing than that waste of air lucas!!

You know I thought Gerrard was crap last night I do. For the hundreds of fantastic performances he's given us we have to excuse the odd poor game. He was terrible last night, that's for sure but it still shows our glaring reliance on him. If he doesn't play we don't play.

If he get's injured this season we're royally fucked.

Gerrard was injured last year and we coped fairly well.

Perhaps the new court case is playing on his mind?

More likely his groin strain. I wouldn't be surprised if he's being injected before the game. It'd be the same sorry pattern as last season.

Riera for Lucas, with Yossi moving into the middle (his best position) and Stevie moving back into midfield.

It was said at half time, and to my mind makes just as much sense now as it did then

It's not about mistakes and individual performances its about selection ....again.
Riera should have been playing and we should not have Masher and Lucas playing beside each other in the middle, not at home at least.

of course it is.

goal one;
unforced free kick, header (under no pressure) - own goal

goal two;
unforced corner, unchallenged header - goal

goal three;
rash challenge that was TOTALLY covered by the defender - pen - goal

three goals all avoidable, we scored one goal which would have been enough if we'd defended better.

How about u take some responsibility rafa instead of harping on about senior players

Your ability to view the world through the eyes of a child is remarkable. Pity you chose such a stupid child, though.

before anyone brings up 'a defenders job is to defend' because of my attacking fullback comments, we're not talking about someone being caught out of position or being sucked out of positon we are talking bread and butter marking.
