To be fair, there's nothing disrespectful about taking a penalty in a way that increases the likelihood of scoring.

It might look unconventional, but it divided the keeper's attention between two players and it went in.

It's the same as knocking it down the centre. It works if the keeper has dived to the side. Otherwise, it doesn't. Why is it disrespectful?

If it was generally considered a more likely method of scoring a penalty, more teams would do it.

£500. They're now 5/2 to win and will go back out to 3/1 if one of the front 3 gets injured and I should be able to trade the bet for no loss.
That's not too crazy, I suppose. Although I can't say I would ever place such a large bet.

Messi-Neymar-Suarez is the best front 3 of all time I think ... It's not really fair.

When Messi was out, Neymar and Suarez were incredible - they scored all the goals Barca scored and they won almost every game.
the bale, ronaldo, benzema combination has scored just as many goals as the barca front 3 this season.

If Messi wanted to give Suarez a hatrick then he could have given Suarez the ball to take the kick in the first place.

It doesn't matter because it went in but I'm suprised they did it.

As I mentioned in a betting forum post......I put £1,000 into a betfair account many years ago and have since taken out considerably more; I look at the money in my betting account as "ill-gotten gains" and "other people's money" so I don't feel guilty or too bad if a bet loses.

Well, maybe they should but it's a matter of having the balls, nerves and teamwork to do it.

I believe there are about 6 recorded instances* of a Tap Penalty and only 1 (Arsenal) miss. So done properly, there is probably a very high success rate. Probably more than a Paneka.

Anyway, on arrogance, an interesting question is: If you are 6-0 up at the 60th minute, is it more arrogant to keep scoring until you are 12-0, or take off your best strikers?

If your strikers could benefit from a rest, rest them. There's difference between arrogance and managing your squad.

As for the success rate of "tap penalties", the success rate is skewed by the very limited data set, and there's a reason it's limited which is also the same reason they wouldn't have tried it if they were 0-0 in a Real/ Barca derby.

A few years ago my son's U11 team overachieved & got to a local cup final. They were playing the A-team of the top club in the county (they had A, B, C, D teams whereas our lot did well to scrape a starting 11 together), and so the final was, unsurprisingly, very one sided.

With about 10-minutes to go, and winning 5-0, the opposition got a corner and, encouraged by his manager, the goalkeeper went up into the box. I remember our manager, myself & a number of other parents taking offense at that as it was seen as being disrespectful and rubbing or lads' noses in it

That's all

And you would be correct.

Definitely. A man coaching kids that age should never teach kids to be so disrespectful to their opponents.

Yeah, that's pretty shit. However, if it were the other way around (ie they were losing and wanted to get on the scoresheet) I'd have no problem.

The idea of not celebrating individual skill bemuses me. Especially if it works for the team

I'm taking the exterior things out of it. The media, the advertising, pre and post match interviews, etc

I would rather watch a game with players with fantastic skill and control of the ball, than a game filled with cloggers

That's twisting my argument in the most clumsy way possible. Who said anything about cloggers? Did you ever watch the Liverpool of Paisley or Dalglish with Barnes and co at their peak? Cloggers, were they, because they knew how to behave with class as well as skill? I just hate that kind of vainglorious pissing about to embarrass the other side. And as for all this crap about them wanting Suarez to have a hattrick - well, there was an easier way - they could have just let him take the bloody penalty!

Levante has a yearly budget of 12 mill euros.
Barcelona has a budget close to 560 mill euros.

This is the Spanish league and the very reason they do so well in Europe. They have every opportunity to be well rested.

I think they are too soft this year to go all the way though.

Easy there

I wasnt twisting anything you were saying. I was giving my opinion.

And, no I never got the chance to watch the Paisley or Dalglish days, however I'm fairly certain they weren't cloggers

Obviously there are teams that can destroy the opposition fairly easily without the need for showboating. My point was the showboating makes the genius of those teams more apparent.

If Barca had won by 10 goals without that Pen, instead of by 5 with it, would it have been any less humiliating?

If you're clearly so much better than the opposition, I don't see why it's so damming to show it.

Also, it's meant to have been a pass to Neymar (as he and Messi have been practicing it), but Suarez poached it. That makes it even better

In truth they were not so much better than the opposition - I saw the game, it took them a while to break them down (it was 1-1 at half time) and Celta Vigo had a few good chances when they were 2-1 down. The problem was that Celta decided to just go for it - what happened to them could have happened to any team who decide to be less defensive when facing the likes of MSN.

Can I just say watching - Suarez - O man !!! - his willingness and determination is infecting Barca to be better.

Would they have done it at 0-0?
Obviously not, but if they played themselves into the position to be able to do it you can't call it disrespectful. They earned the right to try it and any semi decent team would not have allowed the hottest player in Spain to run in unopposed like that.

Where were the defenders?

So they need to resort to that to 'have fun'? They're thrashing crap teams every other week - that's fun enough for most, without taking the piss out of opponents with stupid tricks. I don't get why people keep watching them, it's like taking the Harlem Globetrotters seriously. Top players, top managers, these days, seem drawn to the least challenging contexts. Winning matches and scoring loads of goals in a league that's generally poor? Managing the clubs that are rich enough to lord it over the rest? It's not something that appeals to me, I'd rather read a book.

So you didn't enjoy Liverpool dominating the 80's?

It always deserves to fail. And I also don't revere all that Cruyff did - he was/is one of the cockiest little twats in the world, albeit one who also played some great matches against genuinely good teams.
He's entitled to be cocky though.

We were winning a game 7-0 last season and I let our keeper take a penalty.

He was delighted.

It made his season.

Just seen some highlights from the game and post match interviews.

Firstly. .. The post match presser....what the fuck! There is a small advertising board that flashes and blocks half of Enriques face. Is that common practice for Barca press conferences ? The same brands that flash on the board are the same ones littered all over the back ground wallpaper. Deep throat marketing. I now hate those brands even more than before.

Then Neymar gets interviewed in the tunnel .. he looks like he's been dressed by one direction, wearing a fucking daft fedora . Next thing... Boom... Alves totally blows him out of the water, rocks up dressed like Will.I.Am.

What a bunch of twats

Jeez Macca - if you can't enjoy watching at least 4 of the greatest players of all time then that's a real pity.

BTW if no-one else has mentioned this and I'm not quiffing ..... Cruyff has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
