Backroom Shake Up.. Marsh & Pascoe gone.. More to come..

Apparently it's Marsh, the goalkeeping coach and a couple of others to be announced. Part of the plans put in place was to bring in a mix of experienced backroom staff and people connected with the clubs past.

Sounds good, not least because Rodgers will now have some more substantial input and challenge from others around him. It'll be interesting to see how he reacts to that.

It would be helpful at least in terms of presence. I've not seen much coaching success from him so far, but he'd carry a bit of moral authority about him.

Indeed. Reminds me of that line from Carra when he was introducing the team on TV before the 2001 FA Cup Final. His spiel included saying what each player's nickname was. When he got to Sami he said: "Erm, 'e 'asn' gorra nickname, we're all skeered of'm!"

Really? FFS.

Yeah, according to Echo:
[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-part-company-first-team-9395064]Goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, though, has survived the review, and will remain with the club.[/article]

He's obviously got pictures of everyone involved with the club doing hookers & coke.

There's no other explanation.

Anyone notice the Echo nowadays is pro 'Liverpool..' and it's opinions and views tend to be unbalanced ? ?

It is like someone at the club tells them what to print...

Achterberg safe? FFS.

Isn't he the dinosaur who Pepe Reina hated working with?

It's taken three damned years for FSG to deal with this. Compare it to when Houllier came. It reflected well on him and the club, because, as a big fan of the club who'd just had the spell with Evans, he was already in a position to choose all of his own staff, but when he decided he wanted to bring in a scouse presence, he left it to Peter Robinson to suggest Thompson. That was a fine sign of self-confidence.

When Rodgers came and made the same decision, he didn't ask anyone. He appointed Mike Marsh. Now Mike had managed the under18s, but Rodgers hadn't seen him do so, so there was no real judgement involved, he just picked him seemingly because he was no threat and could be moulded in his own style and methods. It smacked of insecurity.

Which makes him look worse now that he's basically having someone stronger forced on him. If he'd started like that he'd be so much better off. Now it's more likely there will be friction because people will be looking to whoever is appointed to flex their muscles.

One more reason why you don't appoint inexperienced managers at big clubs.

It's a highly unusual situation, its like if a COO had all of the VPs he appointed beneath him replaced by the board, but wasn't himself fired. Rodgers needs to have a say in these appointments, but they also still need to represent a challenge to him. It could create a very competitive work environment that really works, but as you say, would seem more likely to create an awful one. Also, who would want the job in these conditions? And what sort of contracts are going to be in place, given that there's no clearer indication that Rodgers has half a season to improve on this year?

More importantly, are FSG learning or reacting; are they looking to remove some responsibility from the manager permanently as a conscious decision, or if Rodgers were to go in January, or next year, do they bring in a big manager and accede to their demands to appoint all of the staff around them with little oversight.

What I've learned is that I'd at least look at his wife for free on google image search.

She seems like a normal person btw, so Mignolet might not actually be as dumb as he looks.

Good old Simon speaks four languages and had a degree in Political Science. He does 'look' dumb though with that scrunched up face.

Yes. As for Achterberg, again, very nice bloke, but horribly mediocre. I said elsewhere that I think they should be showing some balls and trusting a home-grown keeper as number two, but if they must go after an experienced reserve, why not do a deal with someone of Cech's stature to come not only as back-up but also as the coach-in-waiting? They can spend all that free time the number two has to earn his badges, work with the kids and eventually become full-time coach.

Bang on, I'd do the same with the defense too.

Pascoe's role is the same as the one Terry McDermott played to umpteen Newcastle managers...sit there is shorts and tell a few jokes in the dressing room. And put the bets on.

Good. How Rodgers feels about it, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

He hasn't got much negotiating credit at this point JJ. This type of move in industry is usually designed to see if the individual will resign negating the need for a golden handshake.

Every time I see Pascoe on the bench I just think back to Phil Neal sat next to Graham Taylor during his England tenure as Manager.
