I don't think we can keep up and as much as I want shiny things, they're just not as shiny as they used to be or as our rivals things. We've a few windows of opportunity in the last 10-15 years or whatever and well, we are where are - wondering whether we can go from 8th to 4th.

I'm not that concerned about our spend as much as our planning going into this season and transfer activity off the back of that - that's been done in various other threads though and many have voiced similar concerns.

The thing that does irk me a little in relation to this thread of discussion however, is that a couple of the players we've sold were big signings in their respective windows and in a way we've never seen the intention behind those signings realized.

I don't know if we're limited by players not willing to come to us (we know that's an issue these days) or work permits or something but have we been as ambitious as we can be?

Was there a possibility to go after an Aguero type as A.Madrid did all those years ago when he was a teenager? Is the money for even that type of player too crazy these days?

I know we'd be competing against the likes of City who just buy up talent and loan them out but maybe we would win out with playing time and a platform to develop.

Am I not alright to be really pissed off our net spend is -£12,000,000 this summer?

United and City are over £100,000,000 ahead of us in players and Chelsea about £70,000,000 ahead of us when they all finished ahead of us. Today Arsenal look to be spending £50,000,000 on 2 players.

I know its not all about the money, but how can we hope to keep up here? They were already better and have invested a lot more than us?

Maybe I just want shiny new things but it seems to me we are allowing the opposition to pull away.
I am really happy that we for once have not spunked money on dubious signings. Under previous managers we use to get huge hoard of average players and habe nothing left in the kitty but now if we need back up at Christmas we have the cash to solve the issue.

I agree with this 100%. We're not in the CL. We would end up spending and over spending on players who were bang average. Let's get into the CL and then we will likely attract more players along with Klopp's reputation helping the decision

Oh. In case my post was confusing, I dont want dubious average players.
I want us to sign really fucking good ones.

Because we have wasted money hand over fist is not a reason to not buy players. Its a reason to sign better players.

I would have liked a DM and a LB and Klopp bid for a LB and DM both unsuccessfully, and I am guessing he didn't see anyone else he liked. He also cited that people in England seem to only care about getting new players in and not worry about existing players and what it would do to their morale. He wants Milner in the team and the LB position allows him to do just that.
Maybe we'll need new players in Jan and we'll have the cash to do it.

Yes, because we are going to get into the CL by not spending on good players.

With all the money sloshing around it wouldn't have made much of a dent on the balance sheet to spend £30-40m on Hector (a.n.other) and a decent CM to tide us over until next season (and of course making the CL would replace that money and make us more attractive to the signings we really want).

I am reasonably happy with the signings we have made and the changes to the squad, we have gone forward: Matip for Skrtel, Mane for Ibe, Karius for Bogdan/Ward, all good or very good improvements. Klovan seems like a decent backup CB and Wijnaldum .. well we'll have to see there, far too early to assess.

I was confident we would make the CL this season, with the Klopp/Buvac management team and solid (no need for the spectacular yet) signings. But as we all know the FB positions and CM are now a major worry. If Milner/Can/Grujic/Wijnaldum don't step up we are fucked for Top 4.

Hopefully whoever it is is better than those three though! (Welcome back!)

Well, we won't know how good/bad they are until they are given the chance to prove themselves.

Like Klopp, I just glad that the transfer window is closed now so that we can focus on the current squad. I don't want us to sign a second or third choice player just to make up the number, who is not much better than the current one. It'll be like Rafa and BR all over again.

We are more than a LB away from Top 4. A long way away.

Buying one or two more wouldn't make much difference. Times have moved on and we are no longer a top 4 contender
