Liverpool are ready to reward young defender Daniel Sanchez Ayala with a new deal, skysports.com understands.

Sanchez Ayala joined Liverpool at the start of 2007/08 campaign after being snapped up from Sevilla.

The 18-year-old is highly rated by the Liverpool coaching staff and has established himself as a regular in the reserves in the last couple of seasons.

Sanchez Ayala has yet to make his first-team debut, but he has featured in Liverpool's first two pre-season friendlies this summer

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is a big admirer of the central defender and is keen to tie him to a new long-term contract.
--------

Is he related to Roberto?

He's not established himself as a regular for the reserves. Rubbish.

x2

Never rated him, seems too slow/clumsy to play in the premiership.

that hasn't stopped a whole host of defenders

He's not related, he has some reputation building to do after being part of poor pairing in the youth cup final, Joe Kennedy was so bad though Roberto would have struggled trying to look good alongside him.

shame.

i have no hope for him then.

He does have a touch of the Roberto's in that it's man or ball that gets past him never both, 9 times out of 10 it's the ball 🙂

I gotta say, amidst all the depression over losing Alonso, and having a disgruntled Mascherano, the fact that we are tying down our teenage 'starlets' to long term deals, in addition to stockfliing the under fucking 12's with unproven Scandanavians is showing some real light at the end of the tunnel and certainly making this one-disasterous summer a positive one.

Completely agree, but Ayala has been less than impressive most of the times I've seen him.

Not sure if this is a double whoosh or an uncaught whoosh.

I think we should give a name to the double whoosh.

Henceforth, the double whoosh shall be called the 'swoosh'

Apologies to Nike.

Bollocks, anyway I stand by what I said.

Are we talking about Roberto Ayala now?

Our Ayala is Spanish and has an Giraffe like neck.

And looks like he's Gary Gillespies lovechild. I can't for the love of God understand why we want to give him a new contract.

He's 18 for fucks sake. Give him some time do develop as a centre-back.

I don't know quite what people expect from a young centre-back at 18, but he's hardly going to look the finished article yet.

Rash, doesn't look comfortable on the ball and slow. He got raped against Arsenal, and to take the step up, you at least need some pace. Thats the most worrying part. So, imho, he won't ever make it.

Maybe you're right, maybe not. But I can't help wondering how impressive Sami Hyypia looked like at 18?

Well Carragher looks awkward on the ball and has never been blessed with pace either. The lad is 18, let him see how he develops working at Melwood. He may not make it but at least give him time to develop mentally and physically before jumping to conclusions.

As for highlighting that Arsenal game its worth remembering Arsenal probably have the best u18 team anywhere and have the outstanding talent in Wilshere. They finished a good 30 points clear of 2nd place in their league and won the youth cup. They are exceptional and have ripped many teams to shreds.

Maybe, but we have Kelly, San Jose, Wisdom, Mavinga and Sama.
He was a bit part player for the reserves, and doesnt look like he's got "it".
Instead of having 15 players battling it out for a couple of positions, I'd rather focus on a few that could take the step up.

Ayala wouldnt even be in the squad if Agger hadnt struggled with injuries.

you don't need pace if you can read the game.

carra did not look an accomplished centre back until into his mid twenties so judging ayala at eighting is bollocks

Bear in mind that for that Arsenal game he was alongside Joe Kennedy whose idea of defending is to watch any mobile player walk right past him. That basically left Ayala time and time again trying to cover two forwards.

You'd be better off judging him by his performance in the first half against Rapid Vienna where he was alongside someone who can hold their own.

He must have something, otherwise he'd have been shipped out along with Antwi, Kennedy and Huth.
[/quote]

All he's proven is that he isn't beyond salvation yet.
