How come nobody remembers the dreadful displays that Arbeloa was capable of? The way 'Mike Hunt' quacks on about him, you'd think we had sold a cross between Zambrotta, Maldini and Maicon
He's a better left back than Insua and is fitter than Aurelio.

So if we kept him, that's one issue solved.

You forget though Mr.Huntington, that Alvaro wanted to go home to Spain.

So, it's a pointless debate and argument. He wanted to leave, and was sold.

He didn't want to stay though. That is what is wrong with some players today. They feel they have all the power. The old myth implies that you should never hold onto a player that wants to leave. I have seen the Ronaldo *example being branded about before. He wanted to leave, Ferguson said one more year and they won another league. Could we have done the same with Alonso? Should we have dug in our heals? Perhaps but it is all what if's.

*Disclamier : Of course I am not equating Alvaro Arbeloa to C.Ronaldo.

I dislike Rafa's transfer policy cos he likes to spread the budget thin as he tries to solve too many problems in one transfer window.

to be fair I think rafa is a little hampered by needing to sell to buy I think there are several players he would've like have held onto but needed to sell them to raise money for other purchases.

I think he has a wand as a right foot, he certainly can't do anything but stand on it, never have I seen a more one-footed player and JAR took some beating

Have you taken a look out on our right wing anytime lately?
Riera is more one footed than Kuyt andthatsafact.
That may or may not be so, but he isn't a permanent fixture in our team.

I still maintain that none are more one footed than Fabio.

As for Arbeloa, he was adequate, no more, no less.
He arrived as a bit of a surprise , no one knew much about him, but he could cope on either side.
This is all symptomatic of Liverpool over the last couple of years, people are viewing average players as more than they actually are and fighting their corner on the basis of comparison to other average players.

doesn't matter if you are one footballed if you are extremely good with that one foot. maradona was one footed.

I too, am one footballed.

Oh and Maradona was predominately left footed, but pretty – y’know - competent with either.

Why did you feel the need to bring Dirk Kuyt into a debate about Riise? Kuyt is not that one footed anyway and has nothing to do with our LB position so who cares.
Let's not make this thread about Dirk, he has had many of his own.

Gerrard is an example of that, he will go through all sorts of contortions and kicking the ball with the outside of his foot to avoid using his left, but a fantastic player, just imagine how good he would be if he had a better left foot.

Arbeloa was a very good player who was consistently underrated. He wasn't flash or eye-catching but he was a key figure in one of our strongest defensive lines ever, and while he wasn't Glen Johnson, he was capable enough going forward. Sorely missed.

Did he score with his left yesterday?

Speaking of other LBs, i wish we'd picked up Maxwell from Inter.

How much did Barca get him for? €5M?

With their crippling debts, we could pick up Belhadj for a tasty fee.
That would be an ace idea as he is twice as good as Insua.

Talking of skint clubs, I also rate that West Ham lad Valon Behrami

We should buy both
West Ham fans groan whenever his name is read out.
West Ham fans are totally clueless, though

They used to coat Lampard when he played for them
I take it back. I'm thinking of Kovac. He makes Insua accomplished.

Didn't they coat Lampard after he left? Mainly because in an interview after he left he said his greatest moment was scoring against WHU for Chelsea. Before he won anything with them obv.
No he was never that popular, accusations of nepotism, laziness, overeating etc
And he's not exactly popular there now either.

They even have a song for him.

"Ten men couldn't carry, couldn't carry Lampard.
Ten men and their forklift tuck, couldn't carry Lampard - cunt.

Nine men etc etc......."

I actually quite like the Hammers, but as long as they've got somebody on the 'goal of the season' list, West Ham fans don't give a shit about anything else. They're just that sort of club.

I love these discussions:

'If we'd bought Player X for 30M Euro, instead of Player Y & Z for a combined 32M Euro, we'd be top of the League'

It just leaves no room for a counter-argument.

I didn't bring him into it on the back of debating our left back woes. He merely sprung to mind when the mention of one-footedness was brought up 😀
