But it worked when Alonso had Masher, because he chased and pressured everyone around him, allowing Alonso the freedom to play.

Didi and Alonso also worked very well together, and Didi was no terrier (though he had his own very physical way of playing). I don't doubt that you need players who can look after themselves in midfield, and I think we already have them in Can, Henderson and Milner.

A player who can genuinely control the pace of the game unlike Lucas and Allen who're just too timid with the ball will be a welcome addition.

Kondogbia is the type of player we desperately need, plus he is also good on the ball so he's not just a ball winner.

Yeah I agree with that, I was talking more about the idea of neglecting having someone there who can cover ground and do the dirty work, or simply just be positionally sound in the middle and know when to drop and compress the space, like Didi used to do. I think Can do that, so in that sense I agree, we do need a playmaker more, who will sit deep, certainly someone who can pull the strings from that position and read the play. Can has the athleticism to cover ground around a player like that, so it's worth trying.

Lets face it, in the last three seasons we've struggled for spells where teams have literally steamrolled our midfield, so adding a combination of Milner, Can and another can be no bad thing. Certainly what Lucas, Allen and to a lesser extent, Henderson have offered has been a fairly mixed bag of performances in those roles. Allen and Lucas both look like they are the ones under threat now.
