He wasn't very solid. Positionally he was always susceptible.

He didn't play the ball well at all. There were too many times he just hoofed the ball when there were options in front lof him.

He wasn't the fastest either acceleration wise, while his top speed is not terrible, acceleration is what counts in football.

He just wasn't very good. Arbeloa was markedly a better fullback, and he's a much bigger loss than Riise is.

"One of the best fullbacks in Europe"?

Never in a million years.
He did everything a fullback should do. He defended reasonably, give or take the odd blip which most defenders (especially fullbacks) are susceptible to and was an excellent attacker who weighed in with more goals than any defender we've had in the last 20 years.

Stop talking bollocks.

riise was rubbish at the end of his career, fucking RUBBISH. that own goal was just the icing on a very large cake.

No problem talking football, but not with someone who thinks Arbeloa was better that Riise. At right back maybe. At left back no way

That is what happens when you get more obsessed with what the paper says about your game than how you actually perform in the game.

He actually launched himself as Norway answer for CM at that time.... Because if you play left back at Liverpool you are probably an international central midfielder. Rubbish.

Riise was alright on the ground, but in the air he was a poor defender.

I can't count how many times i saw the ball bounce over his head to see him going floundering after it.

goals are goals but obviously it is easier to find the net the further up the field you play. no question riise was excellent when he first arrived and the manu goal will always stick in the mind.

I did not need to check, because this topic comes up every once in a while (usually courtesy of Spider Neil) and I remember checking it a long time ago.

'As I recall', it was when we found out that we had replaced the useless Riise with a lump of shit.

I don't need to lie, Mike.

I'm actually quite crever.

Never understood the hatred for Insua, at times this season he has been our best player going forward and he is a left back...HA!!!

Of course he hasn't always been a rock in defense but give credit when it is due.
I don't think any one hates him.

He just isn't good enough, like Dossena, Traore and Riise were before him.
Mate, I don't know about you but I put Riise and Insua a full level above Dossena and Traore.
Julian Dicks
Steve Harkness
Manu Insua
Djimi Traore
Fabio Aurelio
Stig Inge Bjornbye
Jim Beglin
Avi Cohen
Steven Warnock

*Weeps*

Considering the success our great team have had over the years it is amazing the lack of talent we have had to endure over the years in one position. We have had 2 great left backs in my lifetime Alec Lindsay and Joey Jones and I have reached the stage now in which I refuse to believe I will ever see even an adequate player in red shirt at left back.

For the record Riise is better than all the above players mentioned but not in the same league as Jones or Lindsay.
My recollection is that Jim Beglin was a good LB, until that bluenose fuck basically ended his career
Nah, he was distinctly average. Dicks, Harkness, Traore and Bjornbye however were 100 times worse than him.

Actually i jst realised that I left Stan Staunton out, he definitely doesn't deserve to be on the long list of shite but also not alongside Jones and Lindsay. He and Riise were decent-enough left backs.

I totally disagree with your assessment of Beglin. Unfortunately his time was cut short by injury, however Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish all seemed to rate him highly
