Bravo old man. Bravo.

A result that was hardly a surprise, but more disappointing because Arsenal were pretty poor themselves, and had we possessed any attacking threat at all, we would have won. Arsenal created more chances and had more efforts

It was difficult to pin down any one "problem area", when it was all of the usual Benitez/ Liverpool failings of this season in a microcosm: no pace, too many shit players, a poor squad, tactical intransigence, a dreadful CM partnership and substitutions made too late. This game really should have featured Babel for far longer than we saw him.

Reina (6). Beaten once, but hardly troubled before that, given that Bender can't shoot.

Carra (n/a) Off injured. Degen (4). Was fucking hopeless.

Agger (6). Tried to bring the ball out a few times, which was nice to see, although he and Skittles let Bendtner free once or twice

Skittles (6). Not back to his very best, but he was one of our better performers on the night and made several superb tackles.

Insua (3). Get this useless, snail-paced fat cunt out of the fucking team Benitez. Now.

Masher (6). Mixed it up with Fabregas and co in the middle of the park and ensured that we denied Arsenal as much possession as they normally enjoy, but got embroiled in one too many skirmishes at times

Lucarse (5). That's one of the better games I've seen him play. Made a few good interceptions and only delivered one suicidal pass to the opposition while in our penalty area, which Arsenal spurned. Still doesn't pass quickly or imaginatively, so what we hav is essentially a slower, weaker, worse version of Mascherano playing five yards away from the real thing. Only an insane person would think that these two are good CM partnership. Unfortunately, that person is our manager.

Kuyt (5). Average game from Hard Work Dirk. He coughed up possession with poor passing too often, and created little danger for the Arsenal defence

Maxi (3). Mogadon in a red shirt. Him and Insua play football in slow motion and watching them trundling aimlessly about on the lflank was pretty heartbreaking. Another typical Benitez signing: one-paced, shit and ill-suited to playing football in the Premiership. Fuck off

Gerrard (5). Better when he dropped deeper to play CM. We look a much better team when we have at least one player who has some pace, skill and passing ability, as opposed to the diabolical Masher/ TIC partnership. Made one great chance for Eggnog, but spent far too long diving and rolling about.

Eggnog (4). The simple fact that we played with one player up front aat Arsenal, and that player was Eggnog, is fucking shameful. Was shit. Again.

Subs:

Babel (7). Did more in 12 minutes than anyone else managed.

I'm guessing that your rating of Insua is based on you're hatred for him. I thought he was pretty good last night.

Agree with the rest though. God we missed Torres last night.

Insua was caught out a lot and lost possession frequently. He was so so in attack at best

Any player that gets nutmegged 3 times in a match (reading) needs fucking off. Insua the chubby buttfucker needs Ditching.

I actually thought lucas had a good game which the highlight being his driving run into the box.

insua is fucking useless. can't stand him.

I thought babel was really good*

but then I always think babel is really good 😉

Insua was our worst player by a mile.
you could 'kind of' forgive his defensive laspes if he was ace in attack but he isn't. poor old aurelio has to watch that useless waste of space take up left back week after week. I dislike insua far more than I dislike lucas.

I think the Skrtel Agger partnership showed signs of promise and offers a bright future.

I don't think N'Gog will EVER be successful as lone striker.

Mascherano and Lucas don't need to be in the same team - it has to one or t'other.

I thought it was a tossup between him and Maxi

I don't agree with some of the comments but I kind of agree with your every rating Brendan.

seriously i thought degen was significantly worse than insua!! He got skined and caught out of position almost at every attack he faced, this lad should be RM at best if rafa is insistent on keeping him!

Degen was our worst player but Insua wasn't far of last night. He simply needs to get rid of these kind of performances if he's going to make the LB position his own.

I think that this is your most incisive post for a while Bren.
I mean we generally know your feelings about most of the players but fair go.

I think that for me, Insua, Maxi, and N'gog were absolute fucking shite.

Essentially our whole left flank and attacking option completely lacks pace, power, and skill - the absolute qualities that define their respective roles.

N'gog was particularly disappointing. He looked like he was running in molasses, and was easily barged off every 50:50 ball. The introduction of Babel made this distinction all the more discernible - but in truth Brendan is spot on. Babel should have replaced N'gog at half time and the formation should have been changed to 442 with Kuyt backing up Babel and Gerrard dropping back as CAM.

Maxi's inclusion for the entire game was fucking ponderous. Riera has looked relatively sharp when he has been given a chance to play. There is no plausible excuse for leaving him on the bench when Maxi was so utterly ineffective.

The same goes for Insua. Aurelio could have been brought in - at least he would not have been skinned so easily by Bendtner.

Carra's injury stopped one of these changes - I get it but Lucas should absolutely not have been subbed in this game. Degen was shockingly shite.

And thus we all suffer another 11 days before we can make amends (or not). Rafa - get to fuck.

Agree on all points, playing as a lone striker is a very difficult task that not many can do well, Torres can do it, no other player in our squad can or should be asked to, its doesnt work, it requires a combination of strength pace skill and hard work that is very rare. Ngog could have a future with us but not in the current system

Mascherano and Lucas is the sort of pairing that should be used only if other players are injured or unavailable, there is no balance, its all perspiration and no inspriation. Lucas wasnt even a starter til this season, what has Rafa seen in the wretched midfield performances of the last 7 months to make him undroppable? Usually when a player comes into the team and they rapidly disimprove its seen as a bad sign

Bren, your rating for Dirk was generous. I thought he was very poor. Certainly not deserving of the same score as Lucas anyway.

I thought most of the lads did well.

Good performances by Mashcherano, Agger, Skrtel and Lucas. Kuyt and N'gog weren't great though.

As for Insua, i know he's still a young'in but i honestly don't see what Rafa sees in him. Complete liability every game.
Aurelio every time for me.

Oh, skrtel was good too.

I like spiders hatred for insua, after his "faster than clichy" stance last season. At least he admits his faux-pas I guess 😉

Yeah he was very solid last night, some vital interceptions and he used the ball well too.

I do rate Skrtel highly, he just needs to cut out the rash challenges and perhaps be a little more aggressive.

Skrtel's got everything you need to be a top class centre half - strength, power, pace and good reading of the game.

He wins most balls in the air. Unfortunately he doesn't direct them very well. He's got a head like a sherriff's badge.
Skittles isn't very good in the air, desafortunadamente
Do you not rate him, Brendy?

Er, I dunno; I like lots about him - or I did last year - but he has had a pretty awful season so far

Thing is, I don't really have a favourite 'type' of defender as a default fall-back (ie the usual blerts bollocking on about Hyypia's pace, or Carra's passing)

My favourite three defenders of the last 20 years have been Hansen, Hyppia, and Carra, who have little in common.

Apart from being brilliant players

Jocky is, in fact, my favourite Liverpool player ever

Jocky's auotbiography is one of the most self-deprecating reads ever.

He basically bangs on for 200 pages about how he was lucky to get a career, couldn't head the ball, couldn't tackle, couldn't kick the ball further than 30 yards, and was a big shithouse when it came to intimidating opponents.

Made me like him even more.

I really did LOL at this.

'Tall, Dark & Hansen'

Greatest footy book title ever

Never read because - as I have stated many times - I have no fucking interest in the opinion of any footballer about anything at all. Including football

However, I think even Jocky has admitted his book was lazy, ghost-written rubbish.

Although he may have been distracted by the dimunitive Irish woman who stalked him around Birkdale for a year or so
