I worried about whether my sort would be accepted in Kyiv.
I won`t tell you that it is 100% safe for black skinned people. But still we have black skinned ukrainian too)) Not much but. We `ve got black skinned tv hosts, singers etc. They are Ukrainians.
I would say that it is 85-90% safe for you if you don`t plan to go to some "not safe" nighborhoods. But I`m sure your are not planning to go there.

You seem to think this is like Paris or fucking Cardiff dude.
Its the fucking Ukraine.
People arent going. If they have a ticket they will, most wont. Its not going to be how you think it is.

For those who think that Ukraine is such a terrible place.
It means that you never been here and don`t know anything about it and what happened here after Maidan.
Now Kyiv is called new Berlin ( even The Guardian (UK) wrote about it) - really cool place to visit.

And here a little bit info about Ukraine (you`ll see the stadium for CL final at this video too)

And don`t look at this crazy hotel prices. Ukrainian Antimonopoly Committee promised to deal with this soon. As it is the most outrageous thing that I ever saw for recent years. Ukraine is very affordable for the foreigners. For example a bottle of beer cost 45 euro cent
So think twice - stay at Liverpool or come to Kyiv 😉

Which one of the Antimonopoly Committees is looking into it mate?

Now I am as happy as a pig in shit. Hopefully they wont add to much CL Final tax on top of that on the day

Thanks mate 🙂

I have to say that Facebook Group created by the Kyiv locals to coordinate hosting the visiting fans has really grown into something special – one of the good qualities of Ukrainian people is their ability to self-organize and build "horizontal" networks and here it's on full display. The group already has almost 4000 members and all kinds of questions are being solved there, not just connecting fans and local hosts, but also things like a social media campaign to punish hotels who jack up prices, appeals to the Kyiv mayor through the journalists who are part of the group, solving problems with Wi-Fi, SIM-cards, transportation, money exchange and everything you can think of. There are already multiple media articles about this in Ukrainian press (including one about my friend who is hosting @Woland) and this is just the first few days.

As it grows and attracts more people of all kinds, I think it will be more and more important for their admins to be vigilant and weed out "commercial enterprises" masquerading as volunteers – I have a sense that at the moment pretty much everyone posting there are still "early adopters" and true volunteers and are almost all legit and trustworthy, but maybe in the last week before the final the % of scammers will be much higher than now, so arranging anything last-minute will be much more risky. If you're looking for accommodation, try to arrange it as early as possible. And always take a look at the social media profile of the person you're thinking of staying with – sometimes it can tell you a lot, even if you don't know the language. If it looks like it's been recently created and has just a few generic photos and no original content – it's a red flag.

Its a great group. Someone posted a long article this morning full of general useful information - transport, currency, bars & dining out, SIM cards etc. Really useful

There is also a post listing all the hotels that have started to cancel early reservations at cheap prices to resell them at higher prices, so everyone can go hammer their TripAdvisor & other ratings.

I did check the facebook of the guy we are staying with and it has a lot of anti Russian imperialist political articles. Apart from being anti Russian interference in Ukraine, it is hard to work out where he fits on the political spectrum - he quotes Lenin (generally OK with me, as a trot, unless he is doing the Stalinist appropriation of Lenin), but then also talks about a Nationalist dictatorship as one option ... I think only to dismiss it, but it is hard to tell in translation. I'm hoping he is a good socialist/anti establishment type, but he may be an ultra right wing organ farmer 🙂

then again I can be over paranoid - I spent hours yesterday procrastinating about whether or not to allow that Reuters journalist interview me, and missed my 30 seconds of fame as a result 🙂

Ok I may may maybe have a ticket. What's my best hope of travel and accommodation? Am willing to pay a fair bit.

Cheers

I read the post in question – definitely nothing to worry about, the quote from Lenin is not in a way of endorsement at all and the mentions of Nationalist dictatorship is a thought experiment that he cites as an example and rejects in favor of a referendum. The basic idea of this quite academic post is to argue in favor of "clean break" with the Russian imperial orbit in favor of closer ties with the West and also copying the examples of Switzerland and Israel when it comes to highly trained civilian self-defense. And that he is not in favor of trying to return the occupied parts of Donbass and Crimea until Ukraine can build a successful and prosperous state within the current de-facto borders.

@peterhague - For accommodation go to the FB group Rurik posted. Anything else (bookings.com, airbnb etc) is just a rip off at this stage and no guarantees

Travel may be difficult - I found using Expedia to source flights to Odessa worked OK (from Manchester). We could then book relatively cheap (£150 return) internal flights to Kiev, or there is a 10 hr train journey for ~£15-20.

Alternatively SportOptions are offering day returns for £950!!!! (https://www.sportoptions.com/index.asp)

Same at https://www.worldchoicesports.co.uk/uefa-champions-league-final

Thomas Cook are doing flights a bit cheaper (if they haven't sold them all), but they will only seel to folks who got an official ticket via the club that links to their fancard & ID ...

Oh - and Woland's mate at Opus (http://www.opus-events.co.uk/) said they are putting packages together. Judging from the email they sent me though, it may be on a corporate jet, in which case costs will be astronomical, but some experience
