Jan's right. JAR's form had been sliding downhill for quite a while before that. The fact that his successors have mostly been pants doesn't change the fact that he himself wasn't the same player any more by that stage.

His form had indeed dropped in the season prior to his departure but surely the right time for him to move on is when we have secured a player who is better than him at playing left back for Liverpool in England.

Certainly so, but I'm sure Rafa thought he had it covered. We all now know how wrong he was, but letting JAR go was a reasonable decision at the time.

Wasn't Dossena supposed to be his cover?
Riise had to be replaced even before that o.g. The problem was we never got a good enough replacement.

Spot on.

And I would add that Riise could have easily bounced back. He had already proven his quality for us over several years.

I hope it was a case of not having the capital available to afford a purchase prior to the Riise sale rather than shitty logic, but it was always going to be a risk and it back-fired spectacularly.

Stevie says in his book that JAR is a right sensitive soul.

His form got progressively worse under "no compliments" Benitez.

Ah, fuck it.

I'm not spending two days arguing the toss.

I'd have JAR back, he had a blip around the age of 28, shit happens. The arguments over Alonso aren't that different, other than he was a few years younger, he had a blip, Rafa tried to toss him aside. Everyone thinks Rafa was wrong about Alonso but right about JAR?

He's only fucking 30, if he was 32 and hit a blip then you could say he was going downhill and the signs were there, he was 28. He's worth a gamble if only for the experience and as an addition to the squad, if we want to buy another left back then fine, but his versatility and experience could be a good asset to the squad, and he loves the club.

Riise has been one of Romas better performers for nearly 2 years now. I'd have him over Taiwo any day of the week.

I do have a soft spot for Johnny Rockets.
So do I, but 30's too old. That boat has sailed now. Let's just buy an ace new LB and remember JAR for all those fantastic goals.

Unless he's willing to be a squaddie, of course. He'd provide more reliable (ie less broken) cover than Aurelio, I suppose.
That's my thinking.

So was Caroll a Comolli signing or a Kenny signing?

A Kennolli signing.

Darren Bent has waded into the Andy Carroll transfer, with Aston Villa's £24 million man insisting Liverpool's £35m outlay was "crazy".

Bent joined Villa in January when the Midlands club waved a huge cheque under the noses of Sunderland. But his deal was eclipsed by Liverpool's signing of Carroll and the subsequent sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea for £50m.

Despite Torres firing blanks early in his Chelsea career, Bent can see the wisdom in splashing the cash for "the best striker in the country". But the purchase of Carroll has left him scratching his head.

"Deadline day was mad," Bent is quoted as saying in The Lying Rag. "More so because of Andy Carroll's move to Liverpool.

"He has played half a season in the Premier League for Newcastle and has gone for £35m, so it is a bit crazy.

"Someone like Fernando Torres is, in my opinion, the best striker in the country and if he goes for £50m you think fair enough."

The fact is that the price was eye-watering to say the least. We've invested in someone we hope and believe can be a top player, rather than someone who has proven themselves yet. That's a fact.

Says Darren Bent who has been overpriced in every move he's been involved in.

Talk about gigantic stones in glass houses

We were also in a tearing hurry thanks to Torres' timing, so we had to make an offer which would blow any possible competition right out of the water.

Let's be honest - Bent is right. I remember a thread a few days before the end of January saying the transfer window had gone mad because Spurs had bid 23m for Carroll. I disagreed with that - I thought 25m would have been a fair price for him - but NOBODY expected him to go for 35m. Financially, it's a huge gamble and we all know it.
