I'll also add anyone who thinks skrtel's grasp of basic defending is better than carra's needs to be carted off to the funny farm asap. yes, everyone one is entitled to their opinion but fucks sake use your eyes before forming one.

Daniel Alves is definitely a much better defender than Carragher, yes.

To be honest, I can't see anybody disagreeing with you there. Look up 'defending' in the dictionary, and Alves' grinning mug would undoubtedly be staring right back at you.

carra was BADLY exposed at international level but he played at right back and was never given a run at center back, also, who cares it's england. for liverpool carra has gone up against the best attacking players in the world and I've only seem him struggle (whilst at center back) against two attackers, henry and drogba.

carra plays with passion, puts his body in the way of shots that would almost certainly result in goals, organises the defense and reads the game. personally I don't get how carra's performances in the rafa era are deemed better than sami's peformances in the gh era (carra rated top 10, whilst sami not even top 20 in the all time liverpool charts which I think is bollox) but he is certainly our best defender currently, but I'm sure that will change when agger adds exprience to his undoubted ability.

also your list of defenders I have to ask if you've seen half them play, for instance ramos is a liability in defense but superb going forwards, definately not a better DEFENDER than carra.
I thought there were 5 (FIVE!) on your list that I rate higher, the rest of the list is nonsense.

He's not only a superb footballer and organiser, but he's also got as good a positional sense and innate sense of timing as any central defender in recent times.

personally I think there should be two types of defenders at center back, a 'player' and a 'blocker' (I'm not using the term 'blocker as a put down btw) i.e. sami and steph/jocky and lawro that's the reason I always advocate the inclusion of agger because he will compliement carra better as skrtel and carra are similar players.

it wasn't a criticism when i said playing above his ability. it's more a recognition of his never say die attitude and that no challenge is too big, kuyt has that same approach. put carra in front of the best attack in the world and he will treat it the same as west brom. ability wise there are other defenders that do things better but as a whole package carra is as good as anyone - there are defenders with better individual attributes such as positional sense (hyypia) passing skills (agger) heading the ball (vidic) etc but as a complete defender he'll do for me.

he's a superb defender no doubt and i'm glad to have him in our team BUT his all out style with his increasing age does mean that we shouldn't be playing him every game next year.

the over defensive nature of some people towards carra though, come on, we analyse everyone else including gerrard and torres so carra isn't immune

Nail on the head. I don't think Carra is a 'superb footballer' but he is a fucking good player. Jockey was a superb footballer, Carra is from a different mould. Effective, but rarely pretty.

I'm just making a general point that there were plenty of occasions over the last 5 years when towards the end of the season people were saying Sami's legs have gone etc. Each time it only took a couple of performances into the next season that Sami proved his detractors wrong.

the big difference is, sami never had pace to lose and reads the game so well he's never really had to make any last ditch tackles. jamie's game is a little different and requires more stamina.
