They are technically and physically more imposing however Carragher offers a lot more than either of these defenders. A natural leader, a communicator, a voice. Out of that list I have picked, only Ferdinand, Lucio and Chiellini are leaders at the back but still don't show that burning desire which Carragher shows. Carragher may not be the best defender, no Liverpool fan will say that but he is key to the Liverpool team.

Skrtel doesn't have the leadership qualities yet which is why he hasn't ousted Carragher yet. If either Agger or Skrtel had a bit of balls and called some of the shots at the back, it could mean Carragher's role may become limited in the future (long term, of course)

there are defenders that are quicker, have better technique, positionally better, stronger, better in the air, leaders but when you put the combination together there are very few defenders that bring more to the table in one package than carra. I personally think the number is less than 5.
