Alisson - New GK?

Watched this guy in action this morning v Inter Milan, game finished 1-1 and he’s the reason Roma didn’t lose.

Made save after save after save!

He’s very quick and has cat like reflexes, he looks confident in goal and judges the situations well.

I’ve seen him play previously but not too much, after seeing him this morning, i’d be more than happy for us to buy him - he’d be a massive upgrade.

The goal he conceded was from a close range header.

Also, looks very comfortable on the ball, doesn’t panic like Mignolet and Karius when put under pressure.

Roma’s goal came from the ball being played back to Alisson, him taking a touch, belting it over the top of the Inter defenders and put El Sharawy through on goal. Didn’t get counted as his assist as the ball ‘skimmed’ off the Inter defender, but that goal was all him.

Yeah, I heard he was ace.

Save more shots than you let in
Rapid decision-making and decent mobility when coming out as "sweeper-keeper"
Distribute quickly and accurately from hands or feet
Organise defence and be vocal.
Be able to catch crosses and dominate in the air
Strong mentality so that letting in one goal doesn't lead to another. Or two more.

We have Eleventy Million Pounds to spend. Tick all of the above. Thankyou.

Man these threads are even better when someone's actually watched 90minutes of the player being discussed.

Some of the passes back to him were really insane though, like that really high bouncing ball near the end - WTF was that? Our defenders know better than to test Mignolet like that.

His style is... a bit unorthodox in some ways, there might be quite a few adjustments he would need to make in the EPL, especially with coming out for crosses, catching technique etc. The good news is that he does look like the type who could make those adjustments and not lose confidence in the process. I actually saw him for thr first time in the friendly against Liverpool in summer 2016 and his confidence and presence were already noticeable even though he probably just arrived in Europe then.

Watching the video makes me think of the Emperor's new clothes story. If that was a Karius performance, half of the people on here would be screaming "clown" at a couple of the passes into trouble. There are a couple of shows of agility, but little to suggest that he is commanding, and one of his saves is poorly directed as a rebound in front of goal.
He may be a decent goalkeeper, but that video shows me little.

I like the way in that video in the first ten seconds he's already done something that would have me out my seat screaming at him for being a useless sack of shit.

So long as I don't watch the video, it doesn't have to have necessarily happened for me yet. If this is the end and we part ways into different universes, it was nice chatting to all of you over the years, and you have my condolences for the years of suffering ahead with your shit version of Alisson.

I watched the Inter v Roma match as well, as you've quite eloquently stated he is a fantastic shot stopper. The issue he has, perhaps a one off game, is that he didn't seem to command his area. There was no pushing other players both attackers nor defenders around and very little direction to his teammates.

I don't think any LFC supporter should demand we sign this or that goalkeeper - he won't be the same person we thought we were getting once we sign him. He will be ruined by us no doubt - we would destroy him, and then he will destroy us by making constant mistakes. Leave the goalkeeping bollox to the club to sort out - not interested, rather we had the shit we currently have than spend anything more than 12M on a goalkeeper. No fucking way.

I dunno why everyone always wants some new one no-ones ever heard of. Some 33 year old with a couple of CLs would be fine.

Why are these 'sweeper style' Brazilian keepers en vogue? They've always been like that and everyone used to call them shite. Can't we target keepers that can save shots and catch crosses?

Roma need to sell players due to not meeting Financial Fair Play requirements.

Selling Dzeko & Palmieri will be sufficient for them to now meet these requirements.

They will not sell Allison this window.

Dzeko (32 I believe) will be sold to Chelsea for 20-25M, along with Palmieri - will also be sold to Chelsea for 20M, who they bought for 400k, but has missed a large chunk of the last 12 months due to a serious knee injury.

Also, there's a real chance Naingolan will be sold to a Chinese club this window for a big big fee.

Can't wait for John Achterberg to completely ruin any discernible talent that he has.

It is a bit too coincidental that since he started coaching them in 2011 that we've had a problem. Both mongolet and karius came in with great records at their previous clubs but look absolute dogshit for us.

Acturburg will have him utter shit within a season.

I actually think Achterberg gets an unfair rep here. Mignolet's problem is not that he is badly coached – actually you can see that many of the problems of his first few years in Liverpool have been gradually ironed out; he's mostly OK with his feet now, comes out for crosses when he's supposed to etc. He's just not at the level of talent of De Gea and Courtois and no amount of coaching will change that.

So why did we buy him ?

The criticism aimed at Achterberg isn't based just on Mignolet's difficulties though. During Achterberg's time at the club we've had a whole string of keepers whose performance ceiling has turned out to be lower than anticipated. This may not be all Achterberg's fault, but he does at the very least have a case to answer.

I don’t think any of the keepers we’ve had at the club since Reina have been top-level talents, do you? So the recruitment is probably to blame, not coaching.

As for Mignolet, I think Achterberg can actually take credit for the way he helped him change his game from a typical small-club instinctive shot-stopper to a big-club goalkeeper, capable of playing as sweeper (despite initially being horrible with his footwork) and mostly overcoming his fear of coming for crosses. I have no problem with Mignolet’s playing style at the moment; it’s just that the ceiling of his talent has become obvious.

Reina’s performance level declined the moment Achterberg came in. Which is when people started wondering if it was a coincidence. Except Rosco. He said Reina was finished because of his natural physique. Not done too badly since leaving LFC though.

Pepe waxed lyrical about the coach he had at Anfield before Achterberg came in. I think he also worked with him at national level too. I don't recall Pepe having anything to say about Achterberg, good or bad. Did Pepe's "decline" coincide with the arrival of Achterberg?

Yep. Almost exactly in fact.

The coach he previously worked with was his own coach I believe though, appointed by reina himself, so his reaction to having to use Achterberg was seen as biased at the time.
